Chapter 155: Grand Finale 2

Xia Ling walked over and patted Kangkang's shoulder, who was stunned. "See, I told you, you two look alike."

Xia Sheng, holding her son's hand, also walked over and explained, "This is our good friend, Yue Qin."

Little Kangkang was still young, with a chubby baby face, so at first glance, he didn't look much like Yue Qin. But if you looked closely, you could imagine this is what Kangkang would look like when he grew up.

"He looks a little different from the video, I almost didn't recognize him," Yue Qin's mother said cheerfully.

"Come on, come on, don't just stand here. Put on your coats, it's cold outside. We have bone soup simmering at home!"

Knowing that many people were coming and they had a lot of luggage, Yue Qin's father drove his eight-seater van, which was just the right size for the whole family.

The only problem was the mountain of luggage, especially Mr. Kang's two large suitcases, which couldn't fit in the van.

"It's fine, we'll just call a car," Mr. Kang said.

Yue Qin's father immediately interjected, "What a waste of money! Wait a minute, I know someone nearby. We can leave the luggage at his place and I'll pick it up later."

It would cost at least two or three hundred yuan to hire a car during the New Year's holiday.

It's not easy to earn money, so why waste it?

"That's too much trouble," Mr. Kang said.

Yue Qin patted Mr. Kang's shoulder. "Let's just carry the luggage over."

So, they left the two large suitcases at Yue Qin's father's friend's place and finally piled into the van.

Mr. Kang looked out the window, a little puzzled. "I don't see any snow."

"Of course not on the main road, it's too dangerous. You'll see snow when we get to our place," Yue Qin's father explained.

Yue Qin's parents grew up in the village but moved to the city to build their careers. They never wanted to go back, but after retirement, they returned to the village.

It wasn't really a village anymore, though. After the government's redevelopment plan, it was now considered a town.

The two in the front seat saw the group of southerners in the back, including their daughter-in-law, glued to the windows.

"Wow—"

"The snow is so thick!"

"It's so beautiful!"

"This is nothing. Wait till we get to the mountain," Yue Qin's mother said. "We'll have bone soup while watching the snow. Shengsheng mentioned she liked pickled cabbage last time. The batch we made then wasn't that good, but this time it's authentic."

Xia Sheng was delighted. "Mom, you still remember that?"

"Of course, I was worried you wouldn't be used to the taste."

As everyone chatted, Mr. Kang glanced at Yue Qin, who was sitting next to him, not at all interested in the snow. He suddenly remembered something.

Yue Qin was from the north, although his Mandarin was very standard, without any accent.

But he was a northerner.

So the question was—

Why did he go to high school in their city?

Xia Sheng was a local, and they went to the same high school.

Mr. Kang couldn't help but ask the question in a low voice.

Yue Qin explained quietly, "My household registration is there, so I had to go back for the college entrance exam. My dad was worried that I would be ostracized and wouldn't make any friends if I went back in my senior year, so he sent me back in my freshman year."

That was also why his Mandarin had no accent.

Mr. Kang was stunned. "Why is your household registration in our city?"

"My dad's household registration is there."

Mr. Kang didn't understand much about what happened decades ago. He wanted to ask if Yue Qin's father was an orphan, how could he have moved from the south to the north?

But by then, they had already arrived at their destination.

"You guys go in and have some soup first, I'll go get the luggage," Yue Qin's father said.

"I'll go with you," Yue Qin immediately offered.

"I'll go with him too, we can take turns driving."

Yue Qin's father was about to hand over the car keys to Yue Qin, but he quickly waved his hand. "You can't drive here, the roads here are different from yours."

"He doesn't need to go, I can go alone."

Mr. Kang had already jumped into the car. After all, it was his luggage they were going to pick up.

Yue Qin skillfully turned the car around and saw Little Kangkang looking a little guilty.

As if he felt bad for bringing so much luggage.

"You didn't have to bring so many things, and don't be nervous. I've never brought friends home before, they're really happy I did."

He didn't know until they got off the plane that Little Kangkang had prepared so many gifts for everyone.

Mr. Kang was surprised. "You've never brought friends home?"

"I have friends, but they're just people I've walked a part of the journey with."

Mr. Kang nodded and said, "It's a pity I wasn't in the same class as you in high school."

"Then I would have to buy a new sack every day."

Mr. Kang immediately remembered one of Xia Sheng's favorite things to do in high school, which was to put people in sacks.

Wait a minute! Mr. Kang asked, "Among the people Xia Sheng wanted to put in sacks in high school, was there someone named Li Wei?"

"Yeah, why?"

"My assistant is also named Li Wei."

"It can't be the same person." Yue Qin certainly remembered that Mr. Kang's assistant was also called Li Wei. "That Li Wei was a little thug who often robbed people on the streets."

"Did he rob Xia Sheng?"

"Yes, he robbed her 'head'."

Mr. Kang said with a complicated expression, "I'm sorry, I guess I was also a part of your high school life."

"Huh?"

"Assistant Li used to be a little thug." Mr. Kang couldn't help but reveal the past of the now-elite Assistant Li. "I bailed him out of juvenile detention center."

"I guess that makes me a part of your high school life too." Little Kangkang was still excited. "Just don't tell Xia Sheng about this. I really need Assistant Li right now."

"I'll give him some time off when we're less busy, plus his annual leave. You can tell Xia Sheng then."

Yue Qin thought to himself, Assistant Li would want to hit someone if he heard this.

Little Kangkang was still excited. It was clear that even though he had misspoken, he was still happy to be here. When the car got on the highway, he couldn't help but ask out of curiosity, "Is your father from the south?" Originally, one Yue was from the north and the other from the south, which seemed quite far apart. They might have been related 500 years ago.

Now that both of them were from the south, it was possible that they were related within a few generations.

"His household registration has always been here," Yue Qin said thoughtfully.

His father never talked about his life before he came to his mother's village. Yue Qin knew he hadn't forgotten.

"Then he must really like the south."

As they chatted, they soon arrived at the airport and loaded the two suitcases into the car.

Mr. Kang couldn't help but say, "Maybe we are related within a few generations."

On the way back, Mr. Kang was exhausted and fell asleep in the back. Yue Qin was also thinking about this, but his reason was much simpler.

Mr. Kang's father's younger brother was called Yue Jianjun.

And his father's name was Yue Yijun.

The problem was, his father's birthday was August 1st, Army Day.

In the past, when people named their children, if the child was born on a significant holiday, they would often name the child after the holiday.

His father might have really changed the middle character of his name to "Yi" for the sake of convenience.

Yue Qin vaguely remembered that when he was in kindergarten, he had trouble writing his full name, so his father told him to just write "Yue Er", since he was the only second child in the Yue family, everyone would understand.

Yue Qin didn't say anything about it, after all, there were still many things that didn't add up.
