Chapter 96: Chapter 96

No wonder the woods were so big, yet he insisted on coming in this direction.

"Someone's up ahead," Lu Xingchi reported the enemy situation to Bei Nuan.

They didn't walk much further before Bei Nuan heard voices without Lu Xingchi having to say anything. It was the heavy breathing and low groans of a man.

The two exchanged a look and quickened their pace.

Two people were lying on the ground in the woods ahead, and there was a dark figure beside them. Hearing Lu Xingchi and Bei Nuan's approach, it looked up.

It only glanced at them before turning to run.

Without hesitation, Lu Xingchi fired a long nail, aiming straight for the person's thigh.

But for some reason, Lu Xingchi, who never missed a shot, actually missed. The long nail struck the tree trunk, the force causing it to hum. The figure disappeared into the trees.

Lu Xingchi's arrows were like they had an automatic guidance system, impossible to dodge. There was probably only one person in the world who could successfully avoid being shot by him.

That was Huo Ren.

"He ran," Lu Xingchi said.

Bei Nuan couldn't worry about Huo Ren because she had already used the moonlight to clearly see the two people lying on the ground.

One was Anier, who had just made a death flag, saying he was going home to see his daughter. He had been stabbed twice and died with his eyes wide open, not being able to close them.

The other was…

Dad?

It was Dad lying in a pool of blood, his clothes soaked, with large, dark stains spreading.

Bei Nuan was very familiar with this scene.

That day, she was in class when the head teacher suddenly called her out.

The head teacher, in his fifties, was a cold-faced killer, always ruthless. That day, he held Bei Nuan's hand and kept saying, "Don't worry, don't worry…"

It was too late when she arrived at the hospital.

Dad was lying there, just like now, covered in blood.

This scene was deeply buried in her memory, but now it had been unearthed and placed directly in front of her.

Bei Nuan froze. After a moment, she took a deep breath and squatted down.

Bei Nuan was experienced now and knew that the person lying in the pool of blood wasn't her dad. In all likelihood, it was Song Ce transformed into someone else.

Lu Xingchi confirmed her thoughts.

"You saw your dad again? I still see you," he said.

The person on the ground was panting heavily, his chest rising and falling violently. Even in the moonlight, it was clear that he had been stabbed many times.

He was covered in wounds, many of which weren't fatal, looking like he had been tortured.

When Song Ce saw that it was Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi, the illusion faded, revealing his true appearance.

"Huo Ren is really a ruthless person," he sighed weakly, as if talking to himself, and even smiled. "Everyone else sees the face of their loved one, but he doesn't have a loved one at all, just stabbing me over and over."

It really was Huo Ren who had stabbed him.

Lu Xingchi first checked on Anier next to him, feeling his pulse. Anier was already dead.

"What are you doing here?" Bei Nuan squatted down to examine Song Ce's wounds.

Song Ce glanced at the dead Anier beside him. "The Alliance army kept leaving messages for me, wanting to meet me here for a talk, but Huo Ren also came."

Song Ce looked at Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi seriously.

"I'm dying. I need your help with something. I think you're good people. If you're not, there's nothing I can do. I can only take a gamble."

He laughed self-deprecatingly.

"My backpacks are hidden under the bed in the presidential suite on the top floor of the tallest hotel in the city center. Take them to the safe zone and give them to my university professor, Qin Zhiyu."

"There are inhibitors in the bag, consider it a reward, give it to your friend. There are also vaccine and conversion agent information…"

Lu Xingchi interrupted him and asked, "What is a conversion agent?"

Song Ce probably thought he was dying and told them everything he knew. "The conversion agent information is very important. Once it's successfully made, there's hope for your friend to completely turn back into a human from a zombie."

Really?

Bei Nuan looked at Song Ce and couldn't help but glance at Anier lying next to him.

His eyes were open, and his phone had slipped out of his pocket and onto the grass. His little daughter, who slurped her food, would never see her dad again.

"How long has he been dead?" Bei Nuan suddenly asked Song Ce.

Song Ce seemed not to expect Bei Nuan to ask this first and thought for a moment.

"A few minutes, seven or eight minutes? We had just arrived and were about to talk when Huo Ren tried to sneak up on me from behind. He rushed up to fight Huo Ren, but he couldn't beat him and took the knife for me."

This was originally the best time to get information from Song Ce. Those things that Bei Nuan couldn't figure out, such as why the LBD people were chasing him, etc., he would probably tell her now if she asked.

All the questions could be answered.

But there was no time.

If she didn't hurry, Anier's daughter would really never have a father.

