Chapter 105: He Didn't Call

(Back at the company.)

Three months was enough time for the injured body to heal. Only a scar remained on his chest. After the checkup, the doctor simply advised him to take good care of himself.

The VIP ward was exceptionally quiet. Mr. Kang stood up first. This body... it was as if he was using it for the first time, so big and clumsy.

The man frowned as he stood up.

"Get me a wheelchair."

The assistant was puzzled but immediately went to fetch one.

When the assistant returned, he also brought a fruit basket, clearly a gift from a visitor.

The boss never cared about these things before. He didn't like anyone visiting him. Occasionally, he would bring back gifts from visitors, but he never asked who sent them.

So, the assistant didn't say anything.

This time, however, after the boss sat in the wheelchair, he glanced at the fruit basket.

The assistant thought the boss was unhappy and immediately apologized, "I'll throw it away."

"No need." The man paused and then asked, "Who sent this?"

"An old director. He heard you were awake and wanted to see you."

The assistant carefully observed the boss's expression while speaking and noticed a hint of disappointment on his face.

He didn't dare to continue the topic and quickly said, "Mr. Kang, let me take you out for some sunshine."

The man didn't refuse.

The VIP area had a dedicated garden on the top floor, over 300 square meters. Naturally, someone like the boss wouldn't go downstairs.

The assistant pushed the boss into the elevator. Once inside, to avoid making the boss uncomfortable, he squatted down beside the wheelchair.

As he squatted, he couldn't shake the feeling that the boss was acting strangely today.

The boss was always quiet, and he still was. But for some reason, the assistant sensed a change in him.

Just then, another patient from the VIP area entered the elevator. Seeing Mr. Kang, he couldn't help but steal a few glances. After all, the man had been all over the news lately.

The assistant glared at the patient, who immediately looked away.

In the assistant's eyes, his boss could fire anyone he wanted. Others didn't need to stare like that.

The assistant, Li Wei, had a rough childhood. His father was abusive, his mother committed suicide, and he ended up in juvenile detention after a fight. His life was in shambles.

Back then, this man, several years younger than him, stood before him and asked:

"I'll give you a chance to choose your life again. You can have wealth, knowledge, attend the best universities, and work for the best companies."

"The price is, you'll work for me for the rest of your life. Your life belongs to me."

At the time, he thought he had encountered a delusional patient and scoffed, "If you have the ability, I'll be your dog!"

From then on, he attended the best schools, received the best education, and his world was no longer confined to that small, dark home.

Now, the outside world was filled with criticism towards this man, but the assistant knew he excelled at turning the tables.

After reaching the rooftop, the assistant pushed the wheelchair, analyzing the company's current situation.

"The board of directors has received news that you are awake."

"How many directors called?" the man asked.

"They all called to inquire." The assistant pushed him into the sunlight.

He carefully observed the boss's expression, but strangely, this time he couldn't tell if the man was happy or not.

He didn't know how to respond.

The outside world thought his boss was difficult to get along with, but in reality, as long as you understood his moods and didn't provoke him, everything was fine.

After a long silence, the boss suddenly asked, "Did anyone else call?"

"It was all business," the assistant replied, quickly analyzing the intention behind the question.

"Many directors and employees came to visit." The assistant continued.

Hearing about the employees, the man asked again, "Who were they?"

Assuming the boss wanted to assess the situation, the assistant began listing names, "Li Yue, Li Xuemei..."

He rattled off a long list of directors' names, but the boss's expression remained unchanged. He then mentioned some employees, including several department heads who had come to visit, all of whom he had turned away.

It wasn't the right time to let them know the boss's exact condition, and the boss probably didn't want to see them anyway.

The assistant continued listing employee names, but the boss's expression remained unchanged.

Something wasn't right. The boss must have had a reason for asking, otherwise he would have stopped him by now.

Since he hadn't been stopped, it meant the boss hadn't heard the name he was waiting for.

Who could it be?

The assistant suddenly realized the boss might be asking about his girlfriend. After all, it was normal to have a newfound appreciation for love after a brush with death.

The problem was, the boss had been in a coma for three months, and the doctors had hinted that he might not wake up. His girlfriends had all run away.

Of course, he couldn't say that. The assistant could only say, "I turned them all away."

"Anyone else?" the man asked casually, as if he didn't care.

The problem was, the assistant knew him. This definitely required an answer.

"Miss Li and the others... they might be busy lately."

"Anyone else?"

He wasn't asking about them?

The assistant suddenly understood. The boss must be asking about something else. "Some media outlets heard you were awake and wanted to interview you. I've refused them all."

"Are they here because of the employee I fired..." The man paused, unable to utter the name.

The assistant assumed he had forgotten the name of the fired employee and said, "Yes, the security department head, Yue Qin, whose son is mute."

He continued to observe his boss's expression while speaking and noticed a flicker of displeasure when he mentioned the name.

It seemed the boss really disliked that employee. He had already fired the man, yet he was still unhappy hearing his name.

"The PR department has contacted Yue Qin. Although he refused, they have a new plan."

"Did he call me?"

"I haven't heard from the company yet, Mr. Kang. If you want to know, I'll contact them immediately."

"I'm asking about a personal call."

"No." The assistant thought to himself that he had interacted with Yue Qin before. He actually admired the man, but he was too upright... He probably wouldn't compromise and call the boss even in his next life.

"He's busy right now. The company is already preparing the PR strategy."

"What's the strategy?"

"Many people are criticizing you online, claiming Yue Qin is a good man. His college classmates have been painting him as a devoted, family-oriented husband. As long as we disprove this image, public opinion will shift."

This was their usual tactic. Netizens were quick to judge, seeing things in black and white. As long as they proved the other party was worse, the blame would shift.

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw the man in the wheelchair suddenly stand up.

"Tell them to stop the PR plan. I'm holding a press conference."

Wait a minute...

The assistant watched his boss walk towards the elevator. So the boss could walk? He just wanted to sit in a wheelchair?

After all, sitting in a wheelchair at this height made it very inconvenient to look at people.

The boss took a few steps, seemed a little unaccustomed, then turned around and glanced at him.

The assistant immediately pushed the wheelchair over.

Maybe the boss had just woken up and was weak, so he needed the wheelchair.

"Mr. Kang, it might not be appropriate to hold a press conference now. We can't deny that video..."

"The PR department suggests online PR first. You can then take on the image of a righteous man fighting against a scumbag."

As he spoke, the assistant saw a sharp glint in his boss's eyes.

He immediately shut his mouth.

Wait a minute, he was getting worse at reading the boss's emotions...

What was going on?

Could it be that the boss wasn't going back to criticize and deny everything at the press conference?

Impossible. If he wasn't going to do that, was he going back to apologize?

The assistant shuddered at the thought. The boss would never apologize.

He would never apologize in front of so many people. That would be asking for death!
