Chapter 19: Chapter 19

Lu Xingchi slowly put the crossbow in his hand on the ground.

A gangster immediately walked over and took the crossbow away.

Zhou Cang nudged Lu Xingchi with his mouth and called to his men, "Tie him up too."

Lu Xingchi didn't look easy to mess with, and his brothers grumbled, "Zhou Cang, why don't we just shoot him?"

Zhou Cang snorted, his face twisting a little.

"Shooting him would be letting him off easy. I'm going to find a few zombies and watch them eat him alive, bite by bite. Let him experience what it feels like to be eaten by zombies."

Lu Xingchi's expression remained unchanged, but his heart understood.

Zhou Cang was also reborn.

He still remembered being thrown into the zombie horde last time and wanted revenge.

Someone came over with a rope to tie up Lu Xingchi. Lu Xingchi didn't move, letting him tie his hands. He thought to himself: When I was reborn, I got an ability. Now that Zhou Cang is reborn, would he also have some kind of ability?

The situation was unclear, and Lu Xingchi decided not to act rashly for the time being.

Bei Nuan was as quiet as a quail.

Hearing them call the man with the gun "Zhou Cang", Bei Nuan remembered who he was.

In the book, this Zhou Cang not only robbed people but also had designs on Bei Nuan.

Bei Nuan hid behind Lu Xingchi as much as possible, lowering her head and trying to reduce her presence.

Hearing Zhou Cang say that he was going to feed Lu Xingchi to the zombies, Bei Nuan couldn't help but complain in her heart: What kind of cannon fodder talk was this?

He wouldn't kill Lu Xingchi directly, but had to tie him up first and find a zombie to eat him.

As cannon fodder, you must have the awareness of cannon fodder. When you catch the male lead, you must chop him up, axe him, and shoot him immediately. Only then can you control the plot.

Zhou Cang had just killed two people and successfully captured Lu Xingchi. He was still very excited and didn't pay much attention to the weak and small Bei Nuan.

There was no separate room to lock people up, so Zhou Cang had someone escort them to a corner and keep an eye on them.

He himself was busy with other things.

Since entering the supermarket, as a young and strong man, he could only sit on the bare floor when he was tired.

The floor was cold and hard, not comfortable at all.

Zhou Cang had just made up his mind that the first thing he would do after getting the gun was to find himself the most comfortable place, where he could sit if he wanted to sit and lie down if he wanted to lie down.

There were no beds or sofas here, so Zhou Cang thought for a moment and asked someone to collect everyone's quilts and stack them up layer by layer for him, making it look like a thick mattress.

He then ordered all the cushions sold in the supermarket to be brought over and placed on top.

In the middle of the empty supermarket, a makeshift throne was thus built.

"What's good to eat? Bring it all up!"

He had a gun in his hand, and suddenly he was barking orders. His brothers were all a little scared and brought over a pile of potato chips.

Zhou Cang sat on the pile of quilts and frowned.

"I've been eating dry bread all day. Is there anything with soup? Something hot?"

Zhou Cang had been hiding far away in order to avoid Lu Xingchi. He didn't know anything about Lu Xingchi and the others discussing opening the warehouse and going to the third floor to find gas.

His little brother thought for a moment. "I'll go see if there are any self-heating hot pots."

After a while, he came back holding two buckets of instant noodles. "The self-heating hot pot shelf is empty. It's probably sold out. But there are instant noodles. It's a pity there's no hot water."

"Then what are you waiting for?" Zhou Cang slapped the pile of quilts with his gun. "Look for it!"

Finally, they actually found it.

There was a thermos cup at the service counter, which didn't seem to belong to anyone, and there was still more than half a cup of hot water left in it.

The little brother hurriedly made noodles for Zhou Cang.

The water wasn't boiling, and it took a long time for the noodles to soften.

The uncrowned king of the supermarket sat on his throne of quilts, enjoying his spicy beef noodles, the only ones in the entire supermarket.

And it wasn't dry, it had soup!

He looked around with satisfaction: the aroma of instant noodles wafted for miles, and the whole supermarket could smell it. Look, wasn't that little girl in the crowd drooling?

Then he turned his eyes to Lu Xingchi in the corner: no matter how handsome he looked, no matter how awesome he seemed, wasn't he still sitting on the ground without instant noodles to eat?

Lu Xingchi sat still, Du Ruo whispering to him.

"As soon as you left, those guys took advantage of Team Leader Xing's inattention and snatched the gun. They killed Team Leader Xing and Teacher Xue without a word. Then they tied the two of us up."

They didn't kill Dr. Su, which was smart. In the apocalypse, only a fool would kill a doctor.

