Chapter 9: Chapter 9

Bei Nuan now understood why he looked so clean.

Although Ning City was a small city, with the current traffic conditions, leaving an hour early was barely enough.

And Boss Lu still wanted to take a shower.

Bei Nuan hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should just drag them out of the city.

Because in the original novel, the team didn't manage to escape before the zombies broke through the defenses.

In the original story, everyone was caught off guard by the sudden arrival of the apocalypse. After escaping from S City, they went on a shopping spree in Ning City, stocking up on food and other necessities.

Especially since Lu Xingchi was driving Du Ruo's car at the time - a flashy orange sports car.

The car's chassis was too low, and it wouldn't be able to handle anything but the smoothest roads. They had to switch to an off-road vehicle in Ning City, which wasted a lot of time. By the time they were ready to leave the city, it was too late.

It was precisely because the team didn't make it out of the city in time that they encountered another member of their team while fighting zombies on the road.

This time, Lu Xingchi was well-prepared and fully equipped, unlike in the original plot. They had plenty of time.

Bei Nuan wasn't too surprised. After all, Little Three had said it was a beta version, so anything could happen.

Bei Nuan decided to listen to Lu Xingchi for now and wait and see.

In such chaotic times, the hotel lobby was deserted, with no doormen or security guards in sight.

Only a beautiful receptionist was still at her post, scrolling through viral videos of zombie attacks on her phone, her mind elsewhere.

Seeing Bei Nuan and the others arrive, she put down her phone and gave a strained smile.

After checking in, Bei Nuan asked her, "Aren't you leaving?"

"The manager said that those of us on duty can't leave. We have to wait and see and wait for the head office's notice," the receptionist said, her smile turning into a grimace. "We can't ask for leave either. If we do, we'll lose our bonus for the month."

"What's more important, your bonus or your life?"

Bei Nuan tried to scare her.

"We just came from S City. The zombies are just like in the movies, biting anyone they see. I think there are already some outside the checkpoint. They'll be rushing in any minute now. You're still here working? Can you still get your bonus when you're a zombie?"

The receptionist was persuaded. "My mom has been calling me nonstop, telling me to go back to our hometown. We have a house and land there. It's definitely better than staying in the city."

Bei Nuan agreed. "Then what are you waiting for? Hurry up and go back."

The receptionist asked, "Why aren't you leaving?"

Bei Nuan answered solemnly, "We want to seize the time we have left to enjoy life before the end of the world."

Lu Xingchi had booked the presidential suite on the top floor, so her excuse was quite convincing.

The receptionist looked at Bei Nuan's pretty face, then at the tall and handsome Lu Xingchi and Du Ruo behind her. She pondered the combination of these two men and one woman, and suddenly her face lit up with realization.

"Right, you should seize the time to enjoy life. I wish you three… um… a pleasant time."

The receptionist tossed the mouse aside, grabbed her bag from the cabinet below, and without even changing out of her uniform, she turned and ran, her high heels clicking against the floor.

As expected, accompanied by the fading sound of her high heels, a wave of magical laughter echoed in Bei Nuan's mind.

The little green bar representing her Holy Mother points inched forward a little.

It wasn't much, even with the double bonus from the Holy Mother's Voice, but it was better than nothing.

After checking her points, Bei Nuan turned around to find Lu Xingchi and Du Ruo looking at her with speechless expressions.

"What's wrong?" Bei Nuan asked, bewildered.

"It's nothing," Lu Xingchi and Du Ruo replied in unison.

Suddenly, it dawned on Bei Nuan what was wrong.

Looking at the receptionist's retreating figure, Bei Nuan desperately wanted to grab her back and say, "Wait, what are you thinking? You've got it all wrong!"

It seemed like no one was coming to take them upstairs. Lu Xingchi picked up the room card himself and started walking towards the elevator.

Bei Nuan glanced at the Holy Mother's Voice double bonus timer ticking down in the top right corner.

There were only two minutes left.

It would be a pity to waste the double bonus she had worked so hard to get.

"Wait for me, I'll be right back."

Bei Nuan left them with those words and turned to run towards the entrance.

Outside the hotel's revolving doors, traffic was still heavy, and pedestrians hurried along with serious expressions.

Bei Nuan looked back at Lu Xingchi, who was watching her through the glass door. She glanced at the Holy Mother progress bar above and, taking a deep breath, let out a loud yell.

"Zombies are coming! Everyone, run!!"

After her shout, her Holy Mother points slowly inched forward a little.

Everyone passing by looked at Bei Nuan as if she were crazy.

The scene was incredibly awkward.

But then Bei Nuan reminded herself that these people would soon turn into zombies and wouldn't remember any of this. She immediately felt less embarrassed.

Anything for Holy Mother points.

"Run! The zombies are about to enter the city…"

Before she could finish her sentence, someone grabbed her arm and dragged her back into the hotel lobby like a sack of potatoes.

Lu Xingchi hauled her back and tossed her onto the sofa.

He crossed his arms. "Bei Nuan, what was the first rule?"

"Listen to you, don't make any decisions on my own," Bei Nuan mumbled.

"You remember? Then did you ask me before you went out shouting?" Lu Xingchi's tone was stern.

"I just went out to say a few words, do I have to ask you for permission?" Bei Nuan whispered.

