Chapter 21: Chapter 21

Huo Ren turned and left first.

Bei Nuan looked back at the river. Although the rain had stopped, the river was still covered in a white mist, making it impossible to see the other side.

Lu Xingchi and the others were on an old wooden boat that needed to be rowed. It was much slower than a motorboat and was completely out of sight.

Bei Nuan touched the metal button hidden in her pocket.

The fine lines of the button imprinted on Bei Nuan's fingertips, and Lu Xingchi's calm eyes seemed to be right in front of her.

Bei Nuan calmed herself.

Huo Ren and the others left the dock and walked towards the road on the shore. Their SUV was left on the other side of the river, and they were probably trying to find a car on the road.

Bei Nuan deliberately slowed down, falling behind with the yellow-haired man guarding her.

There was a bag of rice in her space. It had been opened when she made Hainanese chicken rice last time, and Bei Nuan had secretly grabbed a handful of rice.

She scattered it as she walked.

Just now on the boat, Bei Nuan had already put a large handful of rice in front of the motor at the stern.

After Lu Xingchi came over, he would definitely check the boat left at the dock first. If he saw the rice, he should understand that he needed to follow the rice trail.

She just hoped that he would discover the rice faster than ants could carry it home.

This side of the river was also a desolate and chaotic scene.

Looking into the distance, a few moving things occasionally appeared on the road, all zombies, no living people. It seemed that although the bridge across the river had been blown up, this side of the river had not been spared.

Then Bei Nuan discovered that not only Huo Ren, but everyone in this group had a gun.

When zombies saw them, they roared and rushed over, only to be dealt with by them with a single shot and laughter.

The guns were equipped with silencers. Although there was still some sound, it wasn't very loud, probably because they were afraid of disturbing the horde.

This group of people was clearly prepared, dealing with zombies cleanly and efficiently, with good marksmanship. It was unclear what their background was.

This immediately dispelled Bei Nuan's idea of escaping.

For now, she could only diligently scatter rice to feed the ants.

There were indeed car accidents and abandoned cars on the road, and many car doors were wide open. The car owners must have met with misfortune.

This group found a car that could be driven. They first respectfully sent Huo Ren into the car, letting him take Xiao Hei and a few others away.

Bei Nuan and the others walked a little further and finally found a car.

Without a word, Bei Nuan took the initiative to climb into the back seat, far from the driver's seat.

The first thing she did after getting in the car was to roll down the window to let in fresh air.

The car started, driving along the road with a clear destination, though she didn't know where they were going.

The scenery on both sides whizzed by. The car was driving very fast. At this speed, scattering rice from the car would be useless; it would have flown who knows where.

Bei Nuan stealthily took out an egg.

Casually resting her hand outside the car window, close to the car door, Bei Nuan glanced at the driver and quietly let go while he was looking elsewhere.

The egg smashed onto the road with a splat, splashing egg white and yolk everywhere.

Raw eggs break on impact and don't roll around, making them ideal markers.

No one would be throwing eggs on the road at a time like this. Lu Xingchi would definitely notice such an unusual thing.

There were still quite a few eggs in her space, enough to last for a while.

Bei Nuan carefully threw the eggs, for fear of being noticed.

"Hey, you…"

The person next to her suddenly spoke, startling Bei Nuan. She turned her head.

There were three people squeezed into the back seat. Sitting next to Bei Nuan was the only girl in the group. She took out a bag of biscuits from her bag, opened it, and offered it to Bei Nuan.

"…Do you want some?"

Bei Nuan took a biscuit.

It was only polite to reciprocate.

Bei Nuan had been throwing eggs for a while and was craving them. Pretending to rummage through her bag, she found a pack of dried egg strips and gave a small bag to the girl.

"You're willing to share such good stuff with me?" The girl was immediately touched.

I have plenty more of this good stuff, Bei Nuan thought.

The two quickly established a revolutionary friendship by exchanging snacks.

The girl seemed out of place with this group of desperados. Bei Nuan casually chatted with her and soon became familiar, gradually learning about her background.

The girl's name was Zhen Zhen, and she was still a student. Because of the sudden outbreak of the zombie virus, she planned to leave school and go home. She met Huo Ren and the others on the road.

"Don't be afraid, Huo Ren is actually a good person."

She whispered to Bei Nuan, her tone very sincere, not at all like she was lying.

Bei Nuan looked at her calmly, her jaw dropping in surprise. She even forgot to throw the egg she was holding.

Casually killing people and taking pleasure in it, this kind of person was "actually a good person"?

This girl, were her morals blinded by his looks?

"I'm just still a little shaken after watching him kill my boss."

Bei Nuan hung her hand out the car window, quietly dropping an egg, and by the way reminding her of the fact that the "good person" in her mouth had just casually killed someone.

Zhen Zhen frowned. "Your boss was indeed a little pitiful."

He was shot in the head, was that just "a little" pitiful?

Bei Nuan casually made up a story. "My boss had a hard life. He had a seventy-year-old, paralyzed mother and a daughter waiting for money for surgery. That's why he risked his life to sail on the river at a time like this. It's really pitiful!"

After hearing this, Zhen Zhen's eyes slowly reddened. She thought for a moment and said, "Yes, your boss was also pitiful, and Huo Ren is also pitiful. In this whole thing, there are no winners."

Speechless was not enough to describe Bei Nuan's mood at this moment.

Bei Nuan looked at her and couldn't speak.

What did she mean "no winners"? What did she mean "also pitiful"?

Sympathizing with the murderer and the victim together, sympathizing with him for what? His finger hurting when he pulled the trigger?

Zhen Zhen continued to speak in a low voice to Bei Nuan. "I think Huo Ren, he must have had a rough time. Maybe he had some trauma in his childhood, otherwise he wouldn't be so impulsive."

