Chapter 77: Chapter 77

It really was his younger sister.

Under his soothing touch, Zheng Mo unexpectedly calmed down, not making a sound, only staring wide-eyed at her older brother.

Although infected with the virus, Zheng Mo wasn't the type of zombie that mindlessly bit any living person she saw. She seemed to retain a sliver of sanity.

The private room door suddenly burst open, and several security guards rushed in, guns raised, yelling, "Hands up, everyone!"

Lu Xingchi didn't raise his hands. He merely glanced back at them. The guns in the security guards' hands immediately fired on their own, instantly turning on each other until they all collapsed.

Lu Xingchi said to Captain Zheng, "You take your sister and go. I'll cover you."

Bei Nuan glanced at Lu Xingchi, thinking that the big boss's unhesitating decision to help the siblings was probably due to sympathy for their plight.

Lu Xingchi's calm demeanor and proactive assistance were completely unexpected by Captain Zheng.

Captain Zheng had slaughtered his way through Taiping Gate, causing himself immense trouble. Now, essentially facing a dead end, someone was actually willing to lend a hand, not only helping him find his sister but also helping him escape.

Captain Zheng's usually stern eyes softened slightly.

He thought for a moment and said, "No need. Your skills are far superior to mine. I'll cover you. You two get out. There's a car at the back door. I've already spoken to the guards at the base gate. You can drive straight out."

He released his sister, changed the magazine in his gun, and held one in each hand.

"If I die, please take my sister out with you. It would be better to kill her than to leave her here."

Judging by his appearance, he was determined to die.

The private room door opened again, but this time it wasn't the security guards or soldiers who entered.

It was Huo Ren.

Huo Ren casually carried a gun, a frivolous look on his face. Upon entering, he first waved the gun in his hand and greeted Bei Nuan.

"We meet again."

He smiled. "The car you were in last time didn't follow. I thought you died in Ninth Prison. Didn't expect you to be so lucky."

He paused, then continued, "And then you pretended to be a Saintess and dangled yourself in front of me. Did you really think I was blind?"

Bei Nuan: "…"

So even with the veil and heavy makeup in the tribe, he still recognized her?

His eyesight is really good.

Huo Ren asked with interest, "How did you escape from my bomb? Relying on him?"

He looked Lu Xingchi up and down.

"I understand. A girl, wanting to survive in this kind of place, has to find herself a backer."

Huo Ren pondered for a moment.

"You started by following that scarred man on the boat. He died. You followed me for two days, then didn't keep up. Somehow, you latched onto Jia Han in the tribe. Afraid Jia Han would get jealous, you didn't dare acknowledge me. And then? You've now hooked up with this man?"

Huo Ren glanced at Lu Xingchi.

"Is this guy very powerful? Stronger than me?"

He rambled on. Bei Nuan was a little angry and was about to speak when she heard Lu Xingchi open his mouth.

Lu Xingchi snorted coldly. "Truly, when your mind is filled with shit, everything looks like shit."

Huo Ren wasn't angered. He smiled. "You've been fooled by her little angel face, haven't you? I definitely know better than you what kind of person she is: cold-blooded, ruthless, opportunistic, just like me."

Lu Xingchi replied calmly, "You're wrong. She's not like that. I've never seen anyone more like an angel than her."

Bei Nuan thought, He's praising me as an angel. How lovely.

Actually, Bei Nuan wasn't entirely sure whether she was the kind of person Huo Ren described—cold-blooded and opportunistic.

But Lu Xingchi spoke with such certainty.

He said she was an angel, his tone firm and unwavering.

The most crucial point was that he wasn't an idiot, and he was never fooled by her appearance. He was so intelligent, so accurate in judging people.

For some reason, Bei Nuan's nose felt inexplicably sour.

It was also a little funny.

Huo Ren was utterly dark, while Lu Xingchi was dazzlingly white, yet both firmly believed Bei Nuan was on their side.

The door opened again, and two patrolling soldiers rushed in. Seeing Huo Ren inside, they were startled. "Mr. Huo?"

Huo Ren looked impatient. "I'm just saying a few words. You keep rushing in, rushing in. Is it annoying or not?"

He raised his hand and shot the two soldiers.

The two soldiers died inexplicably and without understanding.

Huo Ren raised his gun again, this time aiming at Captain Zheng.

"I hate it most when there are bystanders listening while I'm talking."

True to his style, he pulled the trigger.

Captain Zheng reacted extremely quickly, also raising his guns.

Several shots rang out.

Regardless of who fired, it was as if Lu Xingchi had fired them all. Every bullet shot went straight for Huo Ren.

However, there was no effect. The bullets passed through Huo Ren, leaving several holes in the wall behind him.

