Chapter 138: Post-Apocalyptic Extra 2 - Past Life

Lin Baobao thrust the Tang blade into the ground, the hardened edge splitting the earth.

Looking at the desolate land, the blood had long since dried, yet it still brought tears streaming down her face, uncontrollable.

She could imagine how painful, how agonizing, and how unwilling Lou Ling must have been when the zombies tore at her body and devoured her flesh and blood. She hated everyone who had hurt her, and hated herself even more for leaving. If she hadn't left, Lou Ling wouldn't have been misled, tricked out of the base, and wouldn't have died.

"Wuwuwu…"

Her whimpers eventually turned into choked sobs. The most important sunshine in her life had been extinguished, gone from this world, never to be seen again.

She hated everyone who had hurt her, hated Lou Dian even more, but hated herself the most.

As her head swam with grief, a sudden, immense force sent her flying. She only had time to grip her Tang blade, which screeched against the ground as she crashed heavily. While her mind was still consumed by sorrow, her well-trained body reacted instinctively. She swung the blade forward, a water dragon roaring out and coiling around the limbs of the attacking zombie. The reinforced Tang blade then cleanly decapitated the creature.

Her face, hardened by the apocalypse, held a grim expression. A gruesome scar ran across her cute, doll-like face from left cheek to right. It was easy to imagine how close to death that injury had brought her, and the harsh lesson it had taught her, paid for with her appearance. But in the apocalypse, who cared about such superficial things? Only survival and strength mattered.

A white figure appeared ahead. Bathed in sunlight, the man in white was almost blinding. Yet, as the sunlight shifted, it revealed eyes filled with cold madness and ferocity. The wind stirred his slightly long hair, revealing his handsome face.

"Such a stupid woman!" The man looked down at Lin Baobao, her eyes red from crying, with disdain. Deep within his eyes, however, something more complex flickered.

Lin Baobao sneered, "My stupidity is my own business. Even if I don't want to live now, it's still my own business." With that, she sheathed her Tang blade and turned to leave.

The wind rushed silently from behind. Lin Baobao spun around, her Tang blade held in reverse grip, its tip pressed against the man's chest. "Get lost!" she hissed. "I don't want to see you."

The man paused, then used his fingers to push the blade away, ignoring the blood welling up. A cruel smile spread across his face. "Stupid woman, what good is crying? Don't you want revenge for her? She shouldn't have died. It's all because she cared too much for Lou Dian. That man was nearly driven mad by her death, leaving himself vulnerable, ripe for manipulation." He leaned closer, his breath hot on her face. "Even if she hadn't died this time, as long as she loved Feng Shaohuang, Lou Dian would have gone insane and dragged all three of them to hell."

"Shut up!" Her face twisted in anger. "Lingling would never love that spineless man…"

"Who says she didn't? She just kept it hidden because of Lou Dian. You probably don't know, but your yielding was pointless. Lou Ling only saw that man as a brother. She loved men like Feng Shaohuang, free as the wind. If it weren't for Lou Dian, they could have been together. Feng Shaohuang might be a bit irresponsible now, but he's growing up for her, learning responsibility and tolerance. Such a beautiful love…"

Unable to bear it any longer, she hurled a ball of water at him. She thought he would dodge, but he simply stood there, soaked to the bone. His white clothes clung to him, dripping.

She thought this man was insane. In this day and age, he still wore all white. Ominous. But she'd heard he had once been held in a mysterious research institute. After he escaped, killing the researchers and zombies within, he began habitually wearing white, as if trying to hide something.

"Will you help me get revenge?" she asked suddenly.

"Of course," he replied, his bloodthirsty eyes fixed on her with unconcealed hunger. "Depends on what you're willing to give."

She gave him a look of disgust, then closed her eyes and allowed him to embrace her.

"Tan Mo, you must do it, or I will kill you…" she whispered.

Tan Mo fiercely bit her lip, lifted her onto his shoulder, and carried her away. He ravaged her body, like a wild beast marking its territory, branding her with his scent.

"Lou Dian is dead. He planned it for six months, and everyone died, torn apart alive by zombies."

Lin Baobao was cleaning her Tang blade. Hearing this, she abruptly looked up.

Tan Mo sat by the fire, roasting a piece of mutant beast meat. The firelight made his eyes gleam with a blood-red, demonic light. "I checked the scene. The explosion was too powerful; there wasn't much left. They say Dr. Feng from the research institute was there too. He's dead as well."

Lin Baobao sneered. Good riddance. Scum like him deserved to die. As she thought this, she glanced over and saw a strange smile on his face. She quickly understood. He had clearly used Lou Dian to do his dirty work. Lou Dian's actions had saved him the trouble. Having been held in that mysterious research institute and turned into this monstrous form, no one hated them more than he did. Although it had restored his memories, freeing him from his previous state of near-idiocy, it had also turned him into a monster.

Hearing that all her enemies were dead, she felt a sudden emptiness.

Lou Ling was dead, Lou Dian was dead, everyone she knew was dead. Why was she the only one left alive in this disgusting world?

In a daze, she felt herself flung high into the air. The Zombie King's black claws pierced her heart. She knew she was dying. It was fine. She missed Lou Ling, missed the girl who had smiled at her with a radiance like the sun that early autumn day during their freshman year. Lou Ling had been her spiritual anchor, her faith, her reason for living in this world.

"Lin… Sister!"

Strong arms caught her. Her vision blurred, but she saw the Zombie King, who had been giving the human ability users such a hard time, torn to shreds. The zombies and mutant beasts summoned by the Zombie King seemed to hesitate, afraid to approach them.

She understood now. Tan Mo's body had been modified by the research institute. They had supposedly been trying to create the ultimate weapon. Tan Mo had escaped, and no one knew if the modifications had been successful. But now it seemed the transformation had been perfectly, terrifyingly successful. A monster, neither human nor zombie, reviled by humans and feared by zombies. He truly had become the ultimate weapon, without weakness.

Tan Mo looked down. His cold lips gently brushed the ugly scar on her face, his voice choked with emotion. "Can I call you sister? Please don't die. Can we stay together forever…?"

No. She didn't want to live in this ugly world. No one cared about her.

"If you die, I will destroy humanity! I will let the zombies rule this world."

Go ahead. What did she care about the lives of others? It would be better if humanity died. Then they wouldn't do so many disgusting things.

"…Ah, you probably don't know, but when Mom brought you home, I liked you right away. You were like a doll. But why were you so stubborn? I didn't call you sister because I didn't want you to be my sister. I wanted to love you, like a man loves a woman… Haha, now I'm not even human anymore, so you hate me, you won't accept me, right…?"

That's not it! It's because I never knew that your gloomy demeanor meant you liked me? How ridiculous! If you liked me, why did you always look at me like some young master, thinking I was superfluous, disrupting your happy family? It's too late to say these things now…

At the end of her life, she used her last bit of strength to look at him closely, then died in his arms with a peaceful smile on her face.
