Chapter 22: The Moon Tonight

The moon was exceptionally bright tonight.

It was ironic. The human world was getting worse by the day, but the scenery of nature was becoming more and more beautiful. There was no smog, no sewage, and no exhaust fumes. Every day was filled with blue skies, white clouds, bright moons, and shining stars.

Bai Youwei closed her eyes and opened them again. She opened them again and closed them again. The scenes from today surfaced in her mind, making it impossible for her to fall asleep.

"Aren't you sleeping?" she asked Shen Mo softly.

"I'll sleep after you fall asleep," Shen Mo said lightly.

He wasn't sleepy yet. Besides, it was awkward for the two of them to lie side by side. After all, they had only met for the first time today.

Bai Youwei said, "It'll be too late if I wait until I fall asleep."

Shen Mo didn't mind. "During training, I only sleep four hours a day. That's enough."

Bai Youwei thought about it and had to admit that the man was indeed physically strong. He had carried her three rounds in the game and only sweated a little. He didn't even pant.

She closed her eyes again, but she still couldn't sleep. After lying down for a while, she propped herself up on her arms and said, "I'll look at the map with you."

Shen Mo divided the map in half.

Suddenly, a soft warmth pressed against his right arm. He paused.

"How do I look at this?" Bai Youwei asked, craning her neck.

Her lower limbs were weak. When she sat, she needed to lean against something. It was difficult for her to sit up straight.

Shen Mo's slightly tensed arm quickly relaxed. He pointed with his finger and taught her how to read the map.

Ever since mobile phone satellite maps became popular, few people looked at paper maps. Usually, they only bought one when they were traveling as a souvenir.

"This is the Hushan Expressway. We are now roughly at this address… From this location onwards, there are puppets in the second half of the journey, so we need to change to the Hurong Expressway tomorrow. Those who went out to scout the way today will lead the team. We will detour from Zhenjiang to Yangzhou…"

Bai Youwei looked at the dense paths and the place names that were the size of mosquitoes. She started to feel a little dizzy.

She forced herself to listen for a while, but her attention drifted away.

Her gaze unconsciously shifted to the man's fingers.

Shen Mo had a pair of very beautiful hands.

His fingers were slender and his joints were well-defined. From his strong forearms to the tips of his fingers, the lines were smooth and powerful. Every meridian that faintly bulged was filled with strength. It was the type that she envied the most.

Her gaze traveled up his hand, and she saw his collarbone, his Adam's apple… His black fringe cast a hazy shadow between his eyebrows and eyes. Only the bridge of his nose was high and clear. He softly recited the names of unfamiliar places. His deep voice reminded Bai Youwei of the cello that her father had collected.

Now, the 'cello' looked over and asked in a low voice, "What's wrong?"

"I'm sleepy." She lay down, picked up the fluffy rabbit as a pillow, and went to sleep.

Shen Mo: "…"

After a moment of silence, he put away the map and asked, "Are you cold?"

Bai Youwei didn't respond, as if she had already fallen asleep.

Shen Mo looked at her quietly. After a while, he got up and walked out.

After he left, Bai Youwei opened her eyes.

Her eyes were as calm as water.

It was the middle of the night, and they were a man and a woman alone together. It was not a big deal, but it was inevitable for people to overthink things. If she thought too much, her heart would be in turmoil. If her heart was in turmoil, things would often get out of hand.

Bai Youwei had also dreamed of a hero saving a princess when she was young, but that was before her legs were paralyzed.

After she became paralyzed, how to live with dignity became the most important thing in her life. It was much more important than love.

Moreover, this could not be considered love at all. It was just a coincidence that she had encountered danger, a coincidence that there was a man beside her, and a coincidence that he treated her quite well.

She heard that men and women who had experienced life and death together were prone to developing feelings for each other. She didn't know if it was true or not, but it didn't matter. Anyway… once they reached Yangzhou, everything would be over.

She closed her eyes and forced herself to fall asleep as soon as possible.

Footsteps came from the door. They were slow and messy. It was more than one person.

Bai Youwei turned her head and saw three ruffian-looking young men walking towards her.

They were the ones who had gone out to scout the way.