"He told you that?" Bei Nuan asked, chewing on a dried egg strip.

"No, I guessed," Zhen Zhen continued. "I think he just doesn't have a sense of security, doesn't trust anyone. If there was someone who was wholeheartedly good to him, he wouldn't be like this."

Bei Nuan stared at her blankly for several seconds with the dried egg strip in her mouth, suddenly realizing a possibility.

Could this girl in front of her also be on a Holy Mother mission?

Her level was too high.

It was a height that Bei Nuan couldn't reach, a true industry veteran.

After struggling for a long time, Bei Nuan decided to test her.

Bei Nuan tentatively asked, "Voice of the Holy Mother?"

Zhen Zhen was puzzled: "Huh?"

Bei Nuan kept staring at her to see her reaction. Based on Bei Nuan's rich experience in lying, she really didn't understand.

Her holiness was innocent and natural.

"Nothing." Bei Nuan leaned back against the seat and quietly threw another egg.

The car drove for less than half an hour before they saw a lonely high-walled compound on the outskirts of the city.

The walls were very high, and the heavy black iron gate was wide and large, with two ferocious stone lions on either side. It was quite imposing.

It looked a lot like a prison.

As the car approached, a sign hung on the gate: "Ninth Prison".

It really was a prison.

However, outside the black iron gate of the prison, it was written in eye-catching fluorescent pen: Welcome survivors, please knock three short, three long, three short, and someone will open the door.

Bei Nuan thought: This is clearly taking advantage of the fact that zombies can't read.

The car stopped outside the large iron gate. The yellow-haired man jumped out of the car and knocked on the door rapidly three times, then slowly three times, and then rapidly three times again. The door actually opened.

Someone opened a small window and looked outside, let Bei Nuan's car in, and quickly closed the door.

There were cars and people in the courtyard, quite a few people, men, women, old and young, dressed in all kinds of clothes. It seemed that this prison had become a temporary shelter.

To Bei Nuan's surprise, no one took them away to check for injuries.

They seemed to be very familiar with the yellow-haired man and the others, as if they hadn't seen each other for a while, patting each other on the back and punching each other playfully.

They chatted warmly for a few words and then took Bei Nuan and Zhen Zhen directly to a building further inside the courtyard.

It was a dormitory-like building with iron gates everywhere.

Each person was assigned a room, which looked exactly like a prison cell.

There were several bunk beds inside the room, but no one else was there. Only Bei Nuan lived there, and Zhen Zhen was next door.

Since the door of the room was wide open, Bei Nuan asked the yellow-haired man who had been following her, "Can I go for a walk in the courtyard?"

The yellow-haired man reluctantly stood up and grunted, "Yes."

Then he followed behind Bei Nuan like a tail.

Bei Nuan took this tail and wandered around the courtyard, chatting randomly, and figured things out.

This really was a temporary shelter. Everyone called it the Ninth Prison Shelter.

A high wall surrounded the courtyard, with only two gates, one in the front and one in the back.

The high prison walls were enough to block zombies. Passersby who saw the fluorescent writing outside took shelter inside.

It was said that there were signs in nearby cities and on main roads, guiding survivors to this safe haven.

People who came in lived in the cells inside. There was another four-story building near the gate of the courtyard, which was for the people who managed this place.

The managers all carried guns and had fierce attitudes, looking more like guards.

As Bei Nuan wandered around, she studied the high walls of the courtyard, feeling very regretful.

The prison lived up to its name; there was no way out.

Bei Nuan thought that in the future, if she had the opportunity, she must get a retractable ladder and put it in her space. Then she wouldn't be afraid of any high walls.

While she was wandering around, the heavy iron gate opened again, and a broken car with no windows drove in.

People in the courtyard were looking over there.

Bei Nuan also glanced over and instantly became elated.

Lu Xingchi and the others had arrived.

He was indeed quite smart, following the rice and scrambled eggs to find the right place.

Lu Xingchi's jacket was open, missing a button, and the collar of his shirt inside was also messy, completely unlike his usual refined and tidy style.

The first thing Lu Xingchi did after getting out of the car was to scan the area. He saw Bei Nuan at a glance.

His eyes swept past the yellow-haired man following Bei Nuan and, without revealing anything, he didn't come over. His gaze only lingered on Bei Nuan for a moment before sliding away.

Jiang Fei pretended even better than Lu Xingchi, not even looking at Bei Nuan at all.

Du Ruo did look at Bei Nuan, then turned his head and smiled in another direction, as a greeting.

The three of them were also taken away, probably to go through the procedures and be assigned rooms.

Bei Nuan tried to figure out how to get rid of the tail behind her. With the yellow-haired man constantly following, she didn't even have a chance to have a proper word with Lu Xingchi.

While she was thinking, a gunshot rang out.

Bei Nuan flinched in fright.

Not far away, a middle-aged man was shot in the head and fell in the middle of the courtyard.

His wife and daughter, suddenly struck by this inexplicable tragedy, rushed to his side and wailed loudly.

The other people in the courtyard, completely unaware of what had happened, scattered and fled.

Bei Nuan raised her head and found the source of the bullet.

On the fourth-floor balcony of the small building where the guards lived, Huo Ren was leaning against the railing, looking down.

He had a smile on his face and was twirling a gun between his fingers. This time, he was so arrogant that he didn't even use a silencer.

Judging by his expression, he seemed quite pleased with the chaos he had created.

Seeing everyone in the courtyard running away, only Bei Nuan looked up at him. He curled the corner of his lips.

He raised his free hand, formed it into the shape of a gun, pointed it at Bei Nuan from afar, and mimed shooting – "Bang."
