Chapter 83: Life Before

The hospital ward was almost full, even the infusion room was packed. Children had to receive their IV drips in the hallway, surrounded by other kids and their parents.

Parents held their children in their arms as they received their infusions. Most of the children were asleep, and the parents had to keep an eye on the IV bottles to prevent blood backflow.

Yue Qin held his son in his arms. He didn't think much of his son's previous desire to buy sacks, assuming it was just the fever talking.

Mr. Kang had never experienced anything like this before. He didn't dare to be held by big dad and only dared to glance at Xia Sheng's reaction from the corner of his eye.

In the instant their eyes met, he didn't catch any particular expression, so he quickly looked away.

The child's fever had subsided, his stomach no longer hurt. He sat obediently on an empty chair nearby.

Yue Qin was a little puzzled.

"Honey, I'm a little hungry," Xia Sheng suddenly said, her voice unexpectedly calm, devoid of anger.

Mr. Kang couldn't figure out what she was thinking but was still scared. He couldn't help but look at big dad.

"What do you want to eat? I'll go buy it."

"I saw corn on the cob being sold outside when we came in."

Mr. Kang's small hand clutched his dad's clothes, not wanting him to leave at all. However, big dad still left.

As big dad walked further and further away, Mr. Kang felt uncomfortable all over, but he didn't dare turn his head to look at the person beside him.

The child waited for a while, but the other person didn't speak. So, he whispered, "I heard that people hallucinate and talk nonsense when they have a fever."

Xia Sheng looked at her child thoughtfully. The statement was so absurd that her mind was a jumble.

The child lowered his head, looking a little listless, perhaps due to his illness. His voice was timid: "Mom..."

Xia Sheng had met the new CEO of her husband's company twice. Once was when she brought her son to pick her husband up from work. The art center was having a big training session for them that day.

Xia Sheng calculated the time and sent her son to her husband.

When she arrived, the new boss was reprimanding an employee. He first scolded the employee, then left him hanging while discussing matters with other subordinates.

She had glanced at the CEO then and felt a strong sense of aggression from him, the kind of capitalist who didn't see people as people.

This feeling was confirmed during their second encounter. A long meeting, including families, lasted for four hours. The CEO maintained an aloof posture throughout, as if everyone was not his employee but rather an indentured servant.

She didn't believe a word of what her son had just said because it was too absurd and bizarre. Children sometimes say strange and odd things.

Logically, it was more likely that her son had heard something from other children or parents at the school's art performance and was now trying to scare his father.

However, at this moment, the child kept his head down, too ashamed to look at her, stammering to explain his previous words. Then he looked up at her again, restlessly fidgeting in his chair.

As Xia Sheng got up, Mr. Kang gulped and shrank back.

Xia Sheng reached out, and the child's first reaction was to cover his nose with his other hand, the one without the IV.

However, Xia Sheng just reached out and placed the IV tube under a new warm water bottle.

"Don't move," Xia Sheng said.

Mr. Kang was momentarily bewildered. He suddenly realized, is this the adult world?

No hysterics, no emotional breakdowns, just calmness and reason?

Mr. Kang gradually calmed down. After two deep breaths, he realized that his previous explanations were superfluous.

Actually... Xia Sheng and Yue Qin were different. She had been out most of the time recently and hadn't been home much. She didn't know him well enough. He didn't need to say anything. Just by the fact that he was only four years old and saying such things, Xia Sheng's first reaction would definitely be that he was talking nonsense.

His explanation would only expose his adult mentality, but now that things had come to this, he could only recall Yue Qin's calmness in handling things and wait and see.

Don't act rashly, Mr. Kang warned himself again, remembering big dad's usual attitude in handling things.

Big dad finally returned with the corn on the cob. As soon as he came back, he felt something was wrong.

His son was sitting obediently in the chair, his back straight, while his wife was looking at their son, seemingly lost in thought.

Yue Qin handed the corn on the cob to his wife: "Do you also think he's being too well-behaved today?"

Xia Sheng took it. She didn't really have an appetite, but she still took two bites.

Mr. Kang was also calmly observing. He noticed that Xia Sheng was still observing him, and now he had completely lost the courage to confess to big dad.

