Chapter 119: Goosebumps

Mr. Kang, taking advantage of the heavy rain, managed to snag two extra meals at Yue Qin's place. But once the rain stopped, he had to return to his company and his own home.

When Assistant Li arrived to pick him up, his face was full of confusion. The boss recently…

Assistant Li had just arranged for a piano to be sent over, a gift for Minister Yue's wife.

Then, the boss instructed Assistant Zhang to begin acquiring the art center where Mrs. Yue worked.

Assistant Li initially thought his boss had turned over a new leaf, amicably ending things with his past girlfriends. He even dared to believe that the boss, having brushed with death, had gained a new appreciation for life and wanted to settle down.

However, after hearing about these recent events, Assistant Li was utterly bewildered.

Had the boss gone mad after waking up from his sleep? That was someone else's wife! No matter how morally ambiguous the boss had been in the past, he had never stolen anyone's girlfriend.

Now, seeing the boss emerge from their house, his face beaming with joy, like a melted iceberg radiating warmth and spring, happier than he had ever been even during his first love…

The moment the boss got into the car, his first words were: "Have you had lunch?"

Assistant Li swallowed nervously and nodded.

"I have too." The boss's voice was filled with uncontainable joy. "I had authentic Northeastern home-cooked food today, much better than what you get outside."

Of course, Mr. Kang was happy. Today's events had once again refreshed his perspective. He suddenly realized that sometimes, some people were truly deserving of trust.

How many people in this world could have such an experience?

Moreover, he had eaten five cornmeal balls, and Yue Qin even warned him to be careful of his second uncle.

Back in the kitchen, Yue Qin's original words were—

"He doesn't deserve to be called 'Uncle'."

Yue Qin rarely spoke ill of anyone, but this time, he couldn't hold back.

Hearing this, Mr. Kang felt a surge of joy. It at least proved that all along, he had been right.

Snapping back to reality, Mr. Kang noticed his assistant staring at him with a complicated expression.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

At that moment, Mr. Kang remembered something else. "Where did you buy my silk pajamas? I need you to buy another set, a women's small…"

He continued, "And a men's extra large, and one for a four-year-old boy…"

Assistant Li's expression became even more unreadable. "Are those for Mrs. Yue? Wouldn't this… be inappropriate?"

Mr. Kang was taken aback. "What's inappropriate about it?"

Assistant Li hesitated. "Mr. Kang, if this gets out, it will damage your reputation. There are plenty of fish in the sea; why target someone else's wife?"

What was the underlying meaning behind those words?

Mr. Kang's eyes widened, goosebumps erupting all over his body. He was so terrified that he almost wanted to jump out of the moving car.

How could anyone have such a terrifying thought?

"Mr. Kang?"

Mr. Kang unleashed a torrent of reprimands. "Your thoughts are too filthy! How could you say such a thing? Do you realize how terrifying that is?"

Assistant Li was even more confused. "I don't…"

Mr. Kang couldn't shake off the goosebumps. Just thinking about it made him shudder. "That's like… like saying I'm going to hit on my aunt…"

Assistant Li instantly felt goosebumps erupt on his own skin. The mere thought was enough to send chills down one's spine.

"That's not… " Assistant Li was bewildered. "How can you even compare those two?"

Mr. Kang took a deep breath, forcing the terrifying thought out of his mind and regaining his composure. "You're right, they can't be compared. My aunt, who wishes I would drop dead so her son could inherit everything, can't compare to the violent… Xia Sheng."

Assistant Li thought to himself, that's not the point, that's not the point at all.

The point is, why would you put a beautiful young woman who's only four years younger than you in the same category as your aunt?

At that moment, Mr. Kang also realized a problem.

"It's not normal for me to be so close to them for no reason…"

In this world, if others saw this, they would definitely spin it into a scandalous affair.

The thought of his name being linked with Xia Sheng's in a romantic scandal made Mr. Kang shudder.

Assistant Li thought to himself, so the boss has finally realized it too.

