Chapter 17: Information Exchange

The middle-aged couple didn't take Bai Youwei's words seriously, thinking she was just a naive young lady. They turned to Shen Mo and said, "We're having a meeting in the restaurant later. Do you want to join us?"

Shen Mo glanced down at Bai Youwei and casually asked, "What kind of meeting?"

"Just gathering together to discuss what to do." The man explained amicably, "Many hands make light work. It's better to brainstorm together than to worry alone. It's okay if you don't want to come, we won't force you."

Shen Mo nodded and replied politely, "Okay, we'll be there later."

Satisfied with their answer, the middle-aged couple left without another word.

"Why stay? You want to get information out of them?" Bai Youwei sneered, her expression full of disdain. "The supermarket is empty, they've definitely been hiding here eating and drinking for more than a day or two, too afraid to take any risks. What can you expect them to know?"

Shen Mo opened the car door, bent down and carried Bai Youwei inside. Then he took out bread and water for her.

"Since the highway is blocked, we have to take a detour to Yangzhou. It might get dark before we get there. It's dangerous to drive at night because we can't see the road clearly and it's hard to avoid the dolls in time. Why don't we stay and see what they have to say?"

Bai Youwei frowned at his words, noncommittal.

She had no good feelings for these people in the service area, but in this situation, no decision seemed safe.

Bai Youwei took a small bite of the bread, chewed it, and then asked Shen Mo, "Do you think any of them have passed the game?"

Shen Mo was opening the trunk, searching for something useful. He looked up at her. "What do you think?"

"I think there is." Bai Youwei said, "The couple just now looked honest and simple, not the type to meddle, but they took the initiative to wait for us here. At first glance, they seem warm-hearted, but I feel like they were sent over."

Shen Mo's hand paused, a little surprised.

He had also noticed this, but he hadn't expected Bai Youwei to see through it as well.

"Your observation skills are good." He pulled a military blanket from the trunk and draped it over Bai Youwei's legs. "There should be a leader among these people. He needs to gather information, so he has to keep in contact with newcomers passing by. As for why he didn't come out in person, it's easy to understand. Sending a kind-looking couple is more likely to gain trust."

Bai Youwei looked at him suspiciously. "You know there's something fishy, yet you still want to attend that meeting?"

Shen Mo smiled. "Something fishy doesn't mean malicious. He needs information, and so do we."

From the "Tortoise and Hare" game, they discovered that not everyone would turn into a doll. As long as they passed the game, they could survive. But why didn't anyone in the city know? There wasn't even a single bit of related news.

Think about it, after they passed the game, they immediately realized that the network signal was cut off. So did that mean… other people who won the game all went to places without signal, so they couldn't send out information accurately?

If that's the case, this global disaster is even more terrifying than imagined…

Later, night fell, and the only light in the entire service area came from the restaurant.

Shen Mo pushed Bai Youwei into the restaurant.

The people inside were sitting together. Hearing the sound, they turned their heads to look. Seeing Shen Mo and Bai Youwei, they looked away indifferently.

The cold white light streamed down from the ceiling, casting deep shadows on their faces, contrasting with their similar numb expressions, making the scene look inexplicably horrifying.

"Newcomers?" A man with glasses looked up, his tone flat. "If you want to participate in the meeting, you need to exchange information first."
