Chapter 47: Chapter 47

“Silence her?”

“Mm-hmm.” Bei Nuan nodded. “Today, while I was carrying rocks, I heard them talking about a pretty interesting gambling den on the island.”

Having gotten into serious trouble by wandering around today, Bei Nuan tried to justify herself.

“I've never seen a gambling den in my life, so I just wanted to sneak in and take a look. If you were here, you definitely wouldn't let me go, right?”

Lu Xingchi: “…”

Bei Nuan continued, “And then I happened to stumble upon something.”

Bei Nuan recounted everything: sneaking into the back of the gambling den, discovering a hidden zombie house, helpfully locking the zombie cages, getting caught by the Qiu brothers, being dragged out, almost being thrown into the lake, and finally being forced to participate in cage fighting. She told it all in detail.

Lu Xingchi was too formidable, so Bei Nuan only dared to tell a few small lies at the beginning. The rest of the story was detailed and accurate, a perfect recreation of the events.

Lu Xingchi's face turned cold.

He enunciated each word, “Qiu, Zheng, Xun?”

Bei Nuan immediately complained, “Yes, that Qiu Zhengxun! He's been targeting me. If it weren't for his younger brother helping me, he would have killed me already.”

“Silence her.”

Lu Xingchi repeated, but this time it was a statement.

“Exactly.” Bei Nuan smiled. “It seems he set a trap for his brother, but by some strange twist of fate, I stumbled upon it and ruined his plans.”

Bei Nuan had already figured it out.

When she went to feed the zombies jerky, one of the outermost cages wasn't locked.

Not only was it unlocked, but the latch was also half-open, and now that she thought about it, the angle was very deliberate.

If a zombie saw a person and got excited, it would grab the wire mesh and shake the cage door violently.

If the door shook hard enough, the latch would open.

Then, when the cage door opened, whoever was standing closest would be in trouble.

And then the Qiu brothers arrived.

There were no such things as coincidences. If something was too coincidental, it was 99% deliberate.

At first, Bei Nuan thought Qiu Ji had done it.

Qiu Ji seemed much more suspicious than his older brother.

After all, the gambling den was Qiu Ji's territory, the zombies were brought to the island on his orders, and Uncle Shi, who managed the zombies, was one of his men.

From what she overheard, it seemed Qiu Ji wanted to bring his brother to see the zombies.

The book mentioned that the brothers were half-siblings, and the gang was divided into factions. Although Qiu Zhengxun currently controlled the island, many secretly supported Qiu Ji.

If the cage door opened and the zombies bit his brother, the island would fall into Qiu Ji's hands.

But just now, alone in the warehouse, Bei Nuan replayed the scene in her mind over and over and realized that wasn't the case at all.

From beginning to end, Qiu Zhengxun stood far away at the entrance and never approached the zombie cages.

It was Qiu Ji, who, while discussing the newly captured zombies with Uncle Shi, personally walked to the front of the cages.

And now that Bei Nuan thought about it, she realized that Uncle Shi had been a few steps behind Qiu Ji, looking very nervous when he led him to see the zombies.

This Uncle Shi was most likely Qiu Zhengxun's man, planted by Qiu Ji's side.

Later, after the cage fight, Qiu Zhengxun signaled to Uncle Shi, and when Uncle Shi sneaked in at night to kill Bei Nuan, it confirmed her suspicions.

This explained everything.

Qiu Zhengxun instructed Uncle Shi, who managed the zombies, to tamper with the cage, planning to release the zombies and kill his younger brother.

That's why, in the original story, Qiu Ji died after the team arrived on the island.

Unfortunately for them, they ran into Bei Nuan this time, and the plot completely derailed.

Bei Nuan found that the latch on the zombie cage wasn't properly secured and fastened it.

As a result, Qiu Zhengxun's plan completely failed.

When Qiu Zhengxun saw that the cage door was latched and the zombies couldn't get out, no matter how hard they tried, and noticed that the zombies were all pushing in one direction, he guessed that someone had been inside and disrupted his plan.

When Bei Nuan came out, he tried every way to kill her.

Venting his anger was one aspect, but more importantly, he didn't want to leave a witness alive who knew the cage door had been tampered with.

It was a pity that the dignified Boss Qiu couldn’t kill a little girl today, no matter how hard he tried. How pathetic.

