Chapter 118: On Self-Delusion

Mr. Kang soon found out why his second uncle was acting so strangely.

His assistant had sent him some documents, which he finally got around to reading.

It turned out there were problems with a real estate project that his second uncle was in charge of. Mr. Kang guessed his uncle was trying to use his, Mr. Kang's, situation to divert the attention of the board of directors and the public.

"Brother, brother, he's still talking." Little Kangkang was pressed against the door, eavesdropping on the bad uncle outside.

Mr. Kang looked at his son's posture. Although Little Kangkang was smart, he was still a child. Even the smartest children couldn't always tell right from wrong, and sometimes they unconsciously learned bad things from adults.

Because that was his, Mr. Kang’s, standard eavesdropping posture.

Mr. Kang looked at Little Kangkang and felt a headache coming on. How was he going to tell the couple outside that he had accidentally taught their son bad habits?

Little Kangkang's expression changed as he listened. He looked disgusted and even shook his head.

"What did he say?" Mr. Kang couldn't help but ask.

"He said that he thought Dad was a very capable person, dedicated to the company…"

Little Kangkang paused, then, educating his younger brother, said, "He's like those bad uncles who try to trick little kids. First, they say nice things, and then they give you candy."

"But when you wake up, you find yourself locked in a small box, and you'll never see your mom and dad again."

Mr. Kang was stunned. Where did he hear that scary children's story?

"Dad said that little brother is also a good boy, and he will make him fried dough balls later."

What did that have to do with anything?

Mr. Kang walked over and also pressed himself against the door, listening to the people talking outside.

He heard his second uncle say, "You're still too young. You don't know how dangerous the world is…" Second Uncle paused and said, "After all, you've done so much for the company. I truly value talent."

"You can call me anytime if you need anything."

After his second uncle left, Little Kangkang, who had been eavesdropping at the door, patted his younger brother on the shoulder. "Brother, brother, he's finally gone. Don't be angry. Dad will make you fried dough balls at noon."

Mr. Kang was a little puzzled. "Did he really just mention fried dough balls?" He hadn't heard it when he came over.

Little Kangkang felt a little guilty, but he didn't want to lie to his brother, so he said, "I saw you sitting there so angry, like a balloon that was about to explode, so I just said that to make you feel better."

Mr. Kang thought, "What kind of analogy is that?"

However, his second uncle had actually come and left without achieving anything? And he was so hypocritical when he left? Could there be more to it?

In fact, the reason Second Uncle came was that he had seen the company's public relations statement about his nephew apologizing.

Second Uncle thought about how young people these days valued face and dignity, so he came in person.

He didn't expect the other party to be so disrespectful. Second Uncle could only guess that his nephew had really grown up a little and had given a large sum of hush money.

Second Uncle couldn't believe that his nephew would actually apologize. He was such a proud person; he would only apologize if the sun rose from the west.

Previously, when the public relations department was being criticized, Mr. Kang refused to even apologize.

How could such a person apologize?

In the study, Mr. Kang squatted down and looked at Little Kangkang at eye level. He said seriously, "I'm sorry."

"It was my fault. I shouldn't have eavesdropped on other people's conversations at the door." Mr. Kang explained that it wasn't good to eavesdrop at the door.

"We should respect other people's privacy."

"But you didn't tell me to stop when I was listening just now." Little Kangkang didn't understand.

"Because I also really wanted to know what they were talking about." Mr. Kang touched his nose and said sheepishly.

Little Kangkang sighed. This was his brother. What else could he do? He could only pat his brother on the shoulder and forgive him.

At noon, Yue Qin was about to start making lunch. Considering that Mr. Kang really had work to do, Yue Qin didn't call him out to help.

Xia Sheng took the family's clothes out of the washing machine.

It was only when she took them out that she noticed an extra black nightgown.

The dirty clothes that needed to be washed were all thrown into the laundry basket on the balcony. She hadn't paid much attention and had just thrown them all into the washing machine.

The black nightgown was wrinkled. She shook it twice, but it was still wrinkled.

The problem was that it was a silk nightgown and shouldn't have been washed in the washing machine.

Xia Sheng loved cleanliness and beauty. She had good taste. She chose all the clothes for the family, so she naturally knew the materials of the clothes just by touching them.

She shouldn't have been so busy eavesdropping just now and just dumped all the clothes from the laundry basket into the washing machine. If she had paid more attention, she would have seen it.

Xia Sheng looked at the wrinkled nightgown and felt heartbroken. She also had a silk green dress! If anyone washed her dress like this, she would probably fight them to the death.

Xia Sheng had a headache. She knocked on the study door.

"Big Kangkang, I washed your nightgown." Not only did she wash it, but she also put it in the washing machine.

The study door opened. Big Kangkang was stunned for a moment. He looked at the person in front of him and his own nightgown. He silently took his nightgown and asked tentatively in a small voice, "How about… I pay for the water and labor costs?"

When they had messed up the kitchen, they had gotten completely soaked, so their pajamas were all wet. After changing in the study, there was nowhere to put the wet clothes, so he had reflexively thrown them into the laundry basket on the balcony. It wasn't intentional.

Xia Sheng asked, "Have you ever washed your own clothes?"

"No…"

"Don't you feel that your nightgown is different from yesterday?"

"It's wet now…" Mr. Kang was a little confused.

"I finally understand why so many people want to be friends with rich people." Xia Sheng patted the silly rich kid on the shoulder. "Go hang it up to dry."

As a result, the silly child really went to dry the clothes in a daze. Xia Sheng couldn't stand it anymore and explained, "This garment is made of silk. It wrinkles very easily and can't be machine washed."

