Chapter 15: Chapter 15

Lu Xingchi was surprised at himself. A nameless anger was surging inside him, and he had no idea why.

He had saved Jiang Fei once in his past life too.

Back then, after they came out of the small restaurant, Bei Nuan had begged desperately. Du Ruo couldn't bear to see it and decided to let Jiang Fei stay.

And then what?

Lu Xingchi couldn't remember clearly because he didn't pay attention at that time.

He only knew that Bei Nuan had been taking care of Jiang Fei silently, feeding him, giving him medicine, being meticulous, and not needing anyone else to worry about him.

After Jiang Fei could move, the two of them were practically inseparable.

Their ambiguity was obvious to everyone.

Lu Xingchi didn't care about that at the time. What he cared about was that Jiang Fei was very useful.

Jiang Fei seemed to have been in prison. Although he looked thin, he was strong and agile. He could share a lot of responsibility with Lu Xingchi.

And because he was saved by Lu Xingchi, he had always been very reliable.

He was definitely not like this now.

The image of Jiang Fei sipping the porridge from Bei Nuan's spoon and then looking up at her with a smile flashed through Lu Xingchi's mind.

He could hardly resist the urge to pull over and throw Jiang Fei out of the car.

Bei Nuan was even more disturbing.

Lu Xingchi lay in his tent last night, his mind full of her standing in the moonlight in his clothes.

She was so small, looking up at him with her clear eyes.

Lu Xingchi knew clearly that every word she said was true.

After a whole night of struggling and making up his mind, Lu Xingchi decided that he couldn't take her with him any longer.

She was a completely different person from before.

But sometimes, she did the exact same things as the old Bei Nuan.

For example, at the restaurant, she didn't hesitate to act on her own, secretly opening the shutter door and letting the people outside in.

No one could say for sure whether, if he continued to take her with him, she would end up pushing everyone into the fate of annihilation again.

The safest thing to do was to find a safe place and leave her behind.

In a blink of an eye, they arrived at Jiang City.

Jiang City was a prosperous city. Bei Nuan remembered that in the book, Lu Xingchi and his group stopped by Jiang City and went to a supermarket to collect supplies.

Just like in the book, Lu Xingchi came to Jiang City.

As soon as they approached Jiang City, Bei Nuan saw that this place had not been spared either. It was a desolate and chaotic scene, as if locusts had just passed through.

The zombie virus didn't need to collect supplies or sleep, so it spread much faster than they could travel. They were now behind the virus and well and truly in the infected zone.

Their phones had long since lost signal, and they had no idea what was going on outside. All they could do was take it one step at a time.

Lu Xingchi didn't hesitate to turn into Jiang City.

"Can't we just go around? Why are we going in?" Du Ruo didn't understand and asked Lu Xingchi. "We have so many supplies. Isn't that enough?"

Bei Nuan thought to herself, "I know the answer to this question. He wants to find a place to dump me."

As expected, Lu Xingchi drove around the outskirts of the city, searching house after house, until he finally chose a small two-story building.

The building had a high courtyard wall and was located away from the main road, secluded and inconspicuous, but it looked very sturdy.

The doors were all wide open, and there were signs of fighting. The owner was most likely dead, but there were no zombies inside.

"Let's rest here for lunch," Lu Xingchi said.

"Rest again? Didn't we just set off?" Du Ruo didn't understand.

"Aren't you thinking about making Hainanese chicken rice for Bei Nuan?" Lu Xingchi said faintly. "There's a kitchen here, and a gas tank. It's perfect."

They found a bed on the second floor and put Jiang Fei down.

Du Ruo asked Bei Nuan to take out all the chickens she had stored in her space, picked the fattest and freshest one, and went to the kitchen to cook.

Bei Nuan followed him in to have a look.

Lu Xingchi didn't come over. He was busy going in and out, doing who knows what.

When the golden chicken was out of the pot, the two of them came out of the kitchen and were shocked.

The outside had changed completely.

All the doors and windows were reinforced with steel bars, crisscrossing each other. The courtyard wall was also reinforced and heightened with thick steel plates that came from who knows where.

It looked like a prison, or a bunker, as strong as it could be.

If the zombies hadn't learned how to use explosives, they wouldn't be able to get in.

Bei Nuan was dumbfounded. "Did Lu Xingchi do all this? In the time it took to cook a meal?"

Seeing that Bei Nuan and Du Ruo had come out, Lu Xingchi explained, "There's a construction site not far from here. I found a lot of building materials."

There was a large gas-powered welding machine at his feet.

He turned to Bei Nuan.

"I've checked. There's a well in the yard, and the house has its own flush toilet. There's no problem with basic living. It's hard for zombies to get in. What you need to be wary of in the future is not zombies, but people."

He casually shook the bars on the window and tested their strength.

"Don't open the door to anyone. Don't trust anyone. No matter if it's a man or a woman, injured, dying, or being chased by zombies, no matter how pitiful they pretend to be, don't believe them. If you let anyone in, you'll be the one in trouble."

"What do you mean?" Du Ruo interrupted him, suddenly understanding. "You're going to leave her here alone again?"

Lu Xingchi ignored him and continued to Bei Nuan, "You don't have enough food and supplies yet. We'll go out later to collect more for you, enough for several years."

"What about after a few years?" Bei Nuan suddenly wondered what his plan was. "Let me die?"

Bei Nuan thought to herself, "He probably thinks that I won't be able to live for a few years on my own, so a few years' worth of supplies will be enough."

Before Lu Xingchi could answer her question, someone on the second floor said, "I'll stay with her."

It was Jiang Fei.

He came out of the bedroom, leaning against the wall. After only a few steps, his handsome face turned completely pale.

But his tone was calm and firm.

"You guys go. I'll stay here with her."

Lu Xingchi looked up.

Jiang Fei stood upstairs, looking at him from afar. Neither of them said a word.

Du Ruo suddenly interjected, "Then I'll stay here too."

Lu Xingchi: "…"

Du Ruo said sincerely, "Lu Xingchi, one of them is as weak as a chicken, and the other is still injured. I can't leave them here alone. Otherwise, why don't you go ahead by yourself?"

The atmosphere froze.

Silence.

In just a short minute, the great Boss Lu had been abandoned by everyone and become a loner.

Lu Xingchi suddenly realized that Jiang Fei had changed his clothes.

He had taken off his dirty prison uniform and put on a clean white shirt.

The shirt was exquisitely made and dazzlingly white. It looked very familiar.

"Is he wearing…" Lu Xingchi asked Bei Nuan.

"Your shirt," Bei Nuan said in a small voice, feeling a little guilty. "His clothes were too dirty to wear anymore, so I took one of yours. You weren't here just now, so I didn't have time to tell you."

Jiang Fei was thinner than Lu Xingchi and his shoulders weren't as broad. He couldn't quite fill out Lu Xingchi's white shirt, which looked a little loose on him, but it gave off a very different feeling from when Lu Xingchi wore it.

Lu Xingchi looked at Bei Nuan speechlessly.

Knowing that it wasn't the right time, Bei Nuan couldn't suppress her desire to complete the mission.

"You still have dozens of them…" Bei Nuan sneaked a glance at Lu Xingchi. "Can't you be… a little more… generous?"

The Holy Mother's voice mission "generous" successfully jumped to (3/5).
