Chapter 28: Chapter 28

Bei Nuan glanced at the new target, Jiang Fei.

There was a kitchen behind the small dining area. Jiang Fei was busy inside and, noticing Bei Nuan looking over, gave her a gentle smile.

With water and electricity available, everything was convenient.

Jiang Fei was restless. As soon as he finished eating, he asked Bei Nuan to take out a lot of ingredients from her space and was busily processing them.

Washing what needed to be washed, chopping what needed to be chopped, he processed everything into semi-finished products and stored them in the upper level of Bei Nuan's space for later use on the road. This would be much more convenient.

At some point, he had quietly taken over the team's cooking duties from Bei Nuan, saving her a lot of effort.

Most importantly, he was a skilled cook, and his dishes were truly delicious.

Since he was the target of the Saintly Light today, Bei Nuan naturally had to stay close to him. Maybe she would find an opportunity to increase her Saintly Points.

Bei Nuan ran to the kitchen and offered to help him wash vegetables for a while. She also boiled a lot of water and stored a large row of cold and hot water cubes in her space.

When Lu Xingchi came out of the shower, he saw Bei Nuan and Jiang Fei busy together in the kitchen.

Both of them were attractive, bathed in the sunlight streaming in through the kitchen window. The scene was as beautiful as a comic, even Lu Xingchi was momentarily stunned.

Jiang Fei was smiling, looking down and talking to Bei Nuan. "For the braised eggplant, do you prefer it cut into strips or chunks?"

Bei Nuan leaned against his arm and looked. "Can it be cut into even smaller dice?"

"No problem." Jiang Fei spun the kitchen knife in his hand like a dagger, then swiftly chopped with lightning speed.

The diced eggplant was perfectly even, as if measured with a ruler.

Bei Nuan was both surprised and envious. "Jiang Fei, how are you so skilled?"

Lu Xingchi stood silently for a moment, then turned and entered the kitchen.

He walked to Bei Nuan's side, placed his hand on her head, and softened his voice. "I'm done showering. Do you want to go wash up?"

Bei Nuan was reluctant to leave, watching Jiang Fei skillfully wield the knife.

Lu Xingchi's hand slid down, touching her soft hair, which resembled a small animal's tail. He tilted his head and looked closely. "It seems like it's time for a wash."

Ah? Really?

Bei Nuan quickly grabbed her hair to examine it and, without a second's delay, dashed off.

Bei Nuan took a thorough shower and used two types of conditioner before emerging, smelling fragrant.

As she walked, she muttered, "It would be great if we had a hairdryer."

In this weather, having wet hair after washing was a bit chilly.

Lu Xingchi came over and helped her rub the towel on her head. "Want to go out with me?"

"What for?" Bei Nuan was curious. With zombies everywhere, what could be fun?

"I'll take you out for a stroll," Lu Xingchi said.

Bei Nuan glanced at the countdown timer for the Saintly Light mission and was a little tempted.

There were still more than ten hours left, and there didn't seem to be any opportunity to increase her Saintly Points right now. A stroll wouldn't hurt.

"Okay," Bei Nuan agreed.

Du Ruo immediately looked up from his mobile game, his fingers still tapping furiously, his eyes glued to the screen. "No matter what you guys are going to do, I want to go too. I'm bored to death."

Lu Xingchi didn't say anything.

Du Ruo finally looked up from his phone screen, saw Lu Xingchi's expression, and suddenly understood. He changed his tune, "Forget it, you two go ahead."

The atmosphere suddenly became awkward.

Bei Nuan felt a little embarrassed and reached out to pull Du Ruo. "Stop playing games. Let's go for a walk together."

With all three of them sneaking out, only Jiang Fei would be left to work.

Jiang Fei didn't object; instead, he asked Bei Nuan for more ingredients.

"You guys go. I just don't want to move and want to rest more."

He said he wanted to rest, but the countertop in front of him was filled with countless unprocessed chicken, duck, fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables. Bei Nuan immediately felt a little guilty.

"Forget it, I won't go. I'll stay and help you…"

Before she could finish, Lu Xingchi took her hand.

"Let him stay and have a good rest. We'll bring him back some good food and interesting things."

Tang Tang also came over and rolled up his sleeves with a smile. "You guys go. I'll help Brother Jiang Fei wash the vegetables."

Just as Bei Nuan was about to leave, Jiang Fei smiled at her again and added, "Come back quickly. I'll worry if you're gone too long. Be careful and stay safe."

He spoke as if Bei Nuan was going to venture into a horde of zombies alone, and the murderous Lu Xingchi beside her didn't exist.

Lu Xingchi glanced at him impassively and pulled Bei Nuan away.