Bei Nuan was extremely conflicted, but she quickly recited: Go Against the Current.

The witness wheel appeared, and Bei Nuan chose Song Ce's name without hesitation.

This time, she couldn't choose Lu Xingchi.

Ten minutes ago, Lu Xingchi was still with Bei Nuan in the camp and wouldn't have had time to come and save them.

Song Ce had to save himself.

Xiao San suddenly spoke in her mind.

"Bei Nuan," he said, "After time rewinds, the male lead won't retain this memory. Even if you save someone, you won't get any saintly points."

Bei Nuan ignored him.

"Song Ce," Bei Nuan said to Song Ce, "You won't die, but you promise me, if possible, save Anier too."

Song Ce didn't understand her words at all, looking at her in confusion.

She was looking down, her face was holy, her eyes were clear and pure in the moonlight, full of compassion for the world.

Time rewind.

Light and shadow blurred, everything reversed, and Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi returned to the camp.

Lu Xingchi was putting a solar charger into Bei Nuan's hand, smiling at her and saying, "I'll go with you."

Bei Nuan threw the charger into her space, grabbed Lu Xingchi's hand, and pulled him out.

The two quickly greeted the sentry and rushed into the woods, running all the way to where they had just been.

Lu Xingchi wasn't a witness this time and didn't remember anything. He didn't understand what she was doing, but he didn't say a word and followed her through the woods.

As she ran, Bei Nuan took out Du Ruo's Minghong knife from her space and held it in her hand.

Seeing her take out the Minghong knife, Lu Xingchi immediately realized that the person they were going to deal with was Huo Ren. He became vigilant and stayed close to Bei Nuan.

"Someone's up ahead," he said in a low voice, grabbing Bei Nuan's wrist to stop her from going forward.

Bei Nuan knew that there would be someone ahead.

Ahead was where Anier and Song Ce had just fallen.

Bei Nuan nodded to show that she knew, slowed down, and quietly sneaked over.

A person was standing there: Anier.

Time had passed since he was last ambushed, and he was still alive and well.

Anier was looking around, as if waiting for someone. Bei Nuan knew that he wouldn't be waiting this time.

It seemed that Song Ce hadn't come to see Anier and might have even found a way to lure Huo Ren away.

"Is there anyone else nearby?" Bei Nuan asked Lu Xingchi softly.

If someone had a knife or gun on them and was nearby, Lu Xingchi should be able to sense it.

Lu Xingchi sensed for a moment and said with certainty, "No."

They were all gone.

Huo Ren was always immune to abilities, so it was very likely that he still remembered what had happened before the time rewind.

But remembering was useless because Song Ce was a witness and remembered everything too.

Song Ce had definitely run away.

She wondered if he could successfully shake off Huo Ren.

Bei Nuan wasn't too worried and took Lu Xingchi, the human metal detector, to wander around the nearby woods. After searching for a long time, she confirmed that Song Ce and Huo Ren were indeed gone before putting away the Minghong knife.

Seeing her put away the knife, Lu Xingchi's expression also relaxed.

"Shall we go back?" Lu Xingchi asked.

"We can't go back yet," Bei Nuan said. "We have to go to the city center again."

In case Song Ce hadn't shaken off Huo Ren and something had happened, Song Ce's precious things definitely couldn't fall into Huo Ren's hands.

Lu Xingchi was very useful now, not asking any questions. Without saying a word, he waited for Bei Nuan to take out the SUV, and then he got in with her and drove straight towards the coastal city nearby.

Bei Nuan sat in the car, still feeling strange.

She had really been acting strange lately.

She had just given up such a good opportunity to get the complete story from Song Ce.

Just to save that Anier, rushing to rewind time within ten minutes of his death.

Since a few years ago, Bei Nuan had resolved to live only for herself, and other people's lives and deaths had nothing to do with her.

So what did Anier's life and death have to do with her?

That Anier, whom she didn't even know, wasn't even the same race as Bei Nuan, and couldn't even communicate smoothly.

Maybe she had really done too many saintly missions and was experiencing aftereffects.

The SUV drove all the way to the center of the city. The city center had long been occupied by zombies, especially at night, with the howling of zombies everywhere.

"I don't know which one is the tallest hotel."

Bei Nuan looked out the car window.

Every tall building was dark, and she couldn't even tell which one was a hotel.

"You're looking for the tallest hotel? Simple, we'll check them one by one," Lu Xingchi said.

He really drove Bei Nuan around, looking for all the buildings that looked tall.

Three of them were hotels.

