Chapter 125: Apocalyptic Ending 11

A piercing siren wailed over the base. People, many in ragged clothing, rushed about with panicked expressions, their anxious gazes fixed on the high walls surrounding them. Despair and hope intertwined in their eyes – despair at the zombie siege, hope in the protection of the powerful Espers.

This was the sorrow of the powerless.

A dozen figures stood on the high platform of the towering wall.

All the noteworthy Espers in the base were present, observing the situation outside. As far as the eye could see, a black line surged towards the base like a tide. From afar, it resembled a dense swarm of ants. But the stench of decay in the air told them that the approaching black line was not ants, but zombies.

Lou Ling, holding a silver-gray wooden staff, stood on the platform, gazing down for a long while. She couldn't help but glance back at the bustling base behind her. Although the people in the base were hurrying, their eyes filled with deep worry and despair, they hadn't lost their reason. There was order amidst the chaos. They were busy with their tasks, organizing logistics. Doctors, healers, medicine, food, water – everything was being carried to a nearby location, ready for use.

This demonstrated Lei Hongming's management skills. Before the battle even began, he had arranged everything meticulously, leaving no room for worry.

As she was thinking, Lei Hongming, having finished his arrangements, arrived and ascended the platform.

“General Lei!”

Upon his arrival, both ordinary people and Espers called out, their voices filled with excitement, respect, and trust. Lei Hongming truly deserved the respect and trust of everyone in the base. This was his charisma, a charm he had proven through his actions.

Lei Hongming nodded to the crowd and walked to Lou Dian, who was standing in a corner. “What have you found?” he asked.

The previously inconspicuous corner became the focus of everyone's attention because of Lei Hongming's arrival and his evident trust in the man standing there. The man in black, previously hidden in the crowd, was now in the spotlight. But the sight of such a handsome and refined young man, as cultured and clean as a nobleman meticulously raised by a prestigious family, evoked a strange feeling in everyone's hearts.

Only a few hours had passed since Lou Dian and the others entered the base. The incident with Liu Bingsheng, the leader of the base's top Esper team – the Tianbiao Esper Team – being crippled, and Liu Tianquan's subsequent submission, hadn't spread widely due to the sudden zombie tide. Except for Jiang Qi, Ge Daguang, and a few others, no one knew about Lou Dian's deeds. Naturally, they didn't understand why Lei Hongming would consult an unknown man. However, seeing Liu Tianquan, Jiang Qi, and Ge Daguang remain silent, the others wisely kept their mouths shut, only observing him with scrutinizing eyes.

“Have them prepare,” Lou Dian said with a slight smile. “I'm afraid this will be a tough battle.”

Upon hearing this, the crowd dismissed his words inwardly. The base had experienced several zombie tides last year, each a hard-fought battle, but they had survived.

Lou Dian naturally noticed the Espers' skepticism, but he only smiled faintly, offering no explanation.

However, Lei Hongming understood the underlying meaning of his words. He had interacted with Lou Dian, and with Lou Dian's strength, if even he said "tough battle," then it must be more terrifying than any previous zombie siege.

With that thought, he took a deep breath, raised his hand, and began issuing commands.

Lei Hongming was indeed a charismatic leader. His presence calmed the initially panicked crowd.

In a matter of moments, the zombies came into full view.

When they saw the approaching horde, everyone gasped, realizing that the number of zombies this time was greater than ever before. It would indeed be a tough battle. But that wasn't the most terrifying thing. When they heard the flapping of wings from the sky, they finally realized the true horror of this zombie tide.

Zombies, mutated zombie beasts, and zombie birds – all were mobilized.

Various mutated zombie beasts advanced among the zombie horde, while zombie birds filled the sky, occupying it with absolute dominance, eyeing the base below menacingly. They only stopped a few kilometers from the base, halting their advance in an orderly fashion, confronting the humans within.

Everyone's bodies went cold, their legs stiffening. This scene suggested an intelligent being leading the zombies in a deadly duel against humanity.

The world fell silent.

The air seemed to solidify. In this frozen atmosphere, only Lou Dian, standing among the crowd, observed the overwhelming zombie siege with the detachment of a bystander. This situation, so similar to his previous life, had ultimately breached the base's defenses. Only a few had escaped; the rest had perished in the zombie tide.

But now, because he possessed absolute power, he could observe this conspiracy as a bystander.

Yes, the zombies' conspiracy!

He thought that if the base hadn't fallen in his previous life, he and Lou Ling would have stayed in the C County base, waiting for a breakthrough opportunity, instead of being forced to flee to the capital base. He wouldn't have met those people, experienced those events… and Lou Ling wouldn't have left him completely!

Feng Shaohuang, you abandoned your chance in the previous life, so this time, the opportunity is mine!

With that thought, he couldn't help but smile. He suddenly reached out and grasped the hand of the woman beside him, who was focused on the scene, drawing a surprised look from her. Under his smile, she returned a radiant one, dispelling the cold of spring, leaving only a heartwarming warmth.

