Chapter 17: Chapter 17

A serious middle-aged man was holding a gun.

"All of you, put down your weapons," he ordered.

Bei Nuan placed the crowbar on the ground and saw from the corner of her eye that Lu Xingchi had also put down his crossbow.

The man with the gun nodded to the person beside him, and two people came over to collect all the weapons and their backpacks.

They rummaged through the bags, a little puzzled.

"Is this all you have?"

Lu Xingchi's bag contained several boxes of nails, while Bei Nuan's bag only had half a bag of spicy duck gizzards that she hadn't finished eating in the car. Du Ruo and the others came empty-handed, without even backpacks.

Bei Nuan, who was accustomed to packing everything and leaving nothing outside, blinked her eyes innocently.

Lu Xingchi replied calmly, "That's all. We ran out of food, so we wanted to come in and look for some."

The four people who had eaten Hainanese chicken rice at noon didn't look like they were out of food.

Although the middle-aged man didn't quite believe it, he continued to ask, "Where did you come in from?"

Lu Xingchi replied, "The back door for deliveries."

The men looked at each other, obviously not believing it.

One of them muttered, "How is that possible? Isn't there a large group of zombies over there?"

The middle-aged man with the gun gestured to one of them, who immediately ran towards the back door.

He came back in no time, his voice changing with excitement.

"All those zombies are dead! Every one of them has a hole in its head!"

Everyone cheered up. "There are no more zombies! Then we can go into the warehouse and get food?"

Only the middle-aged man calmly glanced at Lu Xingchi, then at the crossbow that had just been confiscated, and tilted his head.

"You guys come with me."

It turned out that there were no zombies in the supermarket, but nearly a hundred people, men, women, old and young, were all gathered on the second floor.

One side of the second floor was a transparent glass curtain wall, which was still bright even though the power was out. Everyone was sitting on the ground in an open space beside the shelves, in twos and threes, resting.

The group was taken to a man.

The man looked to be in his fifties, wearing glasses, dressed plainly, with a gentle face.

The middle-aged man with the gun called him "Teacher Xue" and told him what had happened.

"Teacher Xue" also became excited. "The warehouse can be accessed now? He killed all the zombies? That's amazing!"

The middle-aged man with the gun also said, "We are in dire need of people like him."

However, they were very cautious. The first thing they did was to have someone thoroughly examine them for any suspicious wounds.

Jiang Fei had an obvious head injury.

Teacher Xue called over a young doctor named Su to take a look.

Doctor Su looked young but was very reliable. After a quick examination, he asked with a smile, "He hit his head? Were you in a car accident?"

He then re-bandaged Jiang Fei's head professionally.

It was much better than Du Ruo's bandaging, which made Doctor Du very unhappy.

Bei Nuan quickly figured out that there were three leaders in this supermarket.

In addition to Teacher Xue and Doctor Su, there was also the middle-aged man with the gun.

Everyone called him "Captain Xing." He was a policeman. There were a few zombies in the supermarket at the beginning, and he was the one who dealt with them.

However, there was a large group of employees who had been infected before the store opened, gathered in the warehouse. He couldn't deal with them alone, and he didn't have enough bullets. He knew there was a warehouse full of supplies, but he couldn't get to them.

Now that the warehouse was suddenly clear, everyone was overjoyed.

Teacher Xue sent a few people to take stock of the supplies.

The people who came back reported that there were plenty of other things, but unfortunately, not much rice.

Rice was easy to store and very precious in the apocalypse. Teacher Xue couldn't help but sigh.

Bei Nuan thought to herself - the rice was all neatly stacked in her space.

If she donated it…

As Bei Nuan was thinking, she suddenly met Lu Xingchi's gaze.

He seemed to know exactly what she was thinking and shook his head at her subtly.

The three leaders discussed it and decided to have someone register all the items in the warehouse and distribute them to everyone on a daily basis.

The rule here was that all supplies were distributed per capita, with priority given to the elderly, the weak, the sick, and the disabled.

Although they had just arrived, Bei Nuan and the others were immediately counted as members.

Jiang Fei, as an injured person, was given a quilt so he didn't have to lie directly on the ground.

Bei Nuan noticed that only the elderly and children had comfortable cushions and bedding to rest on. The three leaders, like everyone else, did not receive any special treatment.

Everyone was also given a small piece of bread and a bottle of water. They were told that they could go back for more after they finished drinking. The water supply hadn't been cut off yet.

Bei Nuan thought to herself that after two days of eating and drinking her fill, she was finally experiencing the real life of the apocalypse for the first time.

Holding the small piece of bread, Bei Nuan wasn't hungry at all.

Next to Bei Nuan was a father with a two or three-year-old boy, his eyes fixed on the bread.

Bei Nuan simply stuffed the bread into his hand.

Her Holy Mother points increased a little, making her feel guilty.

Bei Nuan pretended to reach into her pocket and took out a lollipop from her space and handed it to the little boy - she was being sneaky because the rule here was equal distribution, and privately hoarding food was strictly prohibited.

The little boy's father thanked Bei Nuan and suddenly said, "Actually, there's a large wholesale food market not far from here. There's enough food in there to last us all a long time. If only we could get it."

Doctor Su, who had bandaged Jiang Fei's head, happened to walk by at that moment. He saw the lollipop in the little boy's mouth but pretended not to.

Doctor Su chimed in, "There are zombies everywhere outside now. We can't get through, can we?"

"We can't go overground, but we can go underground," the boy's father said ambitiously. "It's not far. We can take the tunnel. We don't have to go to the surface at all."