"It looks like they're here for you, Lu Xingchi," Du Ruo asked, "Do you know them?"

Lu Xingchi shook his head.

Bei Nuan sat beside them, listening half-heartedly.

No one thought of tying up Bei Nuan, so she sat obediently beside Lu Xingchi, her mind wandering.

With Lu Xingchi around, there was no need to waste brain cells on Zhou Cang and the others.

The key was the Holy Mother's Kiss mission.

The mission was counting down, the numbers jumping in a heart-stopping manner.

Once it reached zero before completion, her Holy Mother points would be cleared, and the past two days would have been in vain.

Bei Nuan turned to study Jiang Fei.

Jiang Fei was leaning against the wall with his eyes closed. His face looked fine, and his injuries didn't seem to have worsened.

Bei Nuan looked at his bandaged head as if she were looking at a piece of pork. Would it be too abrupt to just pounce on him and kiss him?

As she was lost in thought, a figure suddenly blocked the light.

The Instant Noodle King had finished his noodles and was here for dessert.

"You, get up!" Zhou Cang kicked Lu Xingchi.

Lu Xingchi didn't resist at all and slowly stood up.

Standing up, he was a head taller than Zhou Cang, and Zhou Cang's momentum immediately disappeared.

This height difference made him even angrier. Zhou Cang raised his head and threw a punch.

Lu Xingchi dodged slightly, but Zhou Cang's fist still grazed his lips. Zhou Cang was wearing a ring, and Lu Xingchi's mouth immediately started bleeding.

Lu Xingchi frowned and opened his mouth to say something, but no sound came out.

Du Ruo abruptly stood up. "You…"

Du Ruo also seemed to have suddenly lost his voice, completely unable to speak.

Zhou Cang let out a burst of arrogant laughter.

"How about it? None of you can speak anymore, can you? Let me tell you, I'm not an ordinary person now. Whoever I want to shut up, they have to shut up for me!"

Bei Nuan looked at him in surprise.

This gangster actually had an ability?

No wonder Xiao San said that day, "You all have space and abilities now."

Bei Nuan remembered clearly that there was no setting of abilities in the original book. It was just a group of ordinary people struggling to survive in the apocalypse.

It seemed that Xiao San's test version was really messed up.

And this gangster's ability was very magical. Wasn't this the Mute Elder from Werewolf?

When he activated his skill, it would make the designated player unable to speak, which was quite tasteless.

Lu Xingchi looked down at Zhou Cang, the corners of his bloody lips suddenly lifted slightly, revealing a hint of a happy smile.

Zhou Cang, the Mute Elder, was baffled and didn't understand what he was smiling about.

Lu Xingchi's smile made him feel a little flustered. He shouted, "Just you wait, I'll catch a few zombies to eat you later," and turned away swaggeringly.

Bei Nuan quietly made a face at Zhou Cang's back: "Not allowed to talk? I'm so scared."

Lu Xingchi couldn't help but smile.

He sat down again, and Bei Nuan moved closer, carefully looking at the corner of his mouth. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." Lu Xingchi could speak again.

The mute effect ended before even a minute passed.

His hands were tied. Bei Nuan reached into her pocket, took out a tissue, and wanted to help him wipe the blood from the corner of his mouth.

Her hand stopped halfway.

It suddenly dawned on Bei Nuan: This, no, was, this, considered, an, injury?

So now there were suddenly two people she could kiss!

"What's wrong?" Lu Xingchi asked.

"Nothing, nothing." Bei Nuan gently pressed the tissue against the corner of his bleeding lips.

"You're blushing." Lu Xingchi's long eyelashes drooped, his gaze resting on Bei Nuan's cheeks.

The two were very close, only a dozen centimeters apart. This was a godsend opportunity, not to be missed.

Bei Nuan's heart was so tangled that it was about to twist.

If she leaned in and kissed his face at this time and said that line, it wouldn't feel so strange. It would be much more natural than suddenly kissing Jiang Fei.

It could be completely understood as a brain twitch in a critical situation.

Lu Xingchi might even think that she was up to her tricks again in order to continue following him. After all, they had just hugged upstairs.

Bei Nuan took a deep breath.

She had to be quick, a lightning strike.

Before he could react, she would touch him and withdraw. Then she would get double the Holy Mother points.

Bei Nuan's hand holding the tissue was still pressed against the corner of his mouth, and she quickly moved towards his cheek.

Just as she was about to touch his face, Lu Xingchi's head moved, and he asked in confusion, "What are you doing…"

Bei Nuan firmly kissed him on the lips.

Their lips pressed against each other.

Bei Nuan was completely dumbfounded.

There was only one thought in her mind—

The boss's lips were quite soft.