Lu Xingchi had also figured out the whole story. His face was grim.

“Alright, we won't leave for now. You stay here,” he said.

He agreed so readily, which surprised Bei Nuan.

Bei Nuan looked up at Lu Xingchi's grim face and thought gleefully: That Qiu Zhengxun, no matter what kind of boss you are or how many men you command, you're about to be in trouble.

Lu Xingchi put his arm around Bei Nuan and escorted her back to the warehouse where she had been locked up.

“Go to sleep. I want to see what tricks they’re going to pull.”

He followed Bei Nuan inside. With a flick of his fingers, the lock clicked shut.

Bei Nuan suddenly realized that he was also planning to stay.

Bei Nuan stammered, “You… you're not leaving? Don't you need to go back and tell Du Ruo and the others?”

“No. I told them to stay where we camped last night and not wander around, to wait for us. With Jiang Fei there, and them wearing A-rank badges, they’ll be fine.”

Lu Xingchi walked to where Bei Nuan had been sleeping, pulled the blanket over, spread it on the floor, and sat down cross-legged.

He propped his elbow on his leg, rested his head on his hand, and tilted his head to study Bei Nuan.

The light from the corridor filtered through the metal gate but didn't reach this corner.

Bei Nuan's eyes adjusted after a while, and she saw that in the darkness, the corners of his eyes were slightly narrowed, his gaze softer than usual, fixed on her.

This made Bei Nuan a little nervous.

“Why are you blushing?” he suddenly asked.

Bei Nuan stood awkwardly across from him and retorted, “I'm not!”

He could see her blushing even in this darkness? Was he that perceptive?

Lu Xingchi smiled and extended a hand towards Bei Nuan.

Even though she couldn't see clearly, Bei Nuan knew that hand was warm and strong, with long, elegant fingers and neat nails, definitely a hand-control enthusiast's dream.

Bei Nuan put her hands behind her back, resisting the urge to touch his.

Seeing that she didn't move, he lowered his voice, making it gentle and magnetic, as if trying to tempt her like Xie Yuanqing. “Come here. Aren't you sleepy? I'll sleep with you.”

Bei Nuan: ?

Sleep with you?

Lu Xingchi smiled and clarified his potentially ambiguous words, speaking slowly, “I mean, I'll be with you, while you sleep.”

Bei Nuan quickly refused, “No, I'm too excited today, not sleepy at all.”

Lu Xingchi curved his lips. “Then come here, you sleep with me,” he paused, then rephrased, “You be with me, while I sleep.”

Bei Nuan was speechless. “How about… neither of us sleeps?”

His constant talk of sleeping was starting to sound strange.

Lu Xingchi nodded slightly. “Okay, we won't sleep. Then if we don't sleep, what should we do?”

Bei Nuan: “…”

This topic was going nowhere.

Unable to persuade her, Lu Xingchi leaned forward, grabbed her arm, and gently tugged.

Like a bird caught by a cat's paw, Bei Nuan stumbled into his arms.

“Why are you standing so far away?”

Lu Xingchi held her, embraced her, and cherished the moment before letting go.

Like a large animal handling a small pet, he easily flipped her over and adjusted her position so that she was lying on the blanket with her head resting on his lap.

“Sleep. Didn't we spend a night alone together in Cell Block 9 last time?”

He was right.

But their relationship back then in Cell Block 9 was different, more distant and less… ambiguous than now.

“I remember that night, with me there, you seemed to sleep very soundly.” Lu Xingchi chuckled. “I heard you snoring just a minute after you lay down.”

Huh?

Snoring?

Bei Nuan was instantly mortified. “I snored that night? Really?”

Lu Xingchi looked down at her embarrassed expression and explained, “Just a little, very softly. Besides, you were busy all day and extremely tired. It's normal to snore if you're in an awkward sleeping position.”

Bei Nuan still felt a little awkward. “What about usually? You often sleep not far from me. I haven't snored, have I? Have I?”

Lu Xingchi shook his head firmly. “No. Never heard it.”

Bei Nuan was finally a little relieved.

Lu Xingchi couldn't help but ruffle her hair. “Don't worry about it. You're cute even when you snore, like a little kitten.”

Bei Nuan was embarrassed.

“Actually, I have a pillow, a quilt, and a sleeping bag. We don't have to sleep like this.”