“Stop messing around!” Lou Ling thought he was having another episode and patted his hand in comfort, her gaze fixed on the zombie tide, watching for any unexpected incidents. In this serious moment, a cloud of worry seemed to weigh heavily on everyone's hearts. However, his sudden small gesture unexpectedly made her relax, easing her tense nerves.

Just as she breathed a sigh of relief, the zombies moved, launching their attack.

On land and in the sky, zombies and zombie birds swarmed, turning the entire world into a battlefield.

“All Esper psychics, cast the net!”

Lei Hongming waved his hand. A dozen Esper psychics, using their psychic powers as a medium, shielded the sky, mitigating the attacks of the zombie birds. This was an extremely difficult task. The zombie birds in the sky were of a higher level than the Esper psychics. Blocking them was not easy, and they not only had to block them but also ensure that the zombie birds didn't break through and attack the Espers fighting on the walls.

The Espers on the wall and the platform also sprang into action, wielding their weapons, knocking down the zombies climbing the wall, crushing their heads.

Wave after wave of zombies surged forward like a tide. They had no senses, no pain, no fear, only relentless forward momentum. Inside and outside the walls, the bodies of zombies and humans began to pile up, blood flowing like rivers.

Lou Ling waved her hand, scattering several mutated vine seeds. They sprouted instantly, and iron vines and ivy lunged at the zombies jumping onto the wall, their tendrils wrapping around the zombies' legs, dragging them down.

A young man, who nearly had his head clawed by a zombie, was suddenly yanked to the side by a vine. Though dizzy from the impact, he immediately noticed the small zombie in his previous spot. It had been a child before mutating, but its body was incredibly agile and fast.

The young man knew that the mutated vine had saved him and cast a grateful look at Lou Ling.

A figure rushed over. Ge Daguang chopped off the small zombie's head and finally reached the young man, slapping the back of his head. His voice, hoarse from battle, was filled with exasperation: “Who the hell told you to come here? You damn brat, get back inside!”

The young man's face was covered in sweat and dust. He grinned and said, “Uncle, don't be mad! I need to watch you, in case something happens!”

Ge Daguang grabbed him by the collar, threw him down the wall, and continued to fight the attacking zombies.

The young man was about to climb back up when he noticed something in the sky out of the corner of his eye and shouted, “Oh no! Zombie birds have broken through on the west side!”

Lei Hongming, as the base's fourth-tier Esper and a high-ranking one at that, had joined the battle. His second-in-command, Lei Xianyun, was now in charge. Hearing the young man's shout, he immediately dispatched personnel to the west side to block the zombie birds, roaring for people to deliver energy cores to the Esper psychics so they could replenish their power.

The dozen Esper psychics were nearing exhaustion. Their psychic energy was depleted, and they were only holding on through sheer willpower. The rate at which they absorbed energy cores couldn't keep up with the rate at which they expended their power, causing their energy to drain rapidly without adequate replenishment. The situation was precarious. If the sky fell, allowing the zombie birds to invade, the base would collapse from within, and the consequences would be dire.

Just as despair set in, everyone suddenly felt a surge of immense psychic power envelop them, annihilating the zombie birds that had torn through the psychic net and flown in. Rotting flesh and blood rained down from the sky.

This immense psychic power was so terrifying that even those in the midst of battle were startled. Everyone's gaze followed the psychic net that enveloped the base to the man standing on the platform. The spring breeze rustled their clothes, revealing the man's handsome face.

He stood there, relaxed and composed, immense psychic power emanating from him. His absolute dominance made it seem as if he were the only one in the world, effortlessly striking down and annihilating the attacking enemies in the sky. It was an overwhelming massacre, both awe-inspiring and captivating.

Everyone's eyes were filled with surprise, ecstasy, and speculation. Such immense psychic power made it impossible to guess his level.

Among the crowd, Liu Tianquan, whose hands still bore faint scars, felt a surge of fear. He finally understood that back at the Tianbiao Esper Team building, the man hadn't used his full strength. He didn't want to recall that absolute suppression of power, and he even began to regret provoking such a demonic man.

Amidst the joyous gazes of the humans, a pair of scarlet eyes within the zombie horde outside the base pierced through the mass of zombies, staring directly at the man on the platform, filled with killing intent.

Lou Dian seemed to sense something. With millions of zombies densely packed, it was difficult to pinpoint the target. Zombies that had developed intelligence were as cunning as humans. As long as it hid within the horde and commanded, no one could find its trace unless all the zombies were eliminated. This was a massive and time-consuming undertaking, and humanity didn't have that much time to waste on these evil undead creatures.

Some died, their bodies instantly turning into zombies, their heads numbly chopped off by their companions. Some were injured, carried back to the rear, and fed antidotes, but lost their fighting ability. Some exhausted their Esper abilities, relying only on willpower until they were killed by zombies. Some were so tired they could no longer stand and fell from the wall…

“Liu Tianquan!”

Amidst the cacophony of battle, this gentle and clear voice pierced through everyone's eardrums, causing Liu Tianquan, who had been mechanically killing zombies, to tremble, his eyes filled with despair.