"At a time like this, your shouting and screaming might cause panic and get you arrested for disturbing the peace. You're carrying all our supplies. I'd have to find a way to bail you out. Isn't that just adding to the chaos?"

"Lu Xingchi, don't be so fierce, you'll scare the poor girl."

Du Ruo sat down next to Bei Nuan and gave her a smile.

"I know you want to save everyone you can. But the news is already out there. Those who wanted to run have already run. Some people really can't bear to leave. Where do you expect them to go if they leave their homes? In fact, staying and finding a place to hold up might be a better option."

Lu Xingchi narrowed his eyes at Bei Nuan. "Consider this a warning. If you do this again, you can forget about following us."

As expected, the boss was not happy.

And as Bei Nuan had expected, although he was unhappy, he only gave her a slight reprimand.

After all, a space of nearly a thousand square meters that could keep food fresh was extremely valuable in the apocalypse.

He wouldn't easily kick her out. Lu Xingchi wasn't stupid. So where exactly was Boss Lu's bottom line? Bei Nuan couldn't help but feel a little curious.

The presidential suite was spacious and luxurious, with three bathrooms. Bei Nuan also took a shower and went to the suite's kitchen to boil water.

"What are you doing?" Du Ruo, drying his hair, came over to observe.

"While there's still electricity, I'm boiling more water and storing it."

The boiling water, when placed in the upper level of her timeless space, would still be boiling when taken out, making it quick and convenient to use.

"It's a pity I don't have many pots and bowls that can hold water." Bei Nuan was a little regretful.

"I have an idea," Du Ruo suggested. "You can splash the water upwards and store it in your space while it's in midair. That way you don't need a container."

Bei Nuan rolled her eyes at him. "And then when I take it out, the boiling water will fall and scald me?"

Du Ruo chuckled awkwardly. "It's not impossible if you're careful."

But he did have a point.

There was no need for a container at all. In her timeless space, the water wouldn't spill.

After boiling the water this time, Bei Nuan quickly touched the surface with her finger. As she stored it in her space, she focused on only taking the water, not the pot, and surprisingly, she succeeded.

A blob of hot water, like a crystal clear jelly or a block of ice, maintained the shape it had in the pot.

Apart from her fingertip feeling hot when it touched the water, there were no other problems.

Bei Nuan immediately turned on all the stove burners and soon had a row of hot water blocks lined up in her space.

Come to think of it, couldn't she store cold water in her space without a container too?

Making cold water blocks was even faster, and it didn't take long for Bei Nuan to build an entire wall out of them.

"So what are you doing now?" Du Ruo asked.

Bei Nuan struggled to tear open a package of hot pot seasoning.

"I'm going to make a pot of hot pot and store it in my space while it's boiling. That way, when we want to eat, we can just take it out, and it'll still be boiling. How convenient is that?"

Zombies were about to attack outside, and she was still thinking about how to eat hot pot.

Du Ruo couldn't understand the world of a foodie, but he immediately recognized a kindred spirit.

He stood behind Bei Nuan, watching her add lamb rolls and then fatty beef slices to the pot. He looked a little pitiful. "What if I want to eat now?"

It was definitely too late to eat now.

A bell chime pierced through the glass and reached Bei Nuan's ears. The sound was somewhat muffled by the glass but still clear.

Bei Nuan's heart trembled along with the chime, and she turned to look out the window.

Not far away was the city center clock tower. The last rays of the setting sun swept across the clock face and disappeared.

The seven o'clock bell rang out, one chime after another, punctual as always. The entire city, like a giant ship, slowly sank into darkness.

The bathroom door opened.

Lu Xingchi had finished getting ready and walked out, leisurely buttoning his shirt cuffs.

Looking at his handsome face, Bei Nuan thought to herself, "Lu Xingchi, I'm putting all my hopes on you, the male lead. At a time like this, instead of escaping the city, I'm here in a hotel with you. Don't let me down."

Bei Nuan put the boiling hot pot into her space and looked down from the window.

As expected, a large group of people came rushing from the direction of the S1 highway.

The defenses had been breached.

The zombies ran as fast as living people, making it impossible to tell them apart at a glance.

Du Ruo took a long, black cloth bag out of his backpack. Bei Nuan had noticed it sticking out of his bag earlier.

Du Ruo opened the bag and pulled out a sword.

It was flashy and looked like a cosplay prop.

"What's that?" Bei Nuan leaned closer.

"The Minghong Sword," Du Ruo said solemnly.

"When the Yellow Emperor forged the Xuanyuan Sword in ancient times, the leftover materials automatically formed into the shape of a sword. The Yellow Emperor felt that this sword was too bloodthirsty and wanted to destroy it with the Xuanyuan Sword, but the sword transformed into a bird and flew away."

Bei Nuan was speechless.

This guy's chuunibyou was incurable.

She reached out and touched it. Sure enough, the sword wasn't even sharpened.

Bei Nuan scanned her space and solemnly pulled out a very plain and practical crowbar.

She hefted it in her hand and swung it experimentally in the air.

With a whoosh, she almost flew across the room along with the crowbar.

Du Ruo was speechless.

"It's okay," Du Ruo comforted her. "We have him, after all."

Lu Xingchi was calmly loading long nails into magazines, quickly filling up two boxes.