Bei Nuan struggled to get out of his embrace, but his arms held her firmly. His strength was on a completely different level.

Lu Xingchi refused. “It's too much trouble to put them away if someone comes in.”

Bei Nuan continued to wriggle like a worm in his arms, trying to escape his grip. “But we don't have to be like this. It's not cold.”

Lu Xingchi's eyebrows furrowed. “Be good and sleep. Don't move.”

His voice was full of warning.

“If you move again, I might not be able to resist, and I’ll want to fulfill my second wish right now.”

Bei Nuan's face instantly flushed, and she stopped struggling.

Lu Xingchi suddenly released his hold on Bei Nuan and said, “Forget it, you should move. Let's do it now, okay?”

Bei Nuan immediately became obedient. Without his restraint, she didn't move a muscle and quickly closed her eyes.

Lying in his arms like this, pillowing her head on his leg, the warmth from his leg radiating against the back of her neck, it was quite comfortable.

He seemed to chuckle softly and say something else, but drowsiness weighed heavily on Bei Nuan, and she couldn't hear it anymore.

After an unknown amount of time, noisy voices came from outside.

Bei Nuan woke up with a start and found herself still in Lu Xingchi's arms.

He was awake, listening to the sounds outside.

It seemed like a lot of people had arrived.

The corridor lights flickered through the metal gate, illuminating moving shadows outside.

Bei Nuan sat up abruptly.

“Quick, quick, you need to hide,” Bei Nuan whispered urgently.

“What are you so anxious about?” Lu Xingchi said casually. “They've been here for a while. Someone discovered the zombies that escaped from across the hall and they’re trying to figure out how to deal with it. But they haven't thought about you being here yet.”

He was relaxed and unhurried.

The escaped zombies and Uncle Shi were locked in the opposite room, but the key was on Uncle Shi. They had to find the spare key to open the door.

Uncle Shi seemed to hold a significant position in the gambling den, so even as a zombie, probably no one would dare to shoot him directly.

With something like this happening, they would probably notify Qiu Ji first.

“I think they’ll be here soon. You need to hide!” Bei Nuan urged.

Lu Xingchi laughed, studying her anxious little face, and suddenly said, “Kiss me, and I’ll hide.”

Bei Nuan: “…”

At a time like this, all he could think about was this.

The noise outside grew louder and more chaotic.

Lu Xingchi sat calmly, unmoving.

When the big boss suddenly became willful, no one could do anything about it.

Bei Nuan had no choice but to bargain with him, “I can kiss you, but does this count as your second wish?”

“Fine, it counts. I’ll let you off the hook this time.” Lu Xingchi said, then added, “However, you have to kiss me actively. It doesn't count if it's not proactive.”

“How proactive?” Bei Nuan hesitated.

Lu Xingchi's voice became husky. “However I’m usually proactive with you, you do the same to me.”

Another wave of noise erupted outside, and the flickering lights intensified. Bei Nuan seemed to hear Qiu Ji's voice; he was coming with his men.

Bei Nuan steeled herself, put her arms around his neck, and leaned in to kiss his lips.

Lu Xingchi paused, his breathing seeming unsteady.

He didn't make things difficult for her at all, obediently parting his lips slightly.

Outside the metal gate, footsteps shuffled and voices clamored. Inside, hidden from their view in a dark corner, the two were doing something completely out of sync with their surroundings.

It felt like a secret rendezvous.

The people outside could come in at any moment, and Bei Nuan's heart raced.

She didn't know if it was because of the danger or because of the kiss.

He was the same as always, fresh, warm, with soft lips. Today, there was less aggression and more docility.

But she was shorter than him, which made things difficult.

Bei Nuan couldn't quite reach him, feeling awkward and a little anxious. A classic CEO line inexplicably popped into her head: You started the fire, you put it out.

Bei Nuan simply knelt down, straddled his legs, pressed the back of his head firmly, and leaned down to kiss him.

Just like he always did.

Perhaps because of her new position, Lu Xingchi chuckled softly, reached up to hold her waist, and placed his other hand behind him to maintain their balance.

He was completely different than usual.

He adopted a docile and submissive posture, tilting his head back slightly, his jaw raised, revealing the lines of his throat, his eyelashes half-lowered, the corners of his long eyes misty.

It was a breathtaking beauty that even the darkness couldn't conceal.