His nose touched Bei Nuan's nose, his eyes looking into Bei Nuan's eyes, his expression as surprised as Bei Nuan's.

Bei Nuan didn't know how many seconds she froze before she quickly backed away.

Lu Xingchi actually followed her forward.

The relative positions of the two didn't change at all, but the posture changed to Bei Nuan supporting herself with her hands behind her, as if she wanted to escape, while Lu Xingchi leaned in and pressed down.

At such a close distance, Bei Nuan saw him close his long eyelashes.

There was a more forceful touch on her lips as he gently pursed his lips against hers.

Bei Nuan quickly retreated again. Fortunately, he didn't chase after her, but just opened his eyes and looked at Bei Nuan quietly.

"Why did you two suddenly kiss?" Du Ruo completely forgot that his hands were tied and that there were people with knives and guns next to him. He almost went crazy with laughter. "This is the first time in my life that I've seen a real car accident."

Bei Nuan wanted to cry.

The point was, in this extremely awkward situation, there was still a shameful line she hadn't said.

She had already kissed him. If she didn't say that line, all her previous efforts would be wasted. A kiss for nothing.

Bei Nuan gritted her teeth and said with blood and tears:

"So, so sad… I… I'd rather be the one hurt."

This line was both pretentious and cheesy. After struggling to finish it, Bei Nuan's face burned like it was on fire, and she was so heartbroken that she just wanted to die on the spot.

Ignoring Lu Xingchi's reaction, Bei Nuan abruptly stood up.

"Hey! You! What are you doing standing up? Squat down!!"

The thug who had been leaning against the wall with a knife in his hand, lost in his own world, yelled at Bei Nuan.

"I want to go to the bathroom! Can't I go to the bathroom?!" Bei Nuan shouted even louder than him.

The thug didn't expect her to have such an attitude and was immediately taken aback by her momentum.

Bei Nuan ignored him and strode towards the women's bathroom at the supermarket entrance.

A thug wanted to follow, but Zhou Cang gestured to him and followed Bei Nuan himself.

The bathroom was quite large, with a row of mirrors and sinks along the wall and windows on the other side. Although there was no electricity, it wasn't dark at all.

As soon as Bei Nuan entered, she first looked at herself in the large mirror.

Her cheeks were flushed red, burning like ripe tomatoes.

Why on earth did she suddenly kiss his lips? It was all Lu Xingchi's fault. If he hadn't moved suddenly, how could she have kissed him there?

The point was, she had kissed him, and after kissing him, she had to say such a shameful line.

Bei Nuan didn't want to go out again in her life.

She should stay in the bathroom until the end of time, until the apocalypse was over and the world was united.

After staring at the mirror for a long time, Bei Nuan finally remembered to check the mission panel.

Holy Mother's Kiss mission (1/1). Xiao San was true to his word. Her Holy Mother progress bar had indeed doubled.

This was the only consolation in this tragic car accident.

As Bei Nuan was looking at the progress bar, the bathroom door was suddenly pushed open.

The Instant Noodle King swaggered in, gun in hand.

Zhou Cang closed the door behind him and gave Bei Nuan a wicked smile. "Are you scared being alone in here? Do you want me to keep you company?"

It seemed that he had eaten too many instant noodles and was feeling frisky.

There was no need to waste words on him. Bei Nuan silently turned around and scrambled onto the sink counter.

Zhou Cang watched the little girl struggle to climb up and stand tall on the sink counter, finding it a little funny.

There was a mirror behind the sink counter, and there was no way out after climbing up, but it added to the fun.

She stood on the counter, looking down at him, her hair softly draped over her chest, her eyes clear, her face delicate, as if a pair of pure white angel wings would spread out behind her at any moment.

The more beautiful something was, the more it aroused the desire to defile and destroy it.

Zhou Cang licked his lips, not in a hurry. He slowly walked to the sink counter and looked up.

"Why are you standing so high? Do you want me to carry you down?"

Bei Nuan blinked her eyes innocently and stretched out her fair little hands.

Two hundred bags of rice fell from the sky.

Thump, thump.

Boom, boom.

It was like a truck unloading, a barrage of heavy thumps.

Zhou Cang was gone, only a small mountain of rice bags remained in front of the sink counter.

As Bei Nuan was carefully taking a step, preparing to climb down on the rice, the door opened again.

Lu Xingchi stood at the door, holding a gleaming knife in his hand, his eyes cold, his body emanating a murderous aura.

He was stunned when he saw Bei Nuan on the sink counter and the mountain of rice bags. Then, as if the ice had melted, a hint of a smile appeared on his lips.

He walked over and naturally put his arm around Bei Nuan, lifting her off the sink counter with ease.