With night vision goggles, it was very convenient even though there were power outages everywhere. It was just that there were no elevators, so they had to climb the stairs to the top floor every time, which was a bit painful.

Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi searched them one by one. When they searched the third one, they cleared out the zombies all the way to the top floor and found traces of someone living in the presidential suite on the top floor.

It was a trace of someone living there after the end of the world began.

Walking into the bedroom, they could see candle wax on the table. The sheets had been changed, obviously not by a hotel worker, casually and not neatly.

Lu Xingchi glanced at it and said, as if talking to himself, "Either living in a mansion or living in a hotel, living quite comfortably."

Bei Nuan hadn't said anything from beginning to end, but he could guess that the person they were looking for was Song Ce.

Well, there was probably no one else who could attract Huo Ren and live in a hotel submerged by zombies.

Bei Nuan said, "Du Ruo isn't afraid of zombies either and can live wherever he wants, but he's still willing to accompany us and live in tents in the open air."

Lu Xingchi curled the corners of his mouth. "He's doing it for the food, right?"

While chatting with him, Bei Nuan lay down to look under the big bed.

There were no big bags of Song Ce under the bed, only a small cardboard box.

Bei Nuan pulled out the cardboard box and opened it with Lu Xingchi.

In the box was a familiar small bottle, with a note pressed underneath.

The handwriting on the note was familiar, the same as the one she had received in the mansion in the US last time.

It said: The last one was already an enhanced version. You can keep this shot and inject it when your eyes turn red.

Below were two words: Thank you.

It seemed that Song Ce had shaken off Huo Ren, returned safely, taken his things, left a note, and left again.

Bei Nuan breathed a big sigh of relief.

He still refused to cooperate with others and insisted on going to the safe zone alone, but at least he was still alive.

It was good that he was alive.

Lu Xingchi glanced at the note, picked up the small bottle, and smiled. "Du Ruo has inventory now."

"Be careful," Bei Nuan quickly took the precious little bottle from his hand and put it safely into her space.

Bei Nuan fell asleep on the way back.

The weather in the coastal city was unpredictable. It started to rain halfway, the raindrops hitting the car window, one after another, especially hypnotic.

Bei Nuan only vaguely remembered that Lu Xingchi woke her up once in the middle of the night to put away the SUV.

Then she fell into an extremely comfortable embrace again, wrapped in something, not getting wet at all. It was hard not to fall asleep.

When she woke up again, she was in her sleeping bag in the tent. It was bright outside, and it seemed to have cleared up.

Du Ruo and the others were all awake, but no one was making noise to disturb her. They were all quietly reading and playing on their phones.

Lu Xingchi was coming in from outside. He saw that Bei Nuan was awake and smiled. "I was just about to call you. Get up, come out and see the rainbow."

There's a rainbow?

Bei Nuan hurriedly put on her coat and ran out.

Outside, the rain had stopped, and the air was cool.

The clouds had dispersed, revealing patches of blue, and a large, brilliant rainbow stretched across the western sky.

Lu Xingchi helped Bei Nuan put on the hastily put-on windbreaker, zipping it up to her nose, and asked, "Are you cold?"

It was already early summer, and even though it had rained all night, it wasn't really cold. Bei Nuan shook her head.

But Lu Xingchi still hugged her from behind.

Okay, making excuses just to hug her.

Bei Nuan snuggled in Lu Xingchi's arms and watched the rainbow with him.

Unfortunately, the rainbow disappeared soon after.

Bei Nuan stayed in his arms, not moving, and opened the taskbar.

The countdown for the time-rewinding "power of God" was about to end, and it was about to reach zero.

Bei Nuan silently recited "Go Against the Current" for the last time, secretly selected his name on the wheel, and confirmed.

The two remained in the same position, and the rainbow reappeared in the sky.

Lu Xingchi wasn't surprised that the disappeared rainbow had returned. He lowered his head and kissed the top of Bei Nuan's head, continuing to hold her quietly.

It was as if they could stay like this until the end of time.

Under the brilliant rainbow, in his arms, Bei Nuan opened the fun little task and pulled the roller handle.

Silently wishing to the rainbow in the sky, hoping to draw a new ability that she liked at such a good time.

The roller spun quickly for a while and slowly stopped on four words: "King of Beasts."

What does this mean?

Can she command birds and beasts?

Bei Nuan imagined herself wearing a crown, sitting on the throne of the King of Beasts, waving her hand, a large group of sparrows soaring into the sky, all the cats putting down their pride and bowing their heads in submission, and the ants on the ground neatly spelling out the eight characters "King Bei Dominates the Little Woods."

It felt pretty good.