Outside the Shuida University, Lu Xingchi drove the SUV, recklessly heading towards the city center of Shuicheng.

Attracting countless zombies along the way, then shaking them off, Lu Xingchi drove aggressively, weaving left and right, completely unconcerned.

"Could you slow down a bit?" Bei Nuan suggested softly.

Lu Xingchi glanced at her. "With me here, I'm responsible for your safety. What are you afraid of?"

Bei Nuan wanted to laugh: He was still annoyed by Jiang Fei's earlier words.

Lu Xingchi drove directly into the parking lot of a large building, jumped out of the car, and easily dealt with the group of zombies they had just attracted.

He killed them even faster and more efficiently than usual.

Lu Xingchi took Bei Nuan and Du Ruo upstairs to a nice department store.

It was very spacious. A huge crystal chandelier hung in the atrium next to a giant poster for a spring sales promotion. Because the lights were on, it looked no different from usual, except for the almost complete absence of people.

Perhaps because the zombie outbreak here occurred in the morning before the store opened, only a few early-arriving employees were present, and Lu Xingchi easily dealt with them.

"You wanted a hairdryer?" Lu Xingchi asked.

So he had come all this way for this.

Bei Nuan had only mentioned it casually and was a little touched.

Du Ruo had already carefully studied the floor directory. "Small appliances are on the top floor."

And indeed, they were. Bei Nuan took all the hairdryers out of the display case, compared them, and chose the one that claimed to have negative ions and was the prettiest shade of pink, putting it into her space.

Lu Xingchi handed her several identical ones. "Have a few spares."

Du Ruo muttered beside them, "They'll be useless after we leave here. There's no electricity."

Lu Xingchi said calmly, "We'll go to the hardware and machinery section later and see if there are any portable generators."

"So we'll have electricity?" Bei Nuan immediately cheered and quickly picked out the hair straightener and electric toothbrush she had been eyeing, then ran to the side to find a rice cooker.

Du Ruo watched her line up the rice cookers, puzzled. "Isn't it just a pot for cooking rice? Is there a difference?"

Bei Nuan gave him a disdainful look. "Of course there is. If you don't believe me, go back and ask Jiang Fei. The taste of rice cooked with different temperature control programs is very different."

After Bei Nuan chose her favorite rice cooker, she also collected a bunch of strange small appliances that Du Ruo didn't understand at all.

Du Ruo picked up a flat pan. "What's this?"

"A griddle."

"And this? Is it a kettle?" Du Ruo picked up a bucket-like appliance.

"It's a blender."

Bei Nuan snatched it back from him. "You don't need to worry about it. Jiang Fei will definitely recognize them all. He's in charge of using them; you're just in charge of eating."

Du Ruo agreed wholeheartedly and tossed the griddle aside to play with something else.

Lu Xingchi picked up the griddle, looked at it, and suddenly said, "Actually, my cooking skills are pretty good too."

Bei Nuan raised an eyebrow, not believing a word.

Lu Xingchi, who had always lived a pampered life, probably hadn't even fried an egg himself. Cooking skills? Don't be ridiculous.

Large appliances were right next to them. Bei Nuan longingly touched a small washing machine.

"If you want it, take it," Lu Xingchi said.

Since he said it was okay, Bei Nuan unceremoniously put them all away.

As she was putting them away, she said, "Jiang Fei was saying last time that if we had electricity, we could use a washing machine. After all, we have water."

Lu Xingchi didn't speak for a long time.

After a while, he finally said faintly, "‘Jiang Fei’ ‘Jiang Fei.’ If he sneezed every time his name was mentioned, Jiang Fei would think he had a cold by now."

Lu Xingchi went downstairs to the menswear section and picked out a pile of clothes for himself.

After getting his own, Lu Xingchi instructed Du Ruo, "Get a few for Jiang Fei too."

Bei Nuan caught him. "See, you mentioned Jiang Fei again."

She wanted to laugh: He was so actively picking out clothes for Jiang Fei, probably because he couldn't stand Jiang Fei wearing his shirts anymore.

Jiang Fei seemed quite comfortable wearing Lu Xingchi's shirts these days. Bei Nuan took out a large stack of shirts in various colors and studied them one by one.

"I wonder what color Jiang Fei likes?"

Du Ruo answered smoothly, "He said he likes white."

Lu Xingchi: "…"

Lu Xingchi stepped forward, pulled out a light mint green shirt from the pile, and handed it to Bei Nuan.

The color was quite refreshing.

Bei Nuan held it up and examined it. "This color? I wonder if he'll like it."

"Trust me," Lu Xingchi said calmly, "This color will definitely suit him."

He didn't forget to add another jab, "His shirts should be two sizes smaller than mine, right?"

