Chapter 126: So-called Dad

Mr. Kang and Master couldn't go to work all afternoon. Xia Sheng and Yue Qin had rushed back because Master was struck by lightning and they were afraid something serious had happened.

Now that they were fine, the two of them had to go back to work.

Yue Qin tossed a set of keys to the two of them.

"Remember to lock the door when you leave."

"We're not going to work this afternoon." Mr. Kang didn't consider himself an outsider at all and took out his computer. After all, most things could be communicated online. "We'll pick up Kangkang after school."

"Okay, I'll call Teacher Liu and let her know." Xia Sheng said.

Teacher Liu received the call that afternoon. She was now starting to believe that the other party was really Kangkang's father's cousin. After all, no boss of a school had so much free time to pick up their child.

As soon as Kangkang came out, he saw his little brother. He hadn't seen his little brother for many days, and Kangkang was a little happy.

When his little brother was around, he always disliked him for lying. When he wasn't around, he was worried that he would be beaten up for lying outside.

Kangkang looked at his little brother. He didn't seem to have been beaten, but he looked thin and hungry.

Mr. Kang picked him up and said, "Have you missed me these past few days?"

Kangkang sighed and said, "I think about you every day."

Mr. Kang was a little happy.

Kangkang said, "Every day, I worry that you'll get beaten up outside for lying. Pigeon One said that someone in our neighborhood got beaten up for lying."

Kangkang even had a dream that his brother was beaten up and kept calling for his brother.

Because on TV, when his brother was bullied, he would cry and call for his brother.

Mr. Kang said, "I wasn't beaten up."

Kangkang glanced at his brother. "Brother, you didn't say you didn't lie…"

Mr. Kang looked at Master beside him. It was really embarrassing to continue lying in front of him, so he said awkwardly, "I…"

Master said, "He didn't lie. He was bullied by bad people."

Mr. Kang was a little relieved and gave Master a grateful look.

As soon as they got home, Kangkang took his brother to the children's room.

"Brother! Listen to this again. Dad said the wine is ready, and he's going to take it out tonight. Then there won't be anything in the jar for you to listen to."

Master watched as Mr. Kang pressed his ear against the big jar, listening to the sounds. It was as if he wasn't watching someone listening to sounds from a jar.

He saw Mr. Kang as a child, wearing a black apron, helping his father wash rice and a small jar in the kitchen, mixing something red into the glutinous rice. Big and small, in the kitchen, the big father seriously talked about his childhood memories.

Master closed his eyes enviously, as if he could smell the aroma of wine from Yue Qin's childhood.

Kangkang, worthy of being the official son of this family, took his brother to the kitchen after listening to the sound of the wine in the big jar. He rummaged through the fridge and found the purple potato and yam cakes his father had made earlier.

"Are you hungry?"

These cakes were made by Dad and kept in the fridge so Mom could fry them up whenever she wanted to eat them.

Kangkang was hungry and wanted to eat, but he was too short to reach. He decided to direct his tall little brother.

"Brother, you start the fire."

Mr. Kang almost burned down the kitchen last time, and he still had a shadow. He looked at Kangkang incredulously. "I almost burned down the kitchen last time…"

He still remembered the moment the lighter exploded. His first reaction was to quickly grab Big Dad's pot lid. It was a good thing Big Dad's pot was big and heavy, otherwise, it might not have been covered.

Kangkang said, "If you fall down, you have to get back up where you fell."

"What did Dad say last time?"

Mr. Kang said, "He said I shouldn't turn the knob to the maximum when I turn it on, that the flint will ignite automatically."

"Then don't turn it to the maximum this time." Kangkang instructed.

Mr. Kang was still hesitant. "What if something goes wrong again?"

The flames that suddenly shot up were really scary.

Master, who was holding a can of rice puffs, said, "I know how to light a fire."

Mr. Kang turned his head and looked at his new brother in disbelief. "You do?"

"I used to eat instant noodles before I started eating self-heating hot pot. You have to boil your own water for instant noodles."