Big dad had been keeping his relationship with Little Parrot a secret from mom.

And he, in a daze, had not only sold himself out but also sold out big dad.

He suddenly began to feel that he was far less capable of handling things than the couple.

There was still a while to go before the IV drip was finished. Yue Qin looked at the time and whispered to his wife, "You go back to the car and get some sleep. I'll stay here."

Xia Sheng really needed to calm down. She hummed in agreement and gave her son a complicated look.

Mr. Kang carefully peeked at them. He was also very impressed. Violent mom was always there, and the image of her in his mind was very impulsive and violent.

And at this moment, he felt a kind of calm charm that belonged to adults.

It wasn't the first time Yue Qin had been to the hospital. The couple was all too familiar with the place. But it was better now, not like before when they were both constantly calculating sleep time.

At that time, they were both working and had to calculate their time carefully. Every visit to the hospital was a chaotic rush.

Xia Sheng couldn't actually sleep, but she still leaned against her beloved and rested for a while. She had been very sleepy before, but now she couldn't fall asleep even with her eyes closed.

"Honey, can I borrow your phone? I can't find mine. I'll call it."

Yue Qin handed his phone to his wife.

Xia Sheng made the call and quickly found her phone. It turned out to have fallen under the seat.

Xia Sheng put the phone in Yue Qin's pocket and said, "I'm going to the car to rest for a bit."

Mr. Kang's heart didn't settle down until his mother was gone. He was apprehensive for a while.

"Dad..."

Big dad turned his head and saw the child's face full of ingratiating smiles as he whispered to him, "Dad --"

Big dad was a little puzzled: "Do you have something to tell me today?"

Mr. Kang hesitated.

"Dad, can I have the rest of Mom's corn on the cob?" the child asked cautiously.

Yue Qin said, "If you like corn on the cob, Dad will cook it for you in the future. You can't eat this one. You got sick this time because of your stomach."

Mr. Kang thought for a moment and said, "Then can't I eat fried dough twists anymore?"

Yue Qin: "You can't eat fried food for the time being."

"Okay." Mr. Kang sighed, looking as if he had given up on the entire world. "If only I had known how delicious fried food was before."

"You haven't eaten it before?" Yue Qin asked.

"I used to have Western food for every meal."

Yue Qin couldn't help but whisper, "I'm suddenly very curious about what kind of environment you lived in before."

Mr. Kang felt that this was a very good opportunity. Due to big dad's perceptiveness, he felt that it was only a matter of time before Mom found out the truth. So he quickly prepared his dad mentally and whispered --

"Dad, I used to live in an environment without a father or mother. And my family was rich. Having money but no elders is a very scary thing. The twenty-something servants in our house all listened to me. They were all paid by my family and only saw me as their boss. No one ever treated me like family, and no one dared to discipline me. This led to me having a very serious psychological shadow."

Mr. Kang was still a little angry when he thought about it now. He gave his dad an example: "Other kids might get scolded for buying two extra toys. I bought the villa next door to store my toys, and no one ever said a word to me. When I was seven or eight years old, I had already achieved most people's dreams in life. So for a long time, I didn't know what to do. That feeling was really painful."

After listening to the whole story, Yue Qin showed a complicated expression of an adult: "Now I suddenly understand why you were so particular about making friends before. You had to have a butler, a chef, and a driver. Ordinary people who heard these words would only want to hit you."

"Common ground is really important."

Mr. Kang sighed: "You don't understand. My life was a dark one, corrupted by wealth. It looked comfortable on the surface but was actually very empty."

Through chatting with big dad, Mr. Kang also calmed down. After the doctor confirmed that he was fine, they went home. Mom didn't say anything along the way and didn't even look at him strangely anymore.

Mr. Kang even optimistically thought that maybe Mom believed what he had said before. After all, he was only a four-year-old child, and he could say anything nonsensical.

Early the next morning, Mr. Kang was fished out of bed. He thought it was big dad waking him up, but he was greeted by violent mom's words --

"Let's talk."

"Mom, I want to sleep a little longer."

"But I want to talk to you about your seemingly comfortable but actually empty past."