After Lu Xingchi chose his clothes, he patiently waited for Bei Nuan to pick out clothes and cosmetics before saying, "I still need to go to the basement level."

The basement level had a large bookstore area.

With the development of the internet, the sales of paper books had been declining day by day. Now that there was no internet, paper books suddenly seemed more appealing.

They felt heavy in the hand, and flipping through them released the scent of fresh ink.

Lu Xingchi and Du Ruo each found stacks and stacks of books and handed them to Bei Nuan to store.

"Let's get a few for Jiang Fei too," Du Ruo mused. "What kind of books do you think he'd like to read?"

Lu Xingchi casually pulled a book from the shelf and tossed it to Du Ruo.

Du Ruo caught it and glanced at it.

The cover had a large title: "The Processing and Appreciation of Green Tea."

"Why give him this? He's not a tea seller." Du Ruo put the book back on the shelf and picked out a large stack of mystery and suspense novels for Jiang Fei and Tang Tang.

Bei Nuan's sharp eyes noticed Lu Xingchi walking to a bookshelf, browsing for a moment, and discreetly slipping two or three books into his bag.

There were no shop assistants here, yet he was acting secretive, as if he were stealing.

What kind of books was Boss Lu stealing so mysteriously?

When he moved to the next bookshelf, Bei Nuan quietly snuck over and took a peek.

"Delicious Cooking for Beginners," "Easy Delicious Dinners," "Learning Home Cooking from Famous Chefs."

Bei Nuan bit her lip hard to prevent herself from laughing.

Bei Nuan saw through him but didn't say anything, following him back to the car.

Lu Xingchi drove out of the parking garage, took another detour, and finally found a large home improvement and building materials store. They actually found a small portable generator.

The generator ran on gasoline.

Passing by a gas station on their way back, Lu Xingchi got out of the car to fill up the tank. He then asked Bei Nuan for a few jerry cans and filled them all up.

"We'll try to fill up whenever we pass a gas station," Lu Xingchi said.

Now that both the car and the generator needed gasoline, the more, the better.

Bei Nuan walked around the gas station, examining it.

After Lu Xingchi finished refueling, the three of them got back into the car. Just as he started the engine, Bei Nuan suddenly said, "Wait."

She opened the car door, jumped out, and ran to the gas pump, grabbing the nozzle.

There was a rumbling sound like a thunderclap.

Lu Xingchi quickly jumped out of the car and rushed over, only to see Bei Nuan standing there perfectly fine, blinking her eyes.

The entire gas pump and nozzle were gone, replaced by a huge pit in the ground.

Her gaze was unfocused, as if she was pondering something in her mind. Then she asked a strange question.

"Something as tall as two people, as long as four or five people, a big, dark thing, like a giant lying capsule, connected to the meter and the nozzle above… Is that the fuel storage tank?"

Lu Xingchi: "…"

She had actually put the gas pump, meter, and the underground storage tank into her space.

Lu Xingchi gritted his teeth.

She was incredibly audacious.

Bei Nuan, however, was quite pleased. "I just tried it randomly, and it actually worked! We have gasoline now, a huge, huge tank of it!"

It was indeed huge. It was the entire gas station's supply of 97 octane gasoline.

Du Ruo came over, completely dumbfounded by Bei Nuan.

"You took a whole gas station? You usually cook in your space. Doesn't your space explode?"

"Silly," Bei Nuan replied. "Of course I put it in the upper level where time doesn't flow. I'll take it out when we need to refuel."

Other people refueled by taking out a jerry can; she refueled by taking out a gas station. Alright then.

Back in the car, Du Ruo was still puzzled. "So why did we take a gas station again?"

Then he answered his own question, "Oh, right, because Bei Nuan wanted a hairdryer to dry her hair."

To dry her hair, they needed electricity; to have electricity, they needed a generator; to use a generator, they needed gasoline; to have gasoline, they needed to take a gas station.

The logic was sound, no problem.

The warm midday sun shone over Shuicheng. Despite the apocalypse, there was a rare sense of peace and tranquility. Even the zombies wandering outside seemed languid under the sun.

The Shuida University cafeteria had already started serving lunch. Song Xiwang was on duty at the entrance today.

Someone called him over for lunch.

"No need, you guys eat first. I'll come over after you're done," Song Xiwang replied, turning his head.

When he turned back, he was startled to see a large truck parked directly outside the cafeteria's iron gate, its rear end facing the entrance.

It was there silently, as if it had fallen from the sky, with no indication of when it had arrived.

Bei Nuan and the others quietly emerged from behind the truck.

Bei Nuan gestured for him to open the gate. "We passed by a supermarket and brought you back some things. Come and help unload."

The truck's door opened, and Song Xiwang was stunned.