"Seems like you didn't need my help after all?" he said.

Bei Nuan put her hand on his shoulder and jumped to the ground. She let out an "mm-hmm" and walked around the pile of rice.

After Zhou Cang's interruption, she no longer felt as awkward facing Lu Xingchi as she did before.

Rice was precious. Bei Nuan picked up the bags one by one and put them back into her space.

As she picked up the last few bags, Zhou Cang finally emerged. He was still alive, twitching slightly.

Bei Nuan thought to herself: You're just a weak Mute Elder, yet you dare to act so arrogantly? If I don't stab you, who will I stab?

Bei Nuan tilted her head and studied him.

"Lu Xingchi, look how pitiful he is," Bei Nuan said, her face full of sincere sympathy.

Lu Xingchi: "…"

She made it sound like she wasn't the one who had dropped the rice on him.

Bei Nuan glanced at the progress bar. Her Holy Mother points slowly inched forward.

The gun in Zhou Cang's hand had just been knocked to the other side of the bathroom. Lu Xingchi walked over to pick it up.

Bei Nuan bent down to pick up the last few bags of rice and muttered under her breath.

"The weight was enough, but the height wasn't, and they fell one bag at a time, not as a whole. It didn't flatten him."

Lu Xingchi was far away and probably couldn't hear her, but Zhou Cang, lying on the ground, heard her clearly.

Didn't flatten him?

Zhou Cang couldn't help but shudder, looking at her in horror.

Her face was innocent, her voice sweet, and her tone was filled with genuine regret.

Zhou Cang suddenly felt that this angelic-looking girl was actually more terrifying than the man with the knife next to her.

"He's not dead yet? That's just as well." Lu Xingchi picked up the gun, lifted Zhou Cang up, and dragged him out of the bathroom.

Bei Nuan noticed that the outside had been cleared.

Zhou Cang's thugs were all lying on the ground, each finished off with a single blow. It was the signature style of Lu Xingchi described in the book, clean and efficient.

Dr. Su was comforting the frightened crowd with Du Ruo and the others.

Lu Xingchi dragged Zhou Cang out like a sack of potatoes.

Bei Nuan knew what he was going to do. As a kind-hearted Holy Mother, she didn't want to follow him.

She approached the crowd and, as if by magic, pulled out a handful of candies and chocolates of various flavors from her pocket, distributing them to the crying children.

Lu Xingchi dragged Zhou Cang out of the supermarket alone, up to the third floor, and continued up the fire escape.

The door to the roof was locked, but this kind of metal door lock was a piece of cake for Lu Xingchi. He twisted it open.

The air on the rooftop was fresh. It was already evening, and the sky was dyed with pink and lavender hues of the sunset, breathtakingly beautiful.

Under this beautiful scenery, Zhou Cang was trembling like a leaf.

Lu Xingchi dragged him to the edge of the roof and looked down at his face.

"Reborn?" Lu Xingchi asked casually.

Zhou Cang's eyes were filled with terror as Lu Xingchi exposed his rebirth.

Lu Xingchi said indifferently, "What's the use of being reborn? A reborn piece of trash is still trash."

Then Lu Xingchi realized that he had muted him again.

Lu Xingchi thought to himself, if Bei Nuan were here, she might say again: Not allowed to talk? I'm so scared.

He couldn't help but hook the corner of his lips and casually pushed Zhou Cang off the building.

He fell three floors. Whether he was dead or not, in any case, the zombies strolling around the entrance saw something falling and swarmed towards it.

When Lu Xingchi came down alone, everyone was cleaning up the second floor, and things had almost returned to normal.

Lu Xingchi found Bei Nuan and went to Dr. Su with her.

The first thing he did was hand him the gun.

Dr. Su smiled. "I'm a doctor. I don't know how to use a gun. It's more suitable for you to keep it."

Lu Xingchi pressed the gun into his hand. "You'll learn. You keep it. We're leaving tomorrow morning."

The gun represented leadership. Since Lu Xingchi was leaving, Dr. Su didn't refuse again.

"There's one more thing I need to ask of you." Lu Xingchi gently pushed Bei Nuan forward.

Bei Nuan knew that Lord Lu was entrusting Jiang Cheng with her.

"This is my girlfriend. I want to leave her here for the time being."

He said this was who?

Girlfriend??

Bei Nuan looked up at him in shock.

Lu Xingchi remained expressionless under her surprised gaze. "I have something to do now, and it's not convenient to take her with me. I want to leave her here and come back for her in a while."

Dr. Su nodded readily. "No problem, don't worry."

Bei Nuan didn't come back to her senses until it was almost dinnertime.