Mr. Kang thought it was ruined, so he turned the nightgown over and over. There were no holes in it, so he didn't think it was a big deal.

He looked at Xia Sheng in confusion and realized that she really cherished clothes, so he said, "It's okay. I have a few more of the same one at home."

Xia Sheng thought, "…" She suddenly understood why some people didn't like being friends with rich people.

Mr. Kang didn't care about this. Now that they were both on the balcony, the people inside shouldn't be able to hear them.

They rarely had time alone together, so Mr. Kang seized the opportunity and whispered, "By the way, I've contacted the person about the piano I mentioned before. Should I have it delivered here? Have you considered moving?"

Xia Sheng was shaking out the clothes. She was stunned when she heard this. "Are you serious?"

"Of course, I am. Didn't I write you a promise note when I was a kid?"

Xia Sheng looked at this silly and rich young man in disbelief. She was very puzzled. He was actually still so rich and hadn't been cheated out of his money. "I thought that promise note was like the one I wrote to my mom when I was a kid."

"What did you write?" Mr. Kang was very curious.

"I wrote that when I grow up, I'm going to marry the best boxer."

"And then I'm going to defeat my dad, defeat his boxing gym, steal all his students, and make him never able to hold his head up high again."

Mr. Kang regretted asking about this sad matter. He said, "I'm sorry."

Xia Sheng laughed. "Why are you apologizing to me?"

Mr. Kang said, "I meant that you don't have to take those childhood promises seriously. Children are not legally competent. When I was a child, I also promised my second uncle that I would give him the company when I grew up."

Xia Sheng looked at him in disbelief. He was such a pure and innocent little thing when he was a child.

Mr. Kang said awkwardly, "Everyone has a dark past. That's why I said we were all the same when we were kids. We were all miserable."

Xia Sheng wanted to say that he was rich, but then she thought about it. A child who was rich but had no parents to protect him might not have had it easy either.

It was just a different kind of sadness than hers.

Mr. Kang was afraid that she would have the idea of fulfilling the promise she made as a child. This young couple was true love in his mind, a perfect match, a match made in heaven. They absolutely could not be separated!

They couldn't even have the slightest thought of it.

"You have a child. You absolutely cannot have any thoughts of fulfilling that promise."

Xia Sheng looked at this anxious man. One child? Why did she feel like there were two?

"I only said that because I didn't want to accept your ridiculously expensive piano. People are still a little overwhelmed by this kind of unexpected fortune. But if you insist on giving me something… I wear a size small in silk pajamas…" Xia Sheng said.

When Mr. Kang heard this, his nervousness and disappointment from having his piano rejected vanished. He suddenly understood.

It turned out that when you cared about someone, you wanted them to accept the things you gave them.

At this moment, Little Kangkang came out with a plate of fried dough balls.

"Mom, little brother, eat your fried dough balls!"

There were six fried dough balls on the plate, two for each of them.

Mr. Kang looked at the golden-brown fried dough balls. They were much smaller than he remembered.

It was probably because he had grown up, so the fried dough balls seemed especially small.

However, one bite and it was still the familiar aroma, the familiar taste. The feeling of happiness that burst from his taste buds spread all the way to his heart, as if he had become a child again.

It was as if he wasn't standing on the balcony at this moment, but sitting at the table again. Next to him was his big, burly dad. Big Dad divided a few fried dough balls for him and skewered them with chopsticks so that it would be easier for him to hold them. Big Dad would say that they could only eat dinner when Mom got back, so they would eat fried dough balls first. However, they couldn't eat too many, or they wouldn't be comfortable sleeping at night.

That feeling of happiness made his heart tremble.

Yue Qin fried a few more in the kitchen. After all, there were now two Kangkangs in the family who liked to eat them, and one of them had grown up.

Mr. Kang returned to the kitchen. He was a little embarrassed at first, after all, Yue Qin had read many of the messages he had sent in reply to his second uncle.

"Are you done eating?" Yue Qin didn't laugh at him. He just said, "Does it still taste the same now?"

After all, people's tastes changed as they grew up.

As an adult who had grown up in a day, Mr. Kang said, "It tastes the same as before. Can I have another one?"

Yue Qin said, "You can have as many as you want."

"After all, you're my innocent, kind, and cute good friend. I specially fried a few more for you."

Innocent, kind, and cute good friend. This was also his previous reply.

Strange. He was clearly being teased, but he felt very relaxed. He didn't feel the awkwardness of being offended. Instead, he couldn't help but explain, "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have used your WeChat to reply to him, but I had my reasons. I was trying to help you. My second uncle is not a good person. He didn't show up when I was unconscious, but as soon as I woke up, he came looking for you."

"I agreed to meet him because I wanted to see what he was planning."

"I guessed it." Mr. Kang said with a smug look on his face when he mentioned this. "I guessed what you were thinking when I saw the chat log. Am I not different now? I'm not biased at all now, and I don't use the worst possible assumptions to guess what others are thinking."

He had realized before that he was sometimes very negative and would use the worst possible assumptions to predict other people's actions.

In fact, several times after the fact, he realized that things were not as bad as he had imagined, but because of his overreaction, the whole thing was beyond repair.

So this time, he was really happy. He was happy that he could trust people, and he was happy about his own wit, calmness, and rationality.

Yue Qin looked at the adult who was so happy to show off that he had grown up, matured, calmed down, and become rational.

So this person probably hadn't been pretending to be a child at all before.

Yue Qin silently picked up two fried dough balls for this adult.