Huo Ren looked at Captain Zheng, who was completely unharmed, with surprise, then looked back at the three bullet holes in the wall behind him.

He swept his gaze over the few people opposite him.

Captain Zheng looked puzzled, clearly also not understanding what had happened.

Zheng Mo was groaning, assuming an attack posture, looking just like a zombie.

Bei Nuan certainly didn't have the ability to control bullets. If she did, she wouldn't have been so scared by the riverside last time.

Huo Ren's gaze fell on Lu Xingchi.

He suddenly said, "No wonder my gun jammed for no reason back in the tribe. Was that you too? How interesting. Can you control other people's guns and bullets?"

He was quite quick to put the pieces together.

Lu Xingchi didn't answer. He raised his hand.

The people in the room witnessed a terrifying scene.

The room was being dismantled.

All the metal objects were peeling, tearing, leaving their original positions.

Except for the weapons on Captain Zheng, everything metallic in the private room, from the large iron cage that had just held Zheng Mo to the keys thrown on the ground, from the metal window frames to the restroom pipes, all flew into the air as if caught in a tornado.

Every object melted and deformed in an instant, turning into sharp weapons that stabbed towards Huo Ren.

Huo Ren's face was full of surprise, but he didn't dodge at all.

He became permeable again.

Although he still seemed to be standing there, the flying objects passed through him, like a hailstorm, clattering against the walls and floor.

This was all within Lu Xingchi's expectations. He stared intently.

The embedded sharp objects flew up again, launching a new round of attacks on Huo Ren.

Bei Nuan knew he was gambling that Huo Ren couldn't maintain this shadow state indefinitely, or that there were gaps and cooldown periods in his ability's activation.

Bei Nuan didn't want to be idle. Knowing that Huo Ren might be immune to her power, she still chanted the spell silently in her heart, staring into Huo Ren's eyes.

"Stop using your ability and just die."

It had no effect.

In that instant, Bei Nuan remembered the bomb still in her space, wondering if a sudden explosion could deal with him.

However, she immediately dismissed the idea. The bomb's timer was about to end. If she really took it out, neither she nor Lu Xingchi would be able to escape in time.

It wasn't worth risking their lives for Huo Ren.

Huo Ren curled his lips, a smile on his face, and walked towards them through the violent tornado of metal.

This time, Bei Nuan could see that he wasn't solid now, nor did he seem to be walking on the ground. It was more like he was floating.

Like a ghost, a shadow.

Bei Nuan watched him, pondering. If he wasn't actually walking but floating, then why didn't he just fly?

Perhaps there were also some limitations to his ability, unfortunately, she didn't know what they were.

Huo Ren walked towards them, still holding his gun.

For some reason, Lu Xingchi hadn't included his gun in the metal tornado earlier.

Huo Ren also looked down at the gun in his hand and laughed.

"Do you think I'm stupid? If I want to shoot, I have to solidify for that instant, giving you a chance to kill me. You can control bullets, so what's the use of a gun?"

Huo Ren casually tossed the gun aside and walked towards Bei Nuan.

The hairs on Bei Nuan's entire body stood on end.

She tried to comfort herself. There's nothing to be afraid of.

If he wanted to attack anyone, he would have to become solid, even if only for a moment, which would be enough for Lu Xingchi to seize the opportunity and kill him.

Now they were at a stalemate. Although they couldn't kill him, he couldn't kill them either.

It was a contest of whose ability could last longer.

While lost in thought, Huo Ren had already reached them.

He suddenly smiled, glanced at Lu Xingchi, and leaned down in front of Bei Nuan, even tilting his head slightly.

It was the posture of someone about to kiss. In front of Lu Xingchi.

This was an outright provocation.

Although he couldn't actually touch Bei Nuan, it looked like he could.

Seeing his face rapidly approaching, Bei Nuan was terrified and retreated in panic. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Lu Xingchi's face turn livid as he reached out to pull Bei Nuan behind him while simultaneously manipulating countless sharp objects to shoot towards Huo Ren.

The metal storm avoided Bei Nuan, passing through Huo Ren, but had no effect.

Bei Nuan's backward movement wasn't as fast as Huo Ren's approach.

In her desperation, Bei Nuan broke free from Lu Xingchi's hand, fumbled for something from her space, and without considering whether it would be useful or not, she swung it at Huo Ren.

It was a knife.

Du Ruo's Minghong Dao, which she had taken out earlier today and placed in the most accessible part of her space.

The knife was made of plastic and wasn't very heavy. Bei Nuan swung it with all her might.

Huo Ren's expression suddenly changed.

At the moment the knife slashed down, Huo Ren seemed to sense something was wrong. He retreated in alarm and raised his hand to block.

The dull blade of the Minghong Dao suddenly flashed with a cold light, and two of Huo Ren's fingers were sliced off.

