Chapter 107: Past Actions

Li, the assistant, had a deep impression of Minister Yue. He always seemed to be doing well, as Li had rarely seen him frown.

Li believed that men who were struggling financially usually frowned, smoked, and drank, just like his own good-for-nothing father.

Because of this belief, Li was shocked when he walked into Minister Yue's house with his boss.

The small living room was crowded with people.

An old woman with dementia sat on the sofa.

Li knew she had dementia because the first thing she said when she saw his boss, Mr. Kang, was:

"Young man, you've grown so much! Time flies. The last time I was at this teahouse, you were just a little girl in a dress. Now you're all grown up!"

The room fell silent with awkwardness. Li was thankful that the meeting was at Minister Yue's house.

The old woman continued, cheerfully adding, "Young man, do you remember how you dreamed of being a little princess when you were little? It's good that you've become a young man now. Your mom and dad must be relieved."

"Young man, did you inherit your father's teahouse?"

Then Xia Sheng, Minister Yue’s wife, led her grandmother to the sofa and asked her to sit down, preventing her from saying anything more.

A little boy sitting next to them looked at their boss, frowned, and said, "You've grown so tall, the bed won't be long enough."

Just then, a young man who looked like a college student walked out of the kitchen, munching on two golden-brown objects.

"These sesame balls are really delicious. I ate the last two."

Minister Yue looked at the crowd, then at Mr. Kang, and said, "It's really not convenient at home. Let's talk outside."

Mr. Kang said, "Let's talk in the study."

Li was taken aback. They have a study here? No, how did the boss know they have a study?

The boss had never experienced the life of a poor man. He probably thought everyone had a study.

To Li’s surprise, Minister Yue actually did have a study. As Li was about to follow them, he heard his boss say, "You stay here."

Mr. Kang followed the big dad, Minister Yue, into the study. Only then did he realize how small the house was. He had grown taller, and the desk was no longer at his height.

He used to have to stand on his tiptoes to see the bottom row of photos on the photo wall. Now he could see the top row directly.

Mr. Kang hesitated for a moment and didn't speak first.

"How are you feeling?" Yue Qin asked.

"I'm okay. The injuries from before have healed over the past three months."

"How's the company?"

"They tried to screw me over, but I'm not a pushover."

Their conversation fell into a pattern of one question and one answer, as awkward as a son who had run away from home for ten years finally returning to see his old father.

An air of unfamiliarity and awkwardness filled the room. They didn't even make eye contact, each looking at their own things.

Mr. Kang was looking at the photo wall, and Yue Qin was looking at the unfinished family portrait his wife was working on.

Just then, a child knocked on the door.

"Little brother, little brother, Grandma is scolding Mom again. Mom is not feeling well today, and she can't argue. I don't know how to argue either. Come out and help Mom!"

Fifteen minutes earlier…

Xia Sheng was pondering a question: Did this man have any memories at all?

He had called her "Mom" earlier, and she had responded naturally. But now, if he called her "Mom" again, she would get goosebumps all over.

And his arrival was terrible timing. Her mother had come to their house again.

Xia Sheng was in a good mood today and had even poured a cup of Pu'er tea for the old woman.

Now that the two men had gone to the study to discuss public relations matters, Xia Sheng naturally poured a cup of tea for the assistant who stayed behind.

The assistant was there to apologize. He thought this woman would be easy to talk to.

"Mr. Kang has been feeling very guilty about what happened before. We are very sorry for the harm we have caused you."

Xia Sheng looked at the man. He was wearing a pair of glasses, a suit, and a tie, looking every bit the social elite.

He had been inconspicuous earlier, but now, Xia Sheng felt like she had seen him somewhere before, but couldn't quite place him.

Xia Sheng didn't accept the apology. Instead, she said, "Let's talk after they come out."

Just then, her own mother came to pick up her grandmother.

As usual, her mother didn't speak to Xia Sheng, but started to scold her grandmother.

"Coming here again, coming here again! You know they don't welcome you, yet you still come!"

Xia Sheng didn't want to argue today and kept silent.

But her mother seemed to be in a bad mood today and continued, "You're lucky that I'm your daughter and I'm still taking care of you."

Xia Sheng took a deep breath and pulled her son over, asking him to go to the study and play with his father and "brother." Children really shouldn't listen to adults arguing.

Little Kangkang immediately ran towards the study.

Li felt awkward. After all, this was a family matter. But soon, he was too preoccupied to feel awkward.

The child ran to the study to get help. "Little brother, little brother, Grandma is scolding Mom again. Mom is not feeling well today, and she can't argue. I don't know how to argue either. Come out and help Mom!"

In Little Kangkang's mind, every time Grandma came, she would scold Mom, and every time, he had to rely on his little brother to help.

Li stood there, thinking to himself, could it be... could it be that the mature and rational Minister Yue would actually get involved in an argument?

The mature and rational Minister Yue came out and was immediately met with his mother-in-law's sarcastic remarks.

"What? Are you going to criticize me too? Why don't you have this temper at work?"

Li quietly made himself scarce. This was a family matter, and even the smooth-talking Li chose to keep his mouth shut.

"If you have something to say, say it. Don't come here to vent your emotions. If you want to fix your relationship with your daughter, this is definitely not the way to do it," Mr. Kang spoke up.

Li was dumbfounded.

"Just because they are being respectful to you as their elder doesn't mean you deserve to be respected."

"Who are you? What right do you have to say these things to me?" Xia Sheng's mother glared at him.

"I..." Mr. Kang paused for a moment, then said without hesitation, "I'm a neutral party."

Li was speechless. His boss was like a machine gun, rattling off a bunch of words while claiming to be neutral. This was the most biased "neutral party" he had ever seen.

And at that moment, the little boy stood beside his boss, nodded, and echoed his words.

The whole scene was like... like the little boy had brought back his boss as backup.
