Chapter 31: The Filth's Obsession

After the group of students left, the library became quiet again. Under the ethereal moonlight, a figure appeared at the door of the third classroom. It dragged a long chain behind it and slowly moved into the classroom.

In front of the messy desks and chairs in the classroom, there was a small, pitch-black Filth, about the size of a cat.

The black body of the Filth split into four limbs. It grabbed a discarded, crumpled piece of paper from the ground and swallowed it whole.

After eating, its body instantly grew huge, reaching the ceiling, but quickly shrank back to the size of a cat.

It was so fast that it seemed like an illusion.

Bai slowly walked over, dragging the long chain, and squatted behind the Filth. It silently stretched out its pale hand, pinched the Filth from behind, and turned it around.

Long hair and a dress were piled on the ground. Bai looked at the front of the little thing, where the face should be. There were four depressions, probably the positions of the eyes, nose, and mouth, but they were not yet formed.

The Filth had just swallowed the remaining fragments of white paper and was a bit confused.

“Hate, hate.”

“No, no little ghost, little ghost gone, want to, follow.”

“Little, little ghost gone.”

“Hate, gone, eat, follow, want little ghost.”

“Filth?” Bai looked at the little thing with a head, arms, legs, and almost like a human child, except for the unformed facial features, and said softly, “This is the first time I've seen a Filth that looks so much like a human.”

“Little, little ghost!” The Filth became very anxious. It stretched out its hand and swung it fiercely at Bai. Bai subconsciously loosened its hand, and the Filth jumped out of the gap in its hand.

“Quite fierce.” Bai said.

It lowered its hand and slowly stood up, its figure like a ghost, and in the blink of an eye, it reached the door.

It raised its head slightly, searching for the direction of the Filth.

“Ah, found it.” Bai said, walking in one direction. After it left, the classroom behind it suddenly disappeared.

Li Xiao Gui was already exhausted when she got home. She left the cardboard box, took off her shoes, found a sofa, and lay down to sleep.

Shen Chen originally wanted to carry Li Xiao Gui upstairs.

But he saw the Female Ghost, who had just been playing even crazier than Li Xiao Gui, gently holding a blanket and suddenly appearing in front of the sofa.

The Female Ghost spread the blanket over the Little Ghost, wrapped her from head to toe, and then picked her up horizontally.

It was very careful, not daring to hold the blanket too tightly.

Li Xiao Gui seemed to feel something, rubbed her head against the Female Ghost through the quilt, and vaguely shouted, “Mom.”

The voice was like sticky glutinous rice cakes, and it was still separated by the quilt, so the Female Ghost couldn't hear it clearly.

The Female Ghost carefully carried the Little Ghost up the stairs, followed by the worried Young Ghost, Burly Ghost, and Ghost Granny.

They clearly stepped on the ground and wouldn't make a sound when they touched objects, but they were still tiptoeing, not daring to make big movements. They didn't dare to get too close to the Little Ghost, and they were nervous.

But Shen Chen knew that Li Xiao Gui, this girl, slept soundly once she fell asleep and wouldn't wake up easily.

Shen Chen and Ghost Grandpa stood downstairs, watching them.

Ghost Grandpa said to Shen Chen, “Sleep here tonight.”

“Okay, Grandpa.” Shen Chen replied.

It wasn't the first time Shen Chen had stayed overnight at the haunted house. He and Chen Yuanyuan had occasionally stayed overnight at the haunted house a few times. It's just that Chen Yuanyuan never remembered.

Before he became friends with the Little Ghost, he never thought that one day he would be able to stay in a house with ghosts so naturally and peacefully, just like he never thought he would be saved by ghosts, never thought that ghosts could be like this.

After a while, the four ghosts came out of the Little Ghost's room.

After closing the door of the Little Ghost's bedroom, the Female Ghost's spiritual buff seemed to disappear as well. It yawned lazily and drifted towards its own room.

“I'm going to bed.” It said.