He wasn't proactive at all, letting her have her way.

Yet, in the lingering aftertaste of her dominance, there was a hint of entanglement and longing, making her want to retreat and then plunder anew.

In a daze, Bei Nuan seemed to hear two gunshots.

But the gunshots were incredibly distant, as if they had nothing to do with them.

After an unknown amount of time, Bei Nuan suddenly felt his responsive kiss. He kissed her lingeringly for a moment before whispering huskily, “They’re coming in.”

His voice was still tender.

Bei Nuan snapped back to reality and let go of him.

A jangle of keys followed, and someone was unlocking the door.

The languid, passive, and accommodating man from a moment ago was gone. Lu Xingchi's movements were like a large cat's, quiet and agile, as he stood and quickly disappeared behind a pile of furniture and clutter.

The door creaked open.

The first thing the people outside saw was Bei Nuan, wrapped in a blanket, getting up from the floor in the dark corner.

Her voice was drowsy. “What’s going on? It’s so noisy outside.”

Several people entered the warehouse, led by Qiu Ji.

It was normal for him to be here; after all, he was the owner of the gambling den. But Qiu Zhengxun was also there. It was just a small matter of a casino employee being bitten by a zombie, yet it actually required Boss Qiu’s presence.

Qiu Zhengxun had a stern expression, his face very unpleasant.

He knew perfectly well that Uncle Shi had been bitten while trying to kill Bei Nuan, and this matter was definitely related to her.

However, in front of Qiu Ji, he had to swallow his words.

The more complex his expression, the happier Bei Nuan became.

Qiu Zhengxun frowned and stared at Bei Nuan. “I think it might be related to her. If we had just thrown her into the lake, nothing would have happened.”

Qiu Ji immediately objected, “Brother, she was locked up here, all the doors were locked, even the key was on Uncle Shi himself, and the spare key was with me. How could this be related to her? She’s not a god.”

His words were reasonable and irrefutable.

Qiu Zhengxun turned to his brother. “I know you think she’s pretty and can’t bear to hurt her, but there are plenty of pretty girls. If you like this type, I’ll have people find more for you.”

Qiu Zhengxun glanced at Bei Nuan again. “This one won’t do. From the first moment I saw her, I knew that despite her looks, she’s trouble.”

Bei Nuan silently gave him a thumbs-up in her mind: As expected of Boss Qiu, truly discerning.

Qiu Ji ignored this and asked Qiu Zhengxun seriously, “Brother, what will it take for you to let her go?”

He could also see Qiu Zhengxun's determination to kill her.

Qiu Zhengxun stared at his brother for a long moment.

Finally, he said, “Hasn’t the cage fighting added a new game these days? If she can pass three times, I’ll believe that even heaven doesn’t want her to die.”

Bei Nuan was startled.

She had already killed a zombie yesterday, and now she had to kill more?

Were they showing off how many zombies they had, that they were inexhaustible?

Besides, this new game didn't sound good. Could it be biting zombies with her mouth?

Qiu Ji's expression also changed. “That game… it's already impressive if someone can pass once. Brother, you’re saying she has to pass three times?”

As he was speaking, the open metal gate behind them suddenly moved slightly, the hinges making a soft creaking sound.

They were in a cave; there was no wind. Even if there was, it couldn't move such a heavy metal gate.

Everyone glanced at the door, but no one could figure out what was going on, and no one took it too seriously.

But Bei Nuan understood.

Big Boss Lu seemed to be speaking through the door.

He was saying: What are you afraid of?

Bei Nuan couldn’t help but smile and asked, “Do you mean what you say? If I can pass three times in a row, you’ll let me go?”

Qiu Ji was taken aback and advised Bei Nuan, “I suggest you don’t. Because this time, it’s not just about holding the gun steady to win. It’s not that simple. Your opponent isn’t really the zombies, it’s the people. People are much more terrifying than zombies.”

With Lu Xingchi around, she wasn't afraid of people, let alone ghosts.

Bei Nuan said firmly, “It’s okay, I want to try.”

Even Qiu Zhengxun looked at Bei Nuan again and readily agreed, “Fine, as long as you pass three times in a row, I’ll let you go.”

Looking at his expression, Bei Nuan knew that he thought she was definitely going to die this time.

Bei Nuan thought to herself: Heh. It’s not certain who will die.
