Chapter 20: Chapter 20

Bei Nuan got down and patted the off-road vehicle, putting it into her space.

Then, she ran towards the dock.

While running, she shouted, "Wait! Wait for me!"

This time, the small boat saw Bei Nuan and actually turned around on the river, circling back.

The person steering the boat was a man in his thirties, wearing a jacket. There was a scar from his face to his neck, making him look fierce.

However, Bei Nuan wasn't afraid of him at all.

Because he looked exactly like the boat owner described in the book.

The book briefly mentioned his background in a few sentences. He was a wanted criminal, carrying a knife. However, he didn't commit any murders, just wanted to risk his life to earn some money during the chaos.

"Little girl, you want to cross the river? I have to charge you, ten thousand per person."

The boat owner sized up Bei Nuan. "If you don't have money, other valuables like gold, jewelry, watches will do."

"I know," Bei Nuan quickly said, "We have money."

Lu Xingchi had enough money in his box, but Bei Nuan wasn't stupid. She knew better than to take it out now.

"Wait a moment, some of us went over there, the money is with them, they'll be here soon."

The boat owner wasn't in a hurry. He docked the boat, got off, and waited with her.

Bei Nuan made small talk with him, "With everything in such chaos, what are you still making money for?"

The shore was full of zombies, and the boat owner spent all day alone on the river. He didn't mind chatting with the little girl.

"They say they've already set up a blockade to the west. Everything west of the blockade is fine. When I make enough money, I'm going to buy a house west of the blockade."

At a time like this, he was still thinking about buying a house.

As Bei Nuan was thinking this, the boat owner suddenly looked up and asked, "Are those your friends?"

Bei Nuan also turned her head and saw three off-road vehicles parked by the dock. A group of about seven or eight people got out.

"Not my friends, I don't know them."

As soon as Bei Nuan finished speaking, the group arrived at the dock.

Someone asked the boat owner from afar, "Boss, taking people across the river?"

The leader was a tall man in a leather jacket with an open collar. He wore sunglasses, revealing a sharp jawline and beautifully curved lips, but they were pursed in disdain.

"Crossing the river, ten thousand per person," the boat owner said.

"Oh, the boss is still daring to ask for a price." Someone laughed.

The man in the leather jacket had already approached and asked, "Ten thousand per person?"

This group didn't look easy to deal with. The boat owner opened his mouth, about to speak, but it was too late.

The man took his hand out of his jacket pocket, holding a gun.

He raised his hand, pressed it against the boat owner's forehead, and without saying a word, casually pulled the trigger.

With the gunshot, the boat owner collapsed softly.

The man nudged him with the tip of his foot and chuckled, "Boss, that's too expensive, how about a discount?"

He then pinched his throat, imitating the boat owner's voice, "Okay, a discount, I'll take you across the river for free."

The people behind him burst into laughter.

Bei Nuan was so shocked that she couldn't speak, her legs felt like they were paralyzed, unable to move.

The man turned to Bei Nuan and tilted his head at her.

"Get on the boat."

Bei Nuan didn't understand at all.

The man became a little impatient, "He's dead, you drive the boat."

Huh?

Bei Nuan was stunned for a moment, then understood.

There were only Bei Nuan and the boat owner at the dock, no one else. The off-road vehicles were also kept by Bei Nuan. Both of them were wearing jackets, standing together chatting. They looked like they were together, parking the boat by the dock, waiting for customers.

He shot the boat owner and left Bei Nuan to drive the boat.

But who the hell knows how to drive a boat??

However, there was no other way.

They killed without hesitation, she could only take it one step at a time.

The group carried their bags and boarded the boat one after another. Bei Nuan followed them hesitantly.

Just one day later than in the book, she encountered so many strange and bizarre things that weren't in the book.

Bei Nuan secretly glanced at the shore. It was silent in the wilderness, Lu Xingchi and the others hadn't returned yet.

"Go." Someone pushed Bei Nuan towards the stern.

The boat wasn't big, and there was a huge, dark motor attached to the stern.

Bei Nuan walked over in despair.

Completely, clueless.

She had to learn, even if she didn't know how.

Bei Nuan didn't dare to delay.

With the way the man in the leather jacket shot without hesitation, if he noticed something was wrong, he would instantly shoot her too.

Bei Nuan braced herself and examined the motor.

There was a red button on the motor. Bei Nuan poked it a few times, but there was no response.

Bei Nuan searched around the motor and was overjoyed to find a switch that said "on/off."

She quickly flipped it to "on," but it still wouldn't turn on.

She wanted to die.

Bei Nuan suddenly remembered that in movies, they would always pull on a rope-like thing, and the motor would start.

There was actually a handle on top of the motor's big head. Bei Nuan tentatively pulled it a little, and it really was connected to a rope.

Bei Nuan grabbed the handle and pulled it hard.

The motor roared to life!

Amazing!

Oh yeah!

Before she could finish celebrating, the boat crashed straight into the riverbank.

There was nothing else on the motor except for a thin, stick-like handle. Bei Nuan grabbed the handle in a panic and turned it, and the boat actually steered.

The people on board were completely unaware of Bei Nuan's first-time boating experience. They were still leisurely enjoying the river view, oblivious to the fact that they had almost all fallen into the water.

The leader heard the sound of the motor and called to someone beside him, "Xiao Hei, go watch her."

A dark-skinned, strong young man responded and walked behind Bei Nuan.

Bei Nuan knew that he had just killed the boat owner, and he was calling someone to watch her. He was probably afraid that she would do something reckless and throw them all into the river.

The small boat wobbled away from the dock.

And so, Bei Nuan, who had failed her driving test five times, was driving a boat for the first time in her life.

Carrying a boatload of people who were completely unaware of the dire situation, she headed straight for the turbulent heart of the river.