"Is he crazy? Wouldn't it be the same to say I'm his sister? Why did he say girlfriend?" Bei Nuan complained in a low voice to Du Ruo and the others while Lu Xingchi wasn't around.

Jiang Fei smiled but said nothing.

Du Ruo stroked his chin and replied with something completely unrelated: "Dr. Su isn't married, is he? He shouldn't be. Otherwise, someone as responsible as him wouldn't be staying here alone."

Dinner was delicious.

With Zhou Cang out of the picture, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. With the additional supplies from the warehouse and the cold storage, Dr. Su decided that they should have something good to eat tonight.

There was some meat in the refrigerator that couldn't be kept any longer and had to be eaten.

There were cooks among them. They took a few people to the third floor to cook, braising pork knuckle and making steamed chicken, which were cut up and distributed to everyone.

Now, the aroma truly wafted for miles.

Dr. Su pondered, "The power is out now. There's still so much meat in the cold storage. I don't know how long it can last."

Bei Nuan's mouth was full as she ate the pork knuckle. "We can make it into cured meat…" she mumbled.

Du Ruo was definitely her soulmate when it came to food. He helped her translate: "She's right, we can make it into cured meat. Besides cured meat, we can also make cured chicken, sausages, and other things. They're super delicious."

Dr. Su nodded. "Right, we have enough salt and seasonings in the supermarket. We can marinate all the meat and hang it on the roof to air-dry."

"That's right," the chef next to him said, "Actually, if we go back thirty or forty years, who had refrigerators? And even further back, for thousands of years, there wasn't even electricity. Didn't people still live well?"

Bei Nuan said, "We can also pickle the vegetables…"

Dr. Su understood this time: "Yes, we can also pickle all those fresh vegetables. If the rescue doesn't come in time, we can hold out for a long time."

Bei Nuan thought to herself, the author of this "Apocalypse Fury" was a standard zombie-victory supporter. Rescue definitely wouldn't come. They'd better rely on themselves.

"We have meat, but it's a pity we don't have much rice," someone said.

Bei Nuan subconsciously glanced at the rice in her space. When she looked up, she saw Lu Xingchi's handsome brows slightly furrowed, his eyes full of warning.

He was afraid that she would donate all the rice in her excitement.

Bei Nuan obediently kept quiet and took the last bite of her pork knuckle.

But she was calculating in her heart, if she donated it, how many Holy Mother points would she gain?

Bei Nuan finished the meat in her bowl and looked around.

Du Ruo was holding his bowl of rice. There was still a perfect piece of pork knuckle on the paper plate in front of him, with well-distributed fat and lean meat, and a layer of reddish-brown, springy skin, very tempting.

Bei Nuan reached out with her chopsticks and swiftly snatched it away.

Du Ruo: "…"

"Can't you be a little more generous?" Bei Nuan quickly said.

The Holy Mother's Voice "Generosity" mission finally jumped to (4/5).

"I'm not being ungenerous, am I?" Du Ruo wondered. "You can have it if you want it."

A disposable plate suddenly appeared in front of Bei Nuan, on which were two beautiful pieces of pork knuckle and a plump chicken leg.

"I haven't touched them." Lu Xingchi pushed the plate to Bei Nuan and said indifferently.

Why was the boss suddenly so nice?

Bei Nuan thought to herself: Could it be that the kiss today had increased the boss's favorability towards her?

It was no use even if it did increase. The boss was determined not to take her with him.

Bei Nuan sighed, picked up a piece of pork knuckle, and sneaked a glance at Lu Xingchi.

Lu Xingchi was expressionless, sitting upright, eating elegantly, as if this wasn't a supermarket but a three-Michelin-starred restaurant.

Bei Nuan carefully studied his impassive expression and felt that his favorability probably hadn't even increased.

He was just sympathizing with the poor little thing who was about to be ruthlessly abandoned by him tomorrow.

It got dark quickly. Candles and batteries were limited and couldn't be wasted, so everyone went to bed early like birds.

Bei Nuan was given a thin blanket. She wrapped herself in it and lay down on the ground fully clothed.

At first, there were still people whispering, but gradually, the surroundings fell silent. After a while, some people started snoring.

Bei Nuan had never slept with so many people before, let alone in a supermarket. If it weren't for the virus raging outside, it would actually be quite interesting.

Bei Nuan couldn't sleep. She closed her eyes and organized the things in her space when she suddenly felt someone lying down next to her.

She opened her eyes abruptly and vaguely saw another person beside her in the darkness. Just as Bei Nuan was about to cry out, the person covered her mouth tightly with his hand.

"It's me."

It was Lu Xingchi's voice.

These words didn't calm Bei Nuan down but made her hair stand on end.

