Chapter 153: Visiting the Grave

That night, the whole family learned that Mr. Kang's family name was Yue. Mr. Kang was so happy that he bought a lot of meat, two bottles of wine, and plum juice for the children.

"What are we celebrating? You bought so much stuff?" Yue Qin was about to go grocery shopping for dinner when he found Mr. Kang had already bought everything.

Not only that, but he also bought balloons and banners.

This was a man who loved a good celebration.

However, today didn't seem to be any special anniversary or holiday.

Mr. Kang said mysteriously, "We're celebrating that we have the same last name!"

Xia Sheng was helping her sister adjust her wig and shouted, "Can someone hand me a hair tie?"

Yue Qin went to get a hair tie, and Mr. Kang followed him and said, "My biological father's last name was Yue, that's why my name is Kang Yue. He probably wanted me to remember our original surname."

"We have the same last name, maybe we were even family 500 years ago, isn't that worth celebrating?"

Xia Ling was letting her sister braid her hair with a look of indifference. She was so hungry that she felt something was wrong with what they were saying, but she couldn't figure out what it was.

So, the whole family sat on the balcony, eating hot pot and drinking rice wine.

At first, they were just eating hot pot normally. Xia Ling filled her stomach and her brain finally started working again.

Looking at the happy faces around her, Xia Ling asked a question, "Isn't he your cousin? Shouldn't his last name be Yue?"

The group who were celebrating turned to look at her.

Xia Ling: "Isn't it?"

They looked at each other, then realized that Xia Ling didn't know anything yet!

This was something they could tell Xia Ling, but they didn't know how to tell her. It was too fantastical, too challenging to human understanding.

"I'll tell her." Xia Sheng was calm and told Xia Ling everything that had happened before with a smile.

Finally, she added, "It's all true. If you don't believe me, you can ask Little Kangkang. He never lies."

Little Kangkang nodded. "My brother came because I wished for him."

Xia Ling didn't say anything, her entire being in a state of seriousness. After a long hesitation, she said, "Am I dreaming right now?"

Mr. Kang couldn't eat anymore. Yue Qin was also waiting for Xia Ling's reaction. The meat in the hot pot was almost overcooked, and Teacher Liu quickly fished it out.

Everyone knew about this except Xia Ling. At first, they didn't know how to tell her, but Xia Ling was family, and they couldn't keep it from her forever.

Mr. Kang took a sip of rice wine. He was a little nervous. He wasn't worried that they wouldn't believe him, but that if they did, they would think he was an outsider freeloading at their house.

After a while, Xia Ling looked up at Mr. Kang, then at Teacher Liu, who was chewing with his cheeks puffed out, and said with a complicated expression, "Really?"

Mr. Kang nodded. "It's true."

"So, this guy who never talks and always eats at our house for free can really read people's minds?"

Teacher Liu, who was burying his head in a chicken leg, looked up innocently and said, "Huh?"

Mr. Kang: "No, that's not the point. The point is me. What do you think about my situation?"

Xia Ling was very confused: "Are you guys serious? Obviously, Teacher Liu's situation is more serious. Such a mystical and mythical person! He actually exists?!"

Xia Ling couldn't help but ask, "So, is there time travel in this world? Are there dragons? How long have you lived?"

Xia Ling initially thought that this silent, seldom-speaking person who freeloaded at their house every day was just someone with thick skin.

She never expected that he would have such an ability.

Teacher Liu finally stopped eating and looked up, explaining, "I'm just an ordinary person, just like you. The only difference is that I can hear people's thoughts."

Mr. Kang added, "If he reveals what's in someone's heart, he'll be struck by lightning. Don't ask me how I know that."

Xia Ling immediately withdrew her previous thoughts.

This was just a small ripple. They ate for over an hour until the dishes on the table were almost gone. They all lay sprawled on the sofa, unwilling to move.

Xia Sheng rubbed her youngest son's round belly.

After a while, Yue Qin called Mr. Kang to wash the dishes with him.

He actually wanted to talk to him about his biological father.

Yue Qin knew that Mr. Kang had been avoiding the topic of his biological father.

Yue Qin didn't know Mr. Kang's biological father, so naturally, he couldn't comment. But judging from the complicated will he left behind, it was clear that he loved his child very much.

On the other hand, Mr. Kang had no memories of his father. Moreover, his father had been on his way to get a divorce when he died in a car accident. Mr. Kang had always acted indifferent towards his biological father.

He said he didn't care, but he was incompetent in life, incompetent in love, and only had a business mind. He majored in management in college.

He cared about the only property his parents left him.

"I don't have a good impression of him." Mr. Kang had never told anyone, "I met my grandmother a few times when I was a child. They said that if my dad hadn't insisted on getting a divorce, they wouldn't have been in a car accident."

Mr. Kang whispered, "When they divorced, I was awarded to my mother."

But the divorce proceedings were never completed.

Yue Qin listened quietly.

"I don't know what kind of person he was. My grandmother said he had someone else outside, so he didn't even want his son who had just learned to speak."

His mother's side of the family didn't want him. His mother was an only child, and in their eyes, his father had killed his mother.

His grandmother and her family went abroad early on and never came back.

"I actually remember a little bit about him. I remember he was very, very tall and would lift me up."

"But I've never visited his grave. I guess he wouldn't recognize me now."

"Do you want to go visit his grave?"

Mr. Kang had never thought about visiting his father's grave before, but now he was thinking about it.

They had nothing to do on the weekend, so they decided to accompany Mr. Kang to visit the grave.

Xia Ling also came along. After all, she was his aunt!

Mr. Kang's father's grave wasn't in the city, but on a mountain in the next city.

The executor of the will back then was a lawyer friend of Mr. Kang's father. He was responsible for the burial and had been retired for several years. He just couldn't contact his old friend's son before. Now that he heard Mr. Kang was going to visit the grave, he also came along.

So the group became even larger.

When the lawyer arrived and saw their big family, including a little boy, he was also surprised.

Mr. Kang introduced everyone one by one: "They are my best friends."

The old lawyer was happy. He could tell that this group of friends were all good people.

So the group slowly walked up the mountain.

Mr. Kang was a little puzzled: "Why is my father buried here? Is this his hometown?"

Mr. Kang knew very little about his father.

"No, your father's hometown is in the north." The old lawyer couldn't help but tell his old friend's son more about him. "People there are particular about ancestral graves. After your father became rich, he made this place his ancestral grave, saying that you should all be buried here in the future."

Yue Qin said, "So that's how it is."

The group climbed to the top of the mountain before they saw the grave. There were two graves, overgrown with weeds because no one had taken care of them for a long time.

"This is my parents' grave?"

The old lawyer shook his head. "Your mother was taken away by your grandmother. Your father and his younger brother are buried here."

"My father had a younger brother?"

"He passed away when he was very young. Your father said that people from their hometown must be buried in the ancestral grave, or they will become wandering ghosts."

"According to their customs, you have to visit the grave once a month. Your father used to come here to sweep the grave every month." said the old lawyer.

Mr. Kang was so tired that he was panting. He couldn't help but dry heave with every other breath. Hearing this, he couldn't help but complain about his father: "He really misunderstood his descendants. Sweeping the grave every month? If I have to climb this mountain every month, I'll be in the ground soon too…"

Yue Qin felt that Mr. Kang really had the potential to argue with his father. He was more practical and said, "Come on, let's pull out the weeds together" to prevent Mr. Kang from continuing.