Bei Nuan glanced back at the shore and thought to herself: Momma Rabbit, your little bunny is about to fall into the river, where have you gone?

The river churned, tossing the small boat about. Bei Nuan struggled to control the boat, trying to follow the current to the other side.

Xiao Hei, who was behind her, couldn't bear to watch any longer and reached out to take the steering handle from her.

This Xiao Hei didn't look too bad.

He took the initiative to steer the boat, and Bei Nuan was happy to let him do it, lest she join them in feeding the fish at the bottom of the river.

Bei Nuan secretly tried to get closer to him: "You know how to drive a boat?"

Her voice was sweet and soft, and she was beautiful. Xiao Hei glanced at her and actually replied, "Yes, my family used to be fishermen."

After a while, he took the initiative to ask Bei Nuan, "You don't seem to know how to drive a boat?"

What do you mean "don't seem to know"? I have absolutely no idea.

"Uh… the boss always drove the boat, I haven't driven it much." Bei Nuan lied.

"That was your boss just now? No wonder you didn't cry when he died." Xiao Hei was a little puzzled again. "Then you don't even know how to drive a boat, what did your boss hire you for?"

Bei Nuan choked, this was a good question.

"He hired me to cook for him. He could even burn scrambled eggs." Bei Nuan replied, giving herself a thumbs up in her mind.

The two of them chatted in low voices when Bei Nuan suddenly saw Lu Xingchi on the shore.

No wonder it took them so long, so they found a boat.

It was a wooden boat, looking quite old. She didn't know where they found it, but they were rowing it towards the dock.

They probably couldn't find her.

Bei Nuan quickly stood up and raised her hand high, pretending to stretch.

The river was wide, and from such a distance, it was hard to see people clearly. She didn't know if they saw her.

Lu Xingchi's boat wasn't as fast as theirs, and Bei Nuan was a little worried.

Even if they reached the other side of the river, if Lu Xingchi didn't arrive in time, with the way the man in the leather jacket killed so casually, he might just shoot her as soon as they disembarked.

As Bei Nuan was worrying, something that looked like a beetle flew towards them.

It reached above Bei Nuan's head, as if it had used up its last bit of strength, and fluttered downwards.

Xiao Hei tilted his head, "What kind of bug is that?"

Bei Nuan had already seen it clearly. She casually scooped it up in her hand, making a gesture of throwing it into the river. "A beetle, I guess."

"Can beetles fly this far?" Xiao Hei was still puzzled.

Bei Nuan didn't answer and quietly clenched the thing in her hand.

With just a glance, Bei Nuan had already recognized it.

It was a metal button from Lu Xingchi's jacket.

Black, matte, with an exquisite emblem engraved on it.

Bei Nuan's line of sight was at the height of the buttons on his chest, and she had become very familiar with them over the past few days.

It was raining today, a little chilly, and he had been wearing his jacket since morning.

The button wasn't his arrow. Bei Nuan couldn't understand how he could make a button fly so far, and with its last bit of strength, land precisely in front of her.

But she understood what he meant.

He saw her.

Although the situation in front of her was extremely dangerous, Bei Nuan held his button in her hand, and her heart suddenly calmed down.

Lu Xingchi must have seen the three off-road vehicles abandoned on the shore, the boat owner who was shot dead at the dock, and Bei Nuan on the boat.

With his intelligence, he could definitely guess what was going on.

Under Xiao Hei's control, the small boat crossed the river and docked steadily at the opposite dock.

Bei Nuan looked back, but the river was too wide, and the water mist was hazy, she couldn't see Lu Xingchi and the others at all.

Everyone got off the boat, but Bei Nuan stayed on board.

According to her persona, she was supposed to be the boat owner's partner, so she shouldn't go ashore, she should stay on the boat.

As the group disembarked one by one, Bei Nuan quietly shifted her position, discreetly reaching out to touch the life jacket hanging outside the awning.

The life jacket quietly disappeared into her space.

Bei Nuan was ready to jump into the river as soon as she saw any sign of the man in the leather jacket wanting to harm her.

The current was so strong, and Bei Nuan wasn't a very good swimmer. She didn't know if she could still take out the life jacket from her space and put it on while in the water.

But it was too late to worry about that now.

The man in the leather jacket still had his hand in his pocket. He took a step ashore and suddenly took off his sunglasses, revealing a pair of long, slanted eyes. He glanced at Bei Nuan.

He said with a half-smile, "You, come here."

Why should I go over there? What for??

Bei Nuan looked at him warily. He wouldn't be thinking of taking her ashore and shooting her, would he?

Bei Nuan was torn.

Should she jump into the river now?

Which option had a better chance of survival? Going ashore or jumping into the river?

Before Bei Nuan could figure it out, the group all laughed. A young man with yellow hair jumped off the boat and grabbed Bei Nuan's arm, pulling her ashore.

As he pulled her, the yellow-haired man said, "She's quite pretty. Brother Huo likes this pure type."

Someone chuckled, "Brother Huo is amazing, one woman is not enough, he needs two."

Bei Nuan had long noticed that there was a delicate-looking girl among this group of desperadoes.

She was about twenty years old, with long, straight hair and simple clothes, which was very different from the bandit-like aura of the others.

At this moment, she pulled the leather-jacketed man's sleeve and suddenly spoke, her voice timid.

"Huo Ren, it's too dangerous here, there are zombies everywhere. Don't leave her alone, let's take her with us, okay?"

Huh?

Bei Nuan almost fainted.

It's dangerous to follow this big devil who carries a gun in his pocket and kills without hesitation, right? Are you brain-dead?

The man named Huo Ren seemed to take the girl's words seriously. He raised an eyebrow and gestured to the yellow-haired man who was holding Bei Nuan's arm, "Take her with us."