It was the middle of the night, and it was dark everywhere. What was he doing lying down next to her?

Bei Nuan felt a little regretful.

She shouldn't have hugged and kissed him provocatively during the day.

He wasn't like Zhou Cang. She couldn't just drop rice bags on him and crush him to death. If she killed the male lead, who would watch her show off her Holy Mother skills? How could she increase her Holy Mother points?

Bei Nuan visibly tensed up.

Lu Xingchi found it a little amusing.

She had taken the initiative to hug him during the day and even kissed him—although it seemed like she had wanted to kiss his cheek and accidentally touched his lips. But after the kiss, she immediately said such an ambiguous line, her face full of shame and indignation.

It didn't look like she really liked him.

Could it be that she couldn't persuade him to change his mind and was trying to seduce him?

Lu Xingchi didn't know what he was thinking either. He lay in the darkness for a while tonight, and no matter what, he couldn't suppress the urge to come and find her.

Maybe it was because he was leaving tomorrow and wanted to tease her one last time.

Sure enough, she was really scared, like a cat whose fur had been rubbed the wrong way.

Lu Xingchi chuckled softly and let her go.

"Get me a few packs of compressed biscuits, a magazine of long nails, and a few bottles of water," he whispered in her ear.

It turned out that he was here to get supplies. Bei Nuan breathed a sigh of relief.

Bei Nuan took them out of her space and handed them to him.

Dr. Su had already returned his crossbow and bag to him during the day. Lu Xingchi took them and put the things into his bag.

Bei Nuan asked softly, "Anything else? I'll sort them out and put them in your SUV so you can take them directly tomorrow."

"Nothing else, you keep them for yourself."

So he only took a few packs of biscuits and a few bottles of water, leaving everything else in her space to her?

The medicine, food, outdoor survival supplies that Ning City had purchased, as well as his emergency cash and gold, were all left to her?

Bei Nuan was a little touched.

"I have many other opportunities to get supplies outside. You're staying here, and you only have these things in your space." Lu Xingchi advised, "Don't think it's a lot. It'll be difficult to get more in the future. Keep them for yourself, don't always give them away to others."

His tone was serious, but it was entirely for her own good.

Bei Nuan looked at him. He was propping himself up on his elbow, lying on his side facing her. It was pitch black, and she could only see the outline of his broad shoulders, not his face.

He continued in a low voice, "Tomorrow morning, I'll find a chance to take you to the underground parking lot so you can get your SUV out."

"Okay," Bei Nuan agreed, "At least leave yourself a thick sleeping bag? It's too cold at night these days. I'll put it in your car for you tomorrow."

Lu Xingchi hummed in agreement and gave his final instructions. "In short, be careful."

He got up and left.

Bei Nuan couldn't sleep even more now.

Early the next morning, Lu Xingchi took Bei Nuan to the underground parking lot as promised and retrieved the SUV.

During breakfast, Du Ruo and Jiang Fei suddenly changed their minds and decided to leave with Lu Xingchi.

Du Ruo said, "It's relatively safe for Bei Nuan to stay here for the time being. I have to go with you and supervise you to come back and pick her up after you find a safe place."

Jiang Fei reached an agreement with Lu Xingchi. He would go with Lu Xingchi, and Lu Xingchi would first go to Shuicheng to help him find someone.

Bei Nuan knew who he was going to look for. It was mentioned in the book that it was the son of his prison cellmate.

On the day the zombie outbreak happened, the entire prison was in chaos. A few of them managed to escape, and one very loyal cellmate stayed behind to cover for them and was bitten by zombies.

That cellmate had a son whom he talked about all the time, who was studying at a university in Shuicheng.

In his last moments before turning, he grabbed Jiang Fei's hand and struggled to say his son's name, so Jiang Fei decided to go to Shuicheng.

The three men were ready to set off after breakfast.

Before leaving, Du Ruo reached out to Bei Nuan. "We're all leaving, no hug?"

"Hug what?" Bei Nuan flatly refused.

Bei Nuan's eyes were fixed on Lu Xingchi's face, biting her lower lip, her expression like a small animal about to be abandoned.

Lu Xingchi remained calm and collected, completely unmoved.

Du Ruo looked at one and then the other. "You two are staring at each other without saying a word. Don't tell me you want to kiss again? No way, right?"

He directly dragged Lu Xingchi away.

They went to the underground parking lot to find the car. Bei Nuan didn't see them off again but stood in the distance, watching them go downstairs.

Dr. Su accompanied Lu Xingchi and the others to the parking lot.

"Are you sure you don't want to stay? Where are you going?" Dr. Su asked.

"We'll cross the river first and go to the university in Shuicheng to the west." Lu Xingchi pointed at Jiang Fei. "We're going to help him find someone."

