Chapter 66: Happenings in the Apocalypse 4

The day passed quickly, and soon night fell.

The group found three rooms upstairs. They locked the main door, and Lou Ling grew an iron vine in the corner to keep watch. Then, they went upstairs to their rooms.

It was a given that Lou Ling and Lou Dian would share a room. As for Lin Bao Bao – she kicked the man who followed her into the room out with one foot. Of course, compared to Lou Dian, her strength was lacking. After being kicked, Tan Mo was still able to stand properly. It didn’t hurt him at all. He just looked at her with a wronged and confused expression.

Lin Bao Bao crossed her arms and stood by the door. She told him, “Your room is over there.”

Tan Mo continued to stare at her blankly, then at the next room, then back at her with an innocent look.

In the end, Lin Bao Bao could only frown and let him into the room. She decided to humor him and not let him provoke Lou Dian again, otherwise, he would really be played to death by Lou Dian. All afternoon, he had tried to attack Lou Dian dozens of times. He was finally beaten up, his handsome face bruised and swollen. Some were from hitting the wall, and some were from being stepped on and beaten by Lou Dian. It was simply too horrible to look at.

Lin Bao Bao condensed a ball of water in the washbasin. From the corner of her eye, she noticed that he was acting like a foolish predator again, wanting to reach out and scatter her water ball. However, under her warning, he could only bare his teeth and glare at her threateningly. After filling the basin with water, Lin Bao Bao used the clean water to help him clean the wounds on his face and found him a set of men’s pajamas to change into.

After doing all this, Lin Bao Bao lay down on the only bed in the room. It was summer, and the night wasn’t much cooler. She didn’t even need a blanket. She just put her backpack under her head and placed the Tang knife within reach. After lying down, Lin Bao Bao saw Tan Mo squatting on the windowsill like a feline. His figure was hidden in the darkness, almost blending in with it.

Lin Bao Bao wondered if Tan Mo’s body had been modified by those crazy researchers at the institute, or if some animal genes had been added, so he would unconsciously reveal some animalistic habits, whether it was resting, eating, or sleeping. Of course, this was just speculation and there was no basis for it at present.

What she didn’t understand was why Tan Mo, having become like this, could still recognize her and even call her “Sister”? She didn’t think her relationship with Tan Mo was that good. They were all just maintaining superficial peace and courtesy for their mother’s sake. Apart from the summer holidays every year, they didn’t usually see each other.

Seeing Tan Mo quietly curled up on the windowsill and falling asleep, Lin Bao Bao pursed her lips, pressed her arm against her eyes, and forced herself to sleep.

The other room, however, was not so peaceful.

Lou Ling kicked the man on top of her and whispered, “Stop messing around, Bao Bao and the others are next door! Didn’t you say you were going to take Tan Mo to the mountains for training tomorrow? Go to sleep.”

“The night is still young, and there is plenty of time to rest. Don’t worry, Xiao Ling, I won’t get tired.”

Lou Dian’s voice was extremely gentle as he slowly did what he liked, teasing her at a pace that would drive anyone crazy.

You won’t get tired, but I will! I’m exhausted!

Lou Ling’s eyes were filled with a physiological mist. She bit her lip tightly, afraid that she would make a sound and let the people next door hear. An esper’s five senses were much better than an ordinary person’s, and she didn’t know how good the sound insulation in this room was. While she was lost in her thoughts, she heard Lou Dian’s voice again, filled with amusement. An ambiguous breath brushed past her ear, and she felt her ears burning.

“Don’t worry, I’ve blocked the surroundings with my mental energy. Even if you shouted at the top of your lungs, no one would hear you.”

Damn it! What kind of perverted thing is mental energy? It’s specially designed for perverts, right?

This was the first intimate contact since they accepted the mission at the research institute base. Maybe it was because they had been holding back for too long, but he was a little rough. In the end, Lou Ling felt that her legs were about to go numb. She angrily bit him a few times before he reluctantly stopped, his face still carrying a trace of unsatisfied regret.

“Alright, go to sleep if you’re tired, Xiao Ling. I won’t bother you anymore.” Lou Dian cleaned her up, turned off the light, got into bed, and pulled her into his arms, kissing her face.

Lou Ling turned her face away and mumbled, “Next time…”

“Hmm?” He listened intently, his gaze focused.

In the darkness, she could only vaguely see his outline, but her mind automatically painted a picture of his eyes. She was a little embarrassed, and said, “When we get to a safe place, I will definitely…” She moved closer to his ear and whispered the rest of her words.

“Okay.” He chuckled in response, gently holding her, leaving a heart-fluttering kiss on her lips. He patted her back lightly and let her fall asleep.

A summer night after the apocalypse was no different from a summer night before the apocalypse. The summer insects still chirped non-stop in the grass. The only difference was that in the darkness, mutated beasts were approaching, their steps silent as they stealthily crept towards the house.

The person curled up on the windowsill opened his eyes. The originally dark brown eyes, characteristic of East Asians, flashed with a hint of amber light. A tyrannical aura emanated from him, scaring the mutated beast in the darkness into turning and fleeing.

This tyrannical aura also awakened the others in the house, especially Lin Bao Bao. Being the closest, she was also affected. The moment she abruptly opened her eyes, her hand subconsciously grabbed the Tang knife and she flipped over to get up.