Doctor Su laughed. "What tunnel?"

"To be honest with you, I'm a tunnel engineer. We built the Jiangcheng subway."

The boy's father explained patiently.

"There's a new subway line under construction nearby. There's a station right under this supermarket. It's been sealed up because the project was halted. There's no one inside. As long as we find the right place to get through, we can take the existing tunnel underground and go to many places safely."

"Really? Where is it?" Doctor Su became interested and sat down.

Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi couldn't help but look up at them at the same time.

Bei Nuan clearly remembered that the book said that the first human base in Jiangcheng was developed underground. If she remembered correctly, the head of the base was surnamed Su.

Could it be that this supermarket was the prototype of the base?

Lu Xingchi also looked thoughtfully at the boy's father and Doctor Su for a few seconds, then suddenly stood up and went to look for Teacher Xue.

Bei Nuan vaguely heard him ask Teacher Xue how much food they had left.

A small piece of bread per person was simply too little.

Teacher Xue explained that originally there was only what was on the shelves, which wouldn't last long with so many people. But now that the warehouse was open, the food shortage would be greatly alleviated.

Lu Xingchi thought for a moment and asked, "Where's the supermarket's cold storage?"

There should be a lot of meat and fresh produce in the cold storage.

Captain Xing chimed in, "It's in the back, but it's locked with a sealed iron door. We've tried to open it many times, but we can't."

"Take me to see it," Lu Xingchi said.

They came back after a while.

Captain Xing, a calm and steady middle-aged man, now had slightly red eyes with excitement.

He reported to Teacher Xue, "We have food. He went over and opened the cold storage door in one go. There's a lot of meat inside, as well as all kinds of frozen food. It's enough for everyone to eat for a long time."

Teacher Xue said, "It's a pity we don't have electricity or fire. We can only eat it raw."

Bei Nuan raised her hand.

Everyone turned to her.

Bei Nuan said seriously, "I saw the signs hanging outside the building. Besides the supermarket, there are other stores in this building. There's a fried chicken place, a dumpling place, and a rice noodle place…"

Bei Nuan counted them one by one on her fingers.

Lu Xingchi was speechless.

That wasn't the point. Bei Nuan concluded, "So those stores should have gas."

Foodies had the same focus. Du Ruo added, "You didn't mention all of them. There's also a sushi place and a skewer place. I saw the signs too. They're on the third floor."

Lu Xingchi nodded slightly. "If the gas hasn't been cut off, we can start a fire and cook."

Teacher Xue looked a little worried. "We want to go up there too, but the problem is there are zombies on the third floor."

Zombies were not a problem for Lu Xingchi at all. He said, "Give me my crossbow. I'll go up and clear them out."

Captain Xing already admired this young man from the bottom of his heart and quickly asked, "I'll go up with you. How many helpers do you need?"

"No need," Lu Xingchi glanced around and landed his gaze on Bei Nuan. "I only need her help."

Bei Nuan: ?

Bei Nuan didn't understand the big boss's thought process, but she still stood up and obediently followed behind him.

As Bei Nuan and Lu Xingchi walked out together, they didn't know that in a far, dark corner, a pair of eyes were staring at them with hatred.

Zhou Cang, the thug who had robbed them on their way out of the supermarket in his previous life, the one whom Lu Xingchi had thrown into the zombie horde without hesitation, had also been reborn with supernatural powers.

Having been reborn once, Zhou Cang didn't dare to take advantage of the chaos and rob them again. He followed the crowd into this supermarket.

There weren't many supplies in the supermarket. From morning till now, they had only been given two small pieces of bread.

Zhou Cang wasn't interested in bread. He had been staring at the gun in Captain Xing's hand.

At a time like this, having a gun meant having everything.

Who would have thought that he would run into Lu Xingchi and the others again? This person was not to be trifled with. To be safe, Zhou Cang and his brothers huddled far behind the shelves.

He stared at Lu Xingchi, his mind filled with the horror of being surrounded and gnawed on by a group of zombies in his previous life.

He secretly resolved to make Lu Xingchi taste that feeling too.

Lu Xingchi and Bei Nuan opened the rolling shutter door separating the second-floor supermarket and went up the stairs to the third floor.

Little Three, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly spoke.

"Bei Nuan, because you and the male lead have reached the required amount of time spent alone together, a new hidden mission has been triggered. Do you want to take it?"

Bei Nuan asked, "What's the mission?"

"You have to decide whether to accept it or not before I can tell you. But I can tell you in advance that it's a 12-hour time-limited gambling mission."

"Gambling? What do you mean?" Bei Nuan didn't understand.

"It means that if you complete the mission within the time limit, I'll double your current Holy Mother points. If you don't complete the mission, all your current Holy Mother points will be cleared. Will you accept it or not?"

The stakes were high.

Bei Nuan inquired, "Is it difficult?"

Little Three thought for a moment. "I don't think it's difficult at all. You could say it's quite easy."

Bei Nuan looked at the green Holy Mother progress bar.

A minute in the casino was like ten years of hard work. Bei Nuan rolled up her sleeves. "Okay, I'll take it!"

A new mission slowly appeared on the mission interface.

"Holy - Mother - Kiss??"

Looking at the strange name, Bei Nuan suddenly had a bad feeling.

Below was a line of small print: Within twelve hours, kiss an injured person and say the line: I'm so sad, I'd rather it was me who got hurt.

What kind of cheesy line from an old-fashioned melodrama was this?

Bei Nuan was going crazy. "Little Three, are you trying to kill me?"