"Shuicheng?" Dr. Su thought for a moment. "When the internet was still working, I heard rumors that they blew up all the bridges across the river to prevent the virus from spreading to the other side. You might not be able to get through."

Du Ruo interjected, "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. We can only take it one step at a time."

Dr. Su seemed to have a lot more to say to Lu Xingchi. As they went downstairs, he discussed the long-term development plan for the supermarket with Lu Xingchi.

They needed to consider reinforcing several doors, selecting people to form guard and resource-searching teams, and make preparations in advance for the event of water and gas outages.

They slowly walked to the underground parking lot. Lu Xingchi pretended to look around and chose the SUV with its doors wide open, as if it had been abandoned in a hurry.

Lu Xingchi went out to clear the zombies outside first before bidding farewell to Dr. Su and driving away.

The three men sat in the car, windows down, letting the cool morning breeze blow in. None of them spoke.

The SUV gradually left the city limits.

"Don't you feel uncomfortable being cooped up in there all the time?" Lu Xingchi suddenly spoke.

Du Ruo: "…"

Jiang Fei: "…"

Under the last row of seats, the thick sleeping bag that Bei Nuan had left for Lu Xingchi was thrown there. The sleeping bag wriggled like a worm and sat up.

Bei Nuan's small head, with her hair in disarray, poked out from inside.

"If you knew I was here, you should have said so earlier. I was almost suffocated to death."

Bei Nuan, wrapped in the sleeping bag, plopped down on the seat and took a deep breath of fresh air through the wide-open car window.

Lu Xingchi turned the steering wheel and parked the car on the side of the road.

No way? Bei Nuan was utterly disheartened. They had already driven so far, but he still refused to take her with him?

Lu Xingchi leaned over and opened the car door, but it was the passenger side.

"Come here," he said.

Bei Nuan obediently got out of the sleeping bag, got out of the car, and climbed into the passenger seat.

"Whose idea was it, you three?" Lu Xingchi began his interrogation.

Bei Nuan silently raised her hand.

Du Ruo was curious. "Lu Xingchi, how did you know? The sleeping bag is so thick, and she's so small. I thought she hid quite well."

"It's mainly because your acting skills are too poor." Lu Xingchi said bluntly, "Only Bei Nuan's was slightly better. Did Dr. Su collude with you too?"

Bei Nuan nodded guiltily.

It was easy to persuade Dr. Su to help. All she had to do was pretend that she couldn't bear to be separated from her boyfriend and insisted on going with them.

With Dr. Su stalling Lu Xingchi, she had enough time to go down to the parking lot through another fire escape, get into the car, hide in the sleeping bag, just in time.

"What was the first rule of following me?" Lu Xingchi asked Bei Nuan.

"If I want to follow you, I have to listen to your commands and never make my own decisions about anything."

Bei Nuan answered fluently and then argued, "But you wouldn't let me go with you, so at that time, that rule was temporarily invalid, right?"

Lu Xingchi: "…"

Bei Nuan said in a small voice, "I just wanted to follow you guys. It's not like I made any big mistakes, right? Can't you… be a little more generous?"

Holy Mother's Voice "Generosity" mission (5/5).

Looking at the countdown for double Holy Mother points, Bei Nuan discreetly did a little celebratory dance in her heart.

However, on the surface, she still looked at Lu Xingchi cautiously.

Lu Xingchi didn't say anything more and started the car.

He didn't turn around but continued driving along the road.

So did this mean he was allowing her to come along? He wasn't going to send her back?

"Jiangcheng is indeed not ideal," Lu Xingchi finally said, "Let's see if there's a better place ahead before I drop you off."

Bei Nuan breathed a sigh of relief. In any case, she had temporarily escaped disaster.

She sneaked a glance at him and found that he didn't seem angry. He even looked quite happy.

"Wait a minute," Bei Nuan said quickly, fumbling for her phone.

Lu Xingchi didn't understand what she was going to do. He stopped the car again and looked at her sideways.

"I did one more thing. I told Dr. Su that I would give them a mysterious gift. They should have discovered it by now."

Bei Nuan confessed honestly.

"I left all the rice behind, behind the shelves. It's a huge pile, enough for them to eat for several years. Anyway, I'm going with you, so I won't need it for the time being, right?"

Bei Nuan held up her phone.

On the phone screen was a photo of bags of rice piled up behind the shelves, with half of Bei Nuan's face peeking out in front of the camera.

Lu Xingchi was speechless. "You left it there, why did you take a photo?"

Bei Nuan replied leisurely, "I was afraid you wouldn't believe me."

Bei Nuan leaned back comfortably in her seat and brought up the Holy Mother progress bar.