The surroundings were deathly silent, so quiet that it was terrifying. Even the summer insects had stopped chirping.

“Sister…”

Hearing this voice, Lin Bao Bao’s sharp eyes softened. She turned on the flashlight and saw that there was no one on the windowsill. The figure was squatting in front of the bed, looking at her with a confused expression. The no longer childish man seemed to be wondering why she had suddenly gotten up.

Lin Bao Bao breathed a sigh of relief and asked, “What happened just now?”

Tan Mo tilted his head and thought for a moment before answering, “Food, I’ll go catch…”

“Wait!” Lin Bao Bao quickly pressed down on his shoulder and said, “It’s too late now. Let’s catch it tomorrow.” She couldn’t help but feel a headache, and she also doubted in her heart, did she really have the ability to restrain him? Was her initial thought ridiculous?

Although she had a headache, since she had chosen to do this, she would not turn back even if she died.

On the other side, Lou Ling was also startled awake. After the apocalypse, even if she was sleeping soundly in a safe place, she still retained her vigilance. A slight gust of wind or rustling sound was enough to wake her up.

“Brother, what’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing, go back to sleep.” Lou Dian pulled her back into his arms and gently patted her back. He said, “A few mutated beasts came here earlier, but they were scared away by Tan Mo.”

“Oh.” Lou Ling yawned, still a little dazed. She asked, “His aura is very scary, different from other espers.”

“Yes, it should be the work of those people from the research institute. Dr. Fang’s diary didn’t mention him, so he was probably a test subject of another doctor. Maybe they injected animal genes into his body, or maybe some mutation happened, giving him a deterrent effect on mutated beasts.” Lou Dian pondered, “And his mental energy, his brain domain should have been altered as well. He can block the senses of zombies and the mental energy of espers.”

Lou Ling was a little more awake now. She said excitedly, “Does this mean that when Tan Mo becomes powerful, he can shield the entire city? Then we won’t have to be afraid of zombie sieges.”

Lou Dian laughed, “That’s a good idea, but to reach that level, it will take a long time.” Even seven years after the apocalypse, Tan Mo wouldn’t be able to achieve that level. At most, he could shield a ten-mile radius. Of course, that was already very powerful. Countless bases and esper teams wanted to recruit him. Whether it was to keep him at the base or to take him on missions, it would be extremely beneficial. The premise was that they could control this powerful esper who was as untamed as a wild beast.

Lou Ling was not discouraged. Her voice was full of cheer, “That’s only natural. You can’t expect him to become invincible all of a sudden. It’s a process. Just like how zombies are evolving, plants and animals are evolving, and humans are evolving too. Everyone is on equal footing. No matter how powerful something is, nature will always give birth to something that can counter it.”

“You’re right.” Lou Dian said with a smile. He loved to chat casually with her. Listening to her cheerful voice, even if he was in the most difficult situation, he wouldn’t feel despair or numbness.

The next day, after a simple breakfast, they packed up and set off for the woods near the village.

The woods were not deep, the mountains were not high, the vegetation was sparse, and there were few mutated plants, let alone mutated beasts.

They had no choice but to cross the mountain and go deeper, aiming to find mutated beasts to train Tan Mo, while also bringing the two girls along.

By noon, the sun was scorching. The four of them rested under the shade of a tree and prepared to have lunch.

Just as Lou Dian took out the tools from his space to prepare a simple lunch, Tan Mo suddenly bent down and rushed out. He quickly returned with a mutated rabbit. The mutated rabbit was already dead. Its legs twitched a few times before going still. Everyone looked over and saw that there were still traces of bright red blood on Tan Mo’s mouth.

Tan Mo brutally twisted the head off the mutated rabbit, then twisted off a leg and handed it to Lin Bao Bao. He said, “Sister, eat…”

Lin Bao Bao: “…” She didn’t want to eat, she wanted to vomit!

After a while, Lin Bao Bao finally exploded. She punched him on the head and roared, “No more eating raw food, change this habit right now!!” Then she snatched the dismembered mutated rabbit, glared at the confused Tan Mo, and made him stay there obediently. She decided to make the mutated rabbit into delicious roasted meat to guide Tan Mo into the habit of eating cooked food.

Lin Bao Bao took out a Swiss Army knife from her backpack, skillfully skinned the mutated rabbit, removed the internal organs, rinsed it clean with water, and then skewered it on a branch she had cut. She placed it on the rack Lou Ling had made and started a fire to roast it.

The four of them had roasted meat with rice balls for lunch.

“Take it slow, he’ll get there eventually.” Lou Ling comforted her and told Lin Bao Bao not to be so impatient.

Lin Bao Bao sighed. It seemed that this was the only way. She saw Tan Mo squatting at the side, his eyes fixed on the rabbit roasting on the rack, which was already emitting a fragrant aroma. She picked up the almost cooked mutated rabbit and moved it to the left. His head turned to follow it. She moved it to the right, and his head turned to the right again. After doing this a few times, she was satisfied and put it back on the rack, continuing to brush the sauce on it.

The former pampered young master of the Tan family had become like this today. If he were to wake up and return to normal, would he be so ashamed that he would want to die, and then hate her so much that he would want to kill her?