The Burly Ghost floated downstairs and lowered its voice comically, saying to Shen Chen, “Shen Chen, just sleep here tonight. You can go to school with the Little Ghost tomorrow.”

“Okay.” Shen Chen replied.

After seeing the Little Ghost's bedroom door close, he also walked towards the guest room.

…...

The moonlight hung faintly on the back of the haunted house, the entire house was pitch black, and Yin energy permeated the air.

The skirt was slightly lifted by the night wind. Bai raised its sharp and pale chin, looked at the haunted house, and chuckled softly:

“So it's this place.”

Bai lowered its eyes and walked inside. It followed the scent of the Filth and floated to the window sill on the second floor.

The human-like Filth was lying on the window sill, its claws imprinted on the glass, and its two unformed eye sockets staring intently inside.

“Little ghost, little ghost!”

“Hate, eat!”

“Like, little ghost!”

“Want, little ghost!”

A human girl was sleeping in the bedroom, the quilt carefully folded under her chin, revealing the girl's youthful and fair face.

“Are you looking for her? Why? Is she…” Bai muttered to itself. At this moment, it saw the Filth lying on the window sill become anxious again. It should be affected by what it had eaten, even though it was trying hard to suppress it.

But in the end, it couldn't help but explode, its body growing several times larger, revealing its bloodthirsty aggression.

“Little ghost!”

As soon as the aggression was revealed, the Filth froze. It stared blankly at itself, startled by itself. It looked at the sleeping Li Xiao Gui, and once again fled in a panic.

As it was escaping, it saw Bai behind it and angrily swiped at it with its claws.

Bai easily pinched it in its hand and said, “You want to scratch me again?”

As soon as it finished speaking, it suddenly lowered its head and saw the thin figure downstairs.

Bai put the Filth behind its back and slowly descended while backing up.

Bai looked at the Young Ghost and smiled, “A Hei.”

It was like a familiar friend.

But the Young Ghost acted much colder and asked, “What are you doing here?”

Bai spoke in a casual tone, like an old friend, “Just taking a walk, I didn't expect to come here. By the way, I came to see your new toy. I've always heard people say that you have a cute little toy, but I haven't seen it yet. Now that I've seen it, it's really cute.”

The Young Ghost looked at it and said, “That's mine.”

“I know, I won't fight with you. When have I ever fought with you? I just didn't expect that after all this time, you would be willing to come out of the haunted house and help humans.”

The Young Ghost didn't react to Bai's words but suddenly asked, “Is it related to you that there has been a sudden increase in garbage from the abyss recently?”

“Some are, some aren't.” Bai replied.

“Only you know the summoning circle of the abyss.”

“At first, maybe only I knew. But then it wasn't necessarily true. After all, hundreds of years have passed, and those are not secrets. Someone will always find them.”

It said slowly, “They want to use the things in the abyss to fulfill their desires, so they find it themselves to summon and sign contracts. What can I do?”

The Young Ghost stared straight at the black shadow in front of it, its face expressionless, obviously not believing its words, “I don't care what you want to do, not in these hundred years.”

Bai and the Young Ghost looked at each other for two seconds, a tense atmosphere between them, as if a war was about to break out. Even the Filth in Bai's hand was so frightened that it didn't dare to move and became well-behaved.

Then Bai narrowed its eyes and laughed, saying softly, “Okay, as you wish.”

Bai smiled and slowly disappeared with the Filth.

Notes

Author's Note:

[The Black Box of the Young Ghost]

I don't care about others, I just want you to be safe and sound for these hundred years.

The deal the haunted house made was to cooperate with the Spirit Exorcists, usually working to catch ghosts, and occasionally getting rid of things that came out of the abyss.

Someone guessed the bracelet of the haunted house, so I'll just say it. The bracelet is to limit the power of the ghosts in the haunted house.

Because the Spirit Exorcists wanted them to fight violence with violence, to fight ghosts with ghosts, but they didn't really trust them.

And the Spirit Exorcists had to teach Li Xiao Gui, protect her, and help her integrate into the human world.