Sure enough, her Holy Mother points didn't increase when she left the rice behind. They only increased when the male lead found out about it.

Bei Nuan wasn't sure if just telling him would work. Seeing was believing, so she deliberately took a photo to show him.

Moreover, Bei Nuan had already thought it through. She had to complete the Holy Mother's Voice "Generosity" mission first before showing him the photo.

With the double bonus reward for completing the "Generosity" mission, her green Holy Mother points surged by a large margin, increasing more than ever before.

As Bei Nuan happily hugged her Holy Mother points like a little miser, someone in the faraway Jiangcheng supermarket discovered the mountain of rice bags behind the shelves and called Dr. Su over.

Bags and bags of rice were piled up like a small mountain.

Everyone came to watch, and everyone was excited.

"How come there's so much rice? How much is there?"

"There must be hundreds of bags, right?"

"That's great. This is enough for us to eat for a long time!"

"Who brought so much rice here? It wasn't here yesterday."

Dr. Su smiled faintly.

He knew who it was.

Yesterday, Bei Nuan said that she had left a mysterious gift for them behind the shelves and asked him to take a look after she left. Dr. Su was busy with other things and hadn't had time to come over yet.

He didn't know how she conjured up so much rice.

The image of that small face appeared in Dr. Su's mind.

Her eyes were clear and pure, like a warm light that pierced through the darkness and soothed the heart in this chaotic and hopeless apocalypse.

"An angel, perhaps," said Dr. Su, who never believed in miracles.

He turned to find the tunnel engineer.

"Let's discuss digging the tunnel. I think there's a force helping us in the dark. We'll definitely survive."

Lu Xingchi drove all the way. By the time they reached the riverside, it was drizzling outside.

The light spring rain fell on the ground, stirring up the fresh, moist, and earthy scent of the soil, refreshing and invigorating.

It should have been a scent that symbolized hope, a harbinger of a year of bountiful harvest. Unfortunately, the farmland stretching out beyond the car window was destined to lie fallow this year, with no one to cultivate it.

The wide river was right in front of them, but the road was cut off.

As Dr. Su had said, the bridge across the river had completely collapsed, with most of it submerged in the rolling river water.

Lu Xingchi drove along the river, passing by three or four bridges in a row, all of which had been blown up.

Bei Nuan thought about this part of the plot and suggested, "Where there's a river, there's a boat. Let's see if there's a pier nearby."

In the original book, Lu Xingchi and the others found a ferry at a riverside pier.

Even in such chaotic times, there were still people busy making money, willing to charge exorbitant fees to ferry people across the river.

In the book, Lu Xingchi and the others reached the riverside immediately after leaving the Jiangcheng supermarket warehouse and encountered the boat. But now, because they had "browsed" the supermarket, encountered Zhou Cang's murder, and stayed for an extra night, they arrived at the riverside a whole day later than in the book.

A day late, she wasn't sure if they could still find that boat. Bei Nuan was unsure.

There was a pier not far away, but there wasn't a single boat in sight.

Lu Xingchi pulled over.

Du Ruo nudged him and muttered something in a low voice.

Lu Xingchi turned to Jiang Fei and asked, "Are you going?"

Jiang Fei looked much better and sat up by himself. "Yes, I drank too much water this morning."

There was no bathroom here, so they had to go to the weeds by the pier to relieve themselves.

Bei Nuan didn't want to go. Lu Xingchi handed her the car keys. "Keep the car doors locked. Don't open them for anyone."

It was like a mother rabbit instructing her bunny before leaving home.

Bei Nuan nodded obediently. "I know, 'Don't open the door for anyone until Mommy's home.'"

Lu Xingchi smiled and got out of the car with his crossbow.

The rain had stopped. They walked quite a distance into the weeds, their figures gradually disappearing into the tall, wet grass, probably to avoid being seen by Bei Nuan.

Bei Nuan looked around boredly when she suddenly noticed a small dot approaching in the distance on the river.

As it gradually drew closer, she realized it was actually a boat.

The boat wasn't very big. It had a square tin awning with a flag on top and a motor at the stern.

It was exactly the same as the ferry described in the book.

But the boat was just passing by the pier and showed no sign of stopping.

Bei Nuan quickly rolled down the car window and shouted towards the weeds, "Lu Xingchi, there's a boat! The boat is here!!"

There was no movement from their side.

Bei Nuan leaned out of the window again and waved desperately at the boat passing by the pier. "Hey! Wait a minute! Wait for us!"

They were too far away, and the people on the boat probably didn't hear her. The boat turned a corner and was about to leave.

Bei Nuan was desperate. She opened the car door and jumped out of the car.