Fortunately, he retreated in time, otherwise, he would have been cut in half.

He glanced at his fingers, as if he couldn't believe this had happened.

This girl, the girl he thought could only survive by clinging to men, had suddenly produced a knife out of thin air.

And with one slash, she had done what no one else in the world could do: break his ability.

Huo Ren was only stunned for a moment before he rushed towards the wall.

Lu Xingchi had already reacted. He grabbed the Minghong Dao from Bei Nuan's hand and, with all his strength, threw it at Huo Ren's back.

Strangely, the knife Lu Xingchi threw was ineffective, passing through Huo Ren and hitting the wall.

Huo Ren had already passed through the wall.

The knife clattered to the floor.

Lu Xingchi stared at the wall, thinking that the knife could only truly harm Huo Ren when it was in Bei Nuan's hands.

Bei Nuan ran over to pick up the knife, equally astonished.

She was surprised that Du Ruo's cosplay prop knife wasn't actually a cosplay prop knife. How was that possible?

Voices came from outside, as if more people were rushing in.

Captain Zheng, who had just witnessed three non-humans fighting with their abilities and was completely stunned, finally spoke, "Someone's coming. Shall we go?"

Lu Xingchi nodded, and they opened the door, just in time to see a group of armed men rushing up the stairs.

They were probably the ones who had just received the news of the incident at Taiping Gate and rushed over.

Captain Zheng pushed Zheng Mo towards Bei Nuan and stopped, raising his two guns.

Lu Xingchi, however, didn't need anyone to cover him. He raised his hand, and almost instantly, the stairway was sealed by a wall formed from various metal objects.

Captain Zheng was stunned.

"Let's go this way."

He led Lu Xingchi and the others straight to the fire escape at the other end of the corridor.

They went down the fire escape, turned into Taiping Gate's kitchen, and went through the warehouse at the back.

Outside, it was calm and pitch black. This should be the back door Captain Zheng mentioned.

Captain Zheng's seven-seater SUV was indeed parked outside the back door. They jumped into the car and sped away along the small road at the back.

In the distance, they could see that the front gate seemed to be in chaos. Many soldiers had arrived and were directing people to rush in, surrounding Taiping Gate.

Huo Ren was nowhere to be seen. He didn't know where he had escaped to.

Captain Zheng drove quickly away from the lake area, heading back towards the mining area.

Here, everything seemed the same. It was quiet everywhere, everyone was asleep, and there was nothing unusual on the road.

Bei Nuan said, "You go ahead. We still need to go back and pick up our friends."

Captain Zheng replied without hesitation, "I'll take you there."

Captain Lu drove to where Bei Nuan and the others lived, and they all rushed upstairs.

Du Ruo and the others were still awake, playing a board game by candlelight. Seeing Bei Nuan and the others return, they laughed and said, "We thought you were going to play all night. You're back so soon? Was Taiping Gate fun?"

Bei Nuan rushed into the room. "Not fun. Quick, quick, quick, we have to go, we have to escape quickly."

Jiang Fei said nothing, stood up, and went to grab his bag. Du Ruo and Tang Tang also reacted, throwing down their cards and gathering their belongings.

Bei Nuan never left anything outside, storing everything in her space. She had nothing to pack but took one last, reluctant look at the apartment.

This time, they were really leaving.

Lu Xingchi leaned down beside her and said, "Go collect everything. There's time."

"Really?" Bei Nuan's eyes sparkled as she looked at him. Seeing him nod, she quickly rushed inside.

She stretched out her hand, quickly sweeping over the items in the room. Everything her fingers touched instantly disappeared.

Furniture, appliances, including the things inside them, curtains, and the childhood drawings hanging on the wall—everything was taken into Bei Nuan's space.

Bei Nuan was like a highly efficient moving company, instantly emptying the entire apartment.

She wasn't much slower than Du Ruo and the others.

Captain Zheng, having witnessed one strange event after another today, was numb. He calmly asked, "Shall we go?"

Bei Nuan took a deep breath, silently bidding farewell to this strange apartment in her heart, and exited the room, closing the door behind her.

It was time to go.

But it didn't matter. All the things filled with memories of the past, Bei Nuan's home, were now transferred into her space.

Their place was very close to the gate, and the SUV quickly reached the base's entrance.

New survivors had come to seek refuge in the base. It seemed to be a family of five, with elderly people and children. The soldiers guarding the gate were busy distributing daily necessities to them.

Seeing Captain Zheng, a soldier smiled and said, "Captain Zheng, you said you were going out of the city tonight. We've been waiting for you."

The soldier went over and opened the gate.

As the car drove out of the gate, Bei Nuan suddenly remembered something. She leaned out of the car window and threw the key to apartment 602 far out.

