Chapter 221: This Zombie Is under My Protection! 13

Su Tang was exasperated by Shen Yi's sudden mood swings. "Let's talk about what we were discussing before. Mr. Shen, have you been feeling any different lately?" Su Tang swallowed the urge to curse, forcing a gentle smile.

Shen Yi looked at her, her cool eyes focused entirely on him. His chaotic mind suddenly cleared. It wasn't that he felt different, per se. He paid attention to her, cared about her, not because she was the researcher from the institute, but because she was Lin Yang.

He wanted her to care about him, wanted those cool eyes to be colored with other emotions, wanted her to have no one else by her side but him.

He wanted… to have her.

Su Tang shivered under that obscure gaze, feeling like prey being stalked. She abruptly stood up, but before she could take a step, she was pushed back down.

"Where do you think you're going?"

The sudden burst of hostility was suffocating.

This constant back-and-forth was wearing her down. Resigned, she slumped back into the chair. "I'm going to get some water!"

Shen Yi also realized he had overreacted. "Eat your noodles. I'll get you water." He turned and went to get hot water.

The noodles were a little soggy, but Su Tang genuinely didn't mind. A moment later, a cup of hot water was placed beside her.

She picked up the cup and opened her mouth to speak, only to hear him gruffly say, "Don't thank me!"

Su Tang swallowed her words, thinking this zombie's heart was truly harder to read than a human's.

The portion of noodles was small, cooked just to her liking. Honestly, besides his temper and gruffness, Shen Yi treated her quite well. He prepared three meals a day with variety, knew she couldn't eat cold food, and even when she wanted water in the middle of the night, he would have it warmed and ready for her.

Thinking of this, she sighed. Forget it, why should she argue with a zombie?

"Mr. Shen, do we have any extra food at home?"

Hearing the words "our home," Shen Yi's mood inexplicably brightened. "Why are you asking?" Then, realizing his tone was harsh, he added, "You won't go hungry, anyway."

Su Tang replied, "I'm going to see a child, the one I operated on a while ago. I heard he's recovering well, so I want to visit him."

The corners of Shen Yi's lips, which had just turned up, immediately flattened. When he was in the lab, why didn't she come visit him more often?

"We don't have any."

His harsh tone gave Su Tang a headache. "Why are you angry again?"

Shen Yi would never admit it. "Why would I be angry? I don't need to eat. If you give food away, it's not like I'll be the one starving."

Su Tang rubbed her temples and sighed, resigned to coaxing him. "Li Ya told me about that child. His father died in a zombie horde while on a mission to buy medicine. His mother has no abilities and works almost twenty hours a day just to barely feed them. I'm just going to see him and bring some food. I saved his life with surgery; I don't want him to starve to death."

Li Ya had once said Lin Yang was cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Now, Shen Yi truly felt it.

"I remember he's a Level Five ability user."

Su Tang replied, "Yes, a Level Five at such a young age. If he can survive, he has a bright future."

Ability users could improve their abilities, but it required a massive amount of crystal nucleus energy. The higher the level, the more difficult the advancement became. However, the child was less than ten years old and already Level Five. With enough effort and zombie hunting, he might even reach Level Six someday.

Shen Yi said, "I'll find a chance to train him."

Su Tang was surprised, but then he snapped, "What? You're allowed to save people, but I'm not allowed to teach them?"

Su Tang quickly backpedaled. "Of course not! Please don't be angry, Mr. Shen. Have some water."

Shen Yi laughed in exasperation. "Lin Yang, are you doing this on purpose?"

Su Tang froze, suddenly remembering that Shen Yi didn't eat or drink. She gave an awkward laugh. "My apologies, Mr. Shen." After her insincere apology, she suddenly thought of something else. Zombies ate; Shen Yi, in a sense, was also a zombie. So she asked, "Mr. Shen, do you ever feel hungry?"

Shen Yi looked at her coolly. "What are you getting at?"

Su Tang replied, "Just curious." Seeing him purse his lips in silence, she couldn't help but add, "You don't want to talk about it?"

Shen Yi was essentially a zombie. Being a zombie, he naturally craved humans. But he was picky; not just anyone would do. Usually, when hunger arose, he would go out and kill some zombies, absorbing their crystal nuclei to satiate it. But now, he suddenly wanted to drink her blood.

Oblivious to the approaching danger, Su Tang continued to mutter, "That's strange. Maybe I should buy a live chicken one day and we can try it out? Also, if you bite someone, will they turn into a zombie too?" She grew more excited, her eyes shining. "Hey, Mr. Shen, that's kind of cool. Like a vampire in a movie, the highest-ranking kind."

Shen Yi ignored her words and walked past her to take the bowl.

Su Tang was now fully engaged, following him. "Mr. Shen, Shen Yi, Shen…"

Shen Yi stopped, letting her bump into his chest. "Shen what?"

Su Tang took a step back and cleared her throat, stopping her teasing. "Are you really not going to try?"

Shen Yi actually enjoyed her boisterousness, but he couldn't let her know about this, because he couldn't handle her energy; it could lead to trouble.

"Give me a reason."

Su Tang was exasperated. "It's for your own good! It's better to be prepared, so if something happens, we'll know what to do."

Shen Yi quickly washed the bowl. Turning back, he ignored her frustrated expression and carefully selected a few items. The girl was truly delicate and picky; she wouldn't touch anything that wasn't fresh. There were still a few buckets of instant noodles at home. Since she wouldn't eat them, they could be given away.

"Let's go."

It was an abrupt statement. Before Su Tang could react, he turned back. Shen Yi was a ruggedly handsome man, the kind that exuded strength. But now, with the corners of his lips curled up, he looked inexplicably roguish.

"If you don't come, should I carry you?"

Su Tang's face darkened. "Carry my ass!"

This time, she really couldn't take it anymore. This zombie was toxic!

Seeing her curse, Shen Yi raised an eyebrow. "Our Dr. Lin actually curses? How rare."

Su Tang's expression remained flat. "I don't just curse; I also hit people."

Now, Shen Yi was intrigued. "Shall we spar sometime?"

Su Tang ignored him.

Why would she willingly subject herself to that kind of abuse?

The girl, in a huff, walked ahead. Shen Yi didn't overtake her, staying half a step behind. Soon, they reached the child's home.