Master said as he stepped forward to light the fire.

Mr. Kang refused. "I'll do it myself."

As long as he learned how to light a fire, with all the time he had spent helping out in the kitchen, the rest wouldn't be so difficult. Wasn't it just pouring in the oil, the vegetables, and the seasonings?

Mr. Kang had it all figured out.

Mr. Kang swallowed and walked over to the stove. He could still remember the scene of the flames shooting up the last time he touched the knob.

Don't turn the knob to the maximum.

Mr. Kang turned the knob, and sure enough, this time the lighter hissed twice, and a string of small flames shot out.

It wasn't the raging fire from last time, but small flames.

Mr. Kang breathed a sigh of relief. "Bring the pot!"

Mr. Kang put on Big Dad's black apron, feeling like he was about to show off his skills.

When Yue Qin came back, he saw the three of them huddled around a table as if they were guarding some rare treasure.

"What are you doing?" Yue Qin took off his jacket and hung it on the coat rack, walking towards them.

On the table that the three of them were guarding was a plate of… a plate of…

Yue Qin walked closer and saw that the black and purple things should be the purple potato and yam cakes from the fridge.

"You fried them?" Yue Qin said with a smile. "You overcame your fear of the stove?"

After the other party almost burned down the kitchen last time, he wanted to teach him, but the guy got scared.

Mr. Kang didn't have time to talk about it and brought the plate over. "Try it! I made it! No, the three of us made it!"

The three of them immediately recounted the whole process.

"We lit the fire, poured the oil, and fried it!"

These purple potato and yam cakes weren't deep-fried, but pan-fried. Yue Qin looked at the oily finished product and still took a bite. "Delicious."

"But you can only eat two. We have to save two for Mom." Kangkang said.

Yue Qin said, "Dad will only eat one, and save three for Mom."

Yue Qin was afraid that they would make him eat more. As someone who could cook delicious food, he was very particular about what he ate, so he quickly changed the subject. "Dad is going to strain the rice wine!"

At once, the three of them forgot about the cakes and followed Yue Qin. Yue Qin took the clean wooden bucket and cheesecloth. This time, he had more helpers than last time.

Master and Mr. Kang were in charge of holding the cheesecloth over the wooden bucket. Yue Qin first opened Mr. Kang's small jar. He could already smell a fragrance.

"Dad, is this the wine Grandpa made to sell for money?"

"Grandpa makes many kinds of wine. This is just one of the simplest." Yue Qin said.

"Grandpa used to make wine with the cheapest corn. He would ride a tricycle with me and your uncle to the villages to collect corn because it was cheaper to collect it yourself."

What Yue Qin really wanted his children to remember was not just winemaking, but to remember it like he did.

"Your uncle and I were really happy those two years because we could ride around on the tricycle. Dad wasn't anxious either, but full of energy. I didn't know until last year that those two years were the hardest for your grandfather. He had just arrived in the city, he hadn't gone to school, and he had been cheated out of his money. But he didn't complain or give up. Instead, he continued to make wine. After only two years, your uncle and I both had bicycles."

The three of them listened intently, picturing in their minds a man who loved making wine, riding his bike with his two children, working hard to make a living in the city. He loved what he did.

Yue Qin turned around to see three pairs of almost identical eyes looking at him.

Yue Qin paused and rubbed Kangkang's head. "Every time Dad encounters a difficulty, he thinks of your grandfather. It will never be as difficult as it was back then."

Mr. Kang silently lowered his head, thinking about the days when the other party had lost his job.

Yue Qin thought that he also wanted his head rubbed, so he patted Mr. Kang's head.

Also squatting by the wooden bucket, Master looked at the two people who had their heads rubbed, silently reached out his hand, and placed it on his own head, rubbing it.

Seeing this, Yue Qin silently looked away. He… a young man of only twenty-eight!

He was really still a young man!

In high school, in college, everyone still wanted to be his dad.

Now, why was he the only one left who wanted to be a dad?