"Building 12, Unit 2, Apartment 602, Area 3. We're not staying anymore. We're checking out."

The key arced through the air and landed in the soldier's arms.

The soldier caught it blankly, watching the SUV disappear into the red earth wasteland under the night sky.

The SUV sped forward. The seven-seater was packed full, with Bei Nuan sitting next to Zheng Mo in the back.

Zheng Mo had been very well-behaved since seeing her brother, sitting quietly with her muzzle on, showing no signs of aggression.

Bei Nuan wondered, seeing Zheng Mo in such good condition, if that mysterious person, Song Ce from LBD, had any way to cure her.

Bei Nuan asked Captain Zheng, "So you went to Taiping Gate to save your sister?"

Captain Zheng was silent for a moment before replying, "I didn't think I could save her. I went to avenge her."

It turned out that he and his sister had been separated nearby when the zombie outbreak occurred. After entering the base, he heard news about his sister.

They all said that because Zheng Mo was beautiful, she was chosen to work as a waitress at Taiping Gate. It was said that working there meant never having to worry about food rations.

Captain Zheng found his sister and rushed to her residence, only to discover that she had never returned since going to Taiping Gate.

Later, after inquiring everywhere, the people working at Taiping Gate said that Zheng Mo had become a zombie.

It was no secret in the base that the surnamed Yin who ran Taiping Gate captured beautiful people, infected them with the zombie virus, and used them for entertainment.

Captain Zheng tried various methods but couldn't enter Taiping Gate. Recently, he heard that the wealthy businessman surnamed Yin was offering a reward for someone to go back home and retrieve something, finally giving him an opportunity to enter Taiping Gate.

His sister had already become a zombie. Captain Zheng only wanted to kill and take revenge.

Although he had left himself an escape route, he hadn't expected to be able to retreat safely.

Moreover, Zheng Mo's condition was unusual, different from other zombies, rekindling a spark of hope in the already despairing Captain Zheng.

After leaving the base far behind in the wilderness, out of sight, Lu Xingchi asked Captain Zheng to stop the car so Bei Nuan could retrieve their SUV.

Captain Zheng had been driving east the whole way, the opposite direction from where Lu Xingchi and the others were going.

Lu Xingchi knew that Captain Zheng, with his zombified sister, definitely couldn't follow them to the western safe zone. The safe zone wouldn't accept a zombie.

Captain Zheng said, "We plan to go east, find a remote place to settle down. We might be able to survive."

The man turned to look at his sister. His usually stern and indifferent eyes revealed a hint of tenderness, a glimmer of hope.

Zheng Mo stood obediently, not making a sound. Apart from her red eyes and the muzzle, she didn't look like a zombie at all.

Her gaze met Bei Nuan's, and she suddenly reached out her gloved hand.

Bei Nuan tentatively extended her hand as well, but Zheng Mo suddenly stepped forward and hugged Bei Nuan.

Bei Nuan had never been so close to a zombie before. Her heart instinctively tightened.

Zheng Mo just hugged her gently.

Although she couldn't speak, Bei Nuan knew she was saying goodbye.

Bei Nuan whispered in her ear, "Take care."

Bei Nuan felt that she understood.

The two groups parted ways.

Lu Xingchi watched their SUV drive away, remembering what Skinny had said today.

When Skinny tried to dissuade Lu Xingchi from going to Taiping Gate this afternoon, he had said that in the previous life, Captain Zheng didn't come back alive after slaughtering his way through Taiping Gate.

Captain Zheng had searched all over Taiping Gate before finding his zombified sister, but because he had been delayed for too long, it was too late to leave.

He was trapped inside by the increasing number of base soldiers, outnumbered, and after a bitter fight, he was captured alive.

They didn't kill him, but instead infected him, turning him into a zombie.

After that, he and his sister were locked up together in Taiping Gate, subjected to people's amusement.

No one knew what happened after that.

A few years later, Skinny had already left the base and heard that the zombies in this area had mutated.

A tide of zombies attacked bases everywhere, slaughtering humans. The mutated zombies leading the charge were surprisingly intelligent.

And they were bloodthirsty and incredibly ferocious.

Someone had witnessed it firsthand and said that the male and female leading the zombie horde, the male missing an eye and his right arm, but still recognizable, was Captain Zheng, Zheng Yin.

Lu Xingchi thought that now that he had found his sister and taken her away from the base, hopefully, the siblings would have a new fate.

Lu Xingchi placed his hand on Bei Nuan's head and ruffled her hair. "Let's go. Get in the car."

Bei Nuan obediently climbed into the passenger seat and buckled up.

Suddenly, she heard Little Three's voice in her mind, "Bei Nuan, congratulations, you have completed the hidden Saintess mission 'Save the Blackened Zombie Demon King'."

Bei Nuan: ?