This wasn't just "some things."

It was a truckload of supplies, both food and other necessities, box after box piled high.

Song Xiwang and a group of boys quickly came out and quietly and efficiently unloaded the supplies with Lu Xingchi and the others.

While they were busy unloading, Bei Nuan hurried upstairs.

Jiang Fei had already processed all the ingredients and neatly arranged them on the counter, waiting for Bei Nuan to store them.

Seeing Bei Nuan return, Jiang Fei smiled at her first. "Where did you go to play?"

"We went shopping and brought back a lot of things." Bei Nuan didn't have time to chat with him and grabbed his sleeve. "Come on, let's go downstairs and take a look."

Jiang Fei didn't quite understand why she insisted on dragging him to watch the commotion, but he obediently followed her downstairs.

Downstairs, they saw the Shuida University students gathered around the mountain of supplies.

All kinds of things, everything they could need.

Jiang Fei smiled and asked, "Did you bring all this back? So much?"

"Yes," Bei Nuan explained. "We passed by a supermarket on our way back. It was full of zombies, and no one had been inside yet. Lu Xingchi cleared the supermarket and brought back a lot of supplies, which we can give to them."

After Bei Nuan gave Jiang Fei a full report, she quickly checked her Saintly Points.

Her Saintly Points had indeed increased quite a bit.

Showing off her saintly deeds in front of Jiang Fei today doubled all the points. It was extremely satisfying.

Du Ruo came over and whispered to Jiang Fei, "You know, Bei Nuan put a whole gas station in her space just so she could dry her hair."

"You have to be careful with that." Jiang Fei smiled at Bei Nuan. "I used to work at a gas station. If you have any questions, you can ask me."

Bei Nuan, who was unsure about the giant fuel storage tank, lit up.

"Really? I was just looking for someone to ask. The storage tank has to be placed upright, right?"

"I think so, because there's a valve on top for venting," Jiang Fei replied with a smile.

Bei Nuan frowned. "This thing should be buried in a deep pit underground. If we take it out and use it directly, and if it has to be upright, the nozzle will be at the very top. How are we going to refuel?"

Jiang Fei thought for a moment. "You can have Lu Xingchi make a steel ramp for you. When you refuel, just drive the car up…"

The two of them began to discuss animatedly.

Lu Xingchi was helping Song Xiwang and the others sort through the supplies they had brought back when he suddenly realized Bei Nuan was gone.

A moment later, she reappeared, excitedly pulling Jiang Fei along.

Lu Xingchi stared at her hand gripping Jiang Fei's sleeve.

She had been like this a few days ago, occasionally tugging at Lu Xingchi's clothes, pulling his sleeves, poking him, and looking up at him while talking.

Since the zombie outbreak, from the very beginning, she had insisted on following him.

To follow him, she had spared no effort.

She used all sorts of coquettish and cute tactics, even hugging him with teary eyes, kissing him once, and hiding in his sleeping bag all the way.

Two days ago, she had even said, "I want to follow you every step of the way."

She was like a little stray cat encountered on the road, determined to follow him home after he casually fed her a piece of ham.

Constantly circling around his feet, meowing, refusing to leave him for a moment.

These past few days, Lu Xingchi had taken this for granted.

But she had changed in the blink of an eye, suddenly running off to grab someone else's clothes and sharing any exciting news with that person first.

This little liar.

She was looking up at Jiang Fei, her eyes bright, a smile on her face, as if Jiang Fei was the only person in her eyes.

It felt as if a hand was twisting and squeezing Lu Xingchi's heart.

Since this morning, she had been hovering around Jiang Fei.

He had finally managed to take her out for a stroll, and the moment they returned, not even a minute later, she had run off to find him again.

Lu Xingchi's throat felt uncomfortable. He undid a button on his collar, feeling puzzled: In this kind of world, if she wanted to find someone to protect her, shouldn't she choose him, Lu Xingchi?

Lu Xingchi silently compared himself to Jiang Fei.

In terms of physique, combat skills, abilities, and even appearance, Lu Xingchi felt he was superior in every aspect.

Could it be because he was more eloquent and… more cunning?

Although Bei Nuan was clueless, she couldn't be that clueless.

Or maybe it was because she thought his cooking was delicious.

That little foodie, it was indeed a possibility. For a little stray cat, being fed was quite important.

Lu Xingchi subconsciously touched the backpack containing the cookbooks.

He faintly heard Bei Nuan asking Jiang Fei, "What delicious food are we having for lunch? Braised eggplant?"

Jiang Fei gently asked, "How about I make you braised lion's head for lunch?"

"Lion's head? Great!" Bei Nuan cheered and spun around.

See, Lu Xingchi thought, it really was like that.