Mr. Kang sighed. "We need to find a way to make everything seem natural."

Assistant Li thought to himself, that… might be impossible.

You had already spoken ill of them before, and now your relationship has improved. No matter how you look at it, it's strange.

The only fortunate thing was that Minister Yue was no longer at the company. Otherwise, everyone would have discovered that their boss was going to Minister Yue's house for meals every day.

A grown man, a capable and wealthy adult, instead of dating or spending lavishly, was clocking in at someone else's house for meals every day.

Even more frightening, he even slept over.

The reason was that he didn't have an umbrella. But the problem was that he called someone to deliver his pajamas and clothes for the next day, but not an umbrella.

Everything about it seemed incredibly odd.

"We need to find a way. I also need to find a way to get Yue Qin back to work, preferably with a grand gesture, to show everyone that I respect him."

Assistant Li almost wanted to kneel. He couldn't hold back any longer. "No matter how he returns now, it will seem strange."

Given the boss's current frequency of freeloading, it was only a matter of time before people found out.

Add in Minister Yue's beautiful wife, and even if outsiders remained unaware, within the company, he could only imagine how unpleasant the rumors would become.

Mr. Kang nodded, falling silent.

Seeing his displeasure, Assistant Li spoke up. "While you were unconscious, Mr. Kang, we didn't give up on investigating the car accident. Although the driver insists that he was drunk and that's why it happened, we found out that it might be related to Old Mr. Kang's side."

Old Mr. Kang referred to his grandfather and grandmother.

Mr. Kang was slightly surprised. "Them?"

"After the driver's accident, his wife received a work-related injury compensation from the company. The compensation was signed off by Old Mr. Kang."

Mr. Kang wasn't overly surprised. His so-called grandparents had never liked him. The most frequent words they uttered during his childhood were about giving things to his cousin.

The old folks loved to say that he had so much anyway, what was wrong with giving away one or two things?

When he was little, it was toys, remote-controlled airplanes, and the like.

As he grew older, it became sports cars, yachts, private jets.

When he woke up from the accident, his uncle, aunt, and cousin all paid him symbolic visits, although he didn't see any of them. However, his grandparents didn't even bother to come.

Now calm, Mr. Kang couldn't help but ponder a question:

Could grandparents truly treat their orphaned grandson this way? What were they thinking?

Even Xia Sheng's mother, that biased, volatile woman with her harsh words, wouldn't go this far, would she?

Suddenly, Mr. Kang was curious. He wanted to know the answer to this question, and there was a way. "That lifesaver I mentioned before, where did you arrange for him?"

"He's in our office. Young lad, full of energy." In just a day and a half, he had already offended everyone in the office.

Mr. Kang instructed, "Have him wait for us at the company entrance. I need him to do something."

An hour later—

Assistant Li had never witnessed anything so bizarre.

He was driving in front, his boss in the back, and the new employee sandwiched between them.

The boss hadn't said a word, but the new employee kept rambling:

"No, that's against the rules."

"I can't do that."

"It's not about the money."

"Really, it's not about the money. No matter how much you offer, I can't do it."

"If I were willing to sell myself for money, I wouldn't be so poor that I have to eat expired instant hot pot every day. You have no idea how awful it tastes."

"You can fire me if you want. I'd rather starve or freeze to death outside than do such a thing."

Assistant Li was dumbfounded. Was the new employee an idiot? The boss hadn't even spoken, what was he going on about?

The next second, the new employee demanded he stop the car and stormed out in a huff.

Assistant Li swallowed nervously. "Should we fire him?"

"No, he's my lifesaver!" Mr. Kang stated.

He just wanted this "master" to help him understand what his grandparents were thinking and whether they had anything to do with his parents' car accident years ago.

But the "master" refused outright.

Firing him was out of the question. If he was fired, wouldn't that give him the opportunity to freeload at Yue Qin's place?

Their home was already cramped; one more person would be too much.
